It’s been a long time since we’ve had an ace tennis game. Giants of the genre have been absent for over a decade and due to this, fans have had to contest with fault after fault. 2K finally brings the lauded franchise, TopSpin, out of retirement but will this be an epic return or a mishit?

The TopSpin games have always delivered a true-to-life representation of the sport. While games like AO Tennis have tried to replicate this, they have never captured the same balance of simulation and arcade gameplay. This return to the court looks to develop on what came before to serve up an ace. With stars on the court in both the male and female divisions, this has the potential to be the ultimate tennis game. Banishers: Ghost of New Eden is an action RPG that has an intriguing narrative from beginning to end and is chock full of captivating side stories along the way. There’s decisions, much like the one above, that you have to make and which will impact your gameplay. And of course, you’ll be able to kick a ton of ghost butt. Combat is definitely a fun time. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, developed by Team Ninja just dropped and it’s a good one. This action RPG takes elements from Nioh and Bloodborne, like kickass martial arts combat and swordplay.  Obviously if you’re a fan of either of those you’ll feel right at home here. It’s action-packed and features a solid narrative and great exploration. It’s dramatic without being over-the-top and we all know there’s a sweet spot here when it comes to telling a good story. Plus, it all takes place during the Wan Dynasty.

This game has been occupying the thoughts of gamers for the past week. There is something about it that just scratches us in just the right spot. If you have been sitting on this game, check out the very beginning of Stray to see what you are missing.

What cat-lovers love about this game, other than cats, is the way it captures the movements and behaviors of a real cat. From graceful leaps to scratching objects to incessant meowing, Stray is THE cat game.

The game starts with our cat travelling with its cat-pack through an overgrown part of a city. While jumping from place to place, the cat slips and gets separated from its friends. In a tragic “Long live the king” moment, it falls into an abandoned sewer. The cat soon finds itself in the Dead City, where it finds mysterious clues leading it someone in need of help.

After encountering a strange group of parasites, the stray is chased through the streets of the city until it finds itself climbing through buildings and across rooftops. There are some puzzles that may be too complicated for the average cat, but cats have a habit of getting places where they shouldn’t.

The year is 1994 and a new RPG comes out in Japan. This game is Live A Live. It will not be another 28 years until this game is remade and finally made available in outside of this country. Now, Nintendo Switch owners can play this classic.

Live A Live has an interesting premise. There are seven different chapters to play, each with a different protagonist in a different era of time. Each chapter is isolated, with it’s own unique story. Players can start any of them or switch between them at any point.

After completing them all, each protagonist is drawn to the same point in time for an ultimate showdown with the boss, who is actually one of the playable characters. As with many JPRGs, you may have to do some level-grinding during you playthrough of the chapters. There may be some places where being under-leveled might prevent you from progressing. Thankfully, you can restart chapters and they are relatively short.

Gameplay includes turn-based combat in a tiled environment. Outside of combat, players can move around in larger areas. There are random encounters, but some enemies can be avoided, though there are many scripted battles to be fought.

The different settings and stories offer a ton of visual variety. Even though JRPGs do not often benefit from English voice overs, the voice acting is also commendable.

BlueTwelve Studio, a French game developer, makes quite the debut with Stray. This third-person cat adventure game takes place in a cyberpunk-eqsue city that’s full of neon alleys and a slew of interesting characters. This new game has been one highly anticipated since its announcement and it seems to live up to expectations! Of course, who wouldn’t want to roam these colorful streets as a cat?

Players get to see the city through the eyes of a cat complete with B-12, a small drone. Can this duo use their strengths, stealth and nimbleness to survive the streets? Check out our video review below to find the answers to all of your questions. And it’s all spoiler free.

If you grew up on horror films, like Friday the 13th, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Scream, then you will love The Quarry. The game takes obvious inspiration from those movies. If you also loved Until Dawn, this game is also a must-play.

Supermassive Games, creators of Until Dawn and the Dark Pictures games are back with their homage to 80s and 90s slasher films. Like those films, The Quarry demonstrates mastery of horror tropes, like red herrings, jumpscares, and misdirection.

The game’s setting is your standard slasher film outfit. A bunch of teens are out camping in a remote forest. They spend the summer getting to know each other, party, and end up isolating themselves to be picked off one at a time.

The mechanics of Supermassive Games’ previous titles should be familiar enough for returning players. There are decisions that players will be faced with that impact the game in immediately, but also in the long run. Players will also have QTEs to content with, which can have punishing and unforgiving consequences.

Where The Quarry really shines is through its cinematography. The camera placements, movements, and transitions perfectly capture the movie-watching experience that so many horror fans grew up on. With so many decisions to make and outcomes to see, there are definitely going to be reasons to play this over and over again.

However, did you know that you can do more damage if you fight to the beat of the music? Not many experiences highlight that indisputable fact, but Metal Hellsinger does.

We recently played Metal Hellsinger and frankly, it slays. It plays kind of like Doom. You run around in Hell and blast demons with guns. There is also a sort of metronome around your reticle, which is synced with the music, which we established helps you fight better.

If you shoot, attack, or dash along with the music, your score and score multiplier increases. Like other rhythm games, timing your actions perfectly gives you more points. When enough damage is done to an enemy, you can unleash a powerful finisher at close range.

During the demo we see two weapons in action. There is a shotgun and dual pistols. Hopefully, the full game will give players a wider variety of weapons to use. Being a game set in Hell, where you shoot demons, the music is going to lean into the heavy metal influence and imagery, which I very much enjoy.

During this demo, we can listen to two tracks. One of them appears to be reserved for a specific boss battle. The full game will have a much more expansive tracklist, which includes music from artists from bands like Arch Enemy and Lamb of God. More recently, Serj Tankian has included music for Metal Hellsinger.

The title Evil Dead carries weight. A staple in its genre and a favorite of many, so adapting this to another medium is a daunting task. Previous attempts have been a horrorshow but have Saber Interactive found the perfect formula to raise the dead?

Asymmetrical multiplayers have grown in popularity. Games like Friday the 13th: The Game, Dead By Daylight and Predator: Hunting Grounds have proven to be successful, garnering a cult following. With so many franchises being represented, it makes sense for Ash and his motley crew to join the ranks. With a broomstick in hand, can he blow away the competition? Dark Souls has become one of those video games that everyone wants to emulate or at least get a piece of money-wise. Dolmen is an example of that, but it does that thing where things are just different enough that people won’t call it a blatant rip-off.

Instead of a dark fantasy setting, Dolmen is set in space. It takes place on an alien world crawling enemies with tentacles and sort-of Lovecraftian features. Your character is sent to this planet to check out a mining operation gone wrong. The resource being mined is called Dolmen and it’s purpose may or may not have something to do with all the monsters you encounter.

Perhaps the biggest departure from the Soulsborne formula is that Dolmen’s story is very present. Instead of going out of your way for lore, the player is directly involved with the plot.

As for the features you will find familiar, you have your standard light attack, heavy attack, stamina management, and dodging/parrying. You also have limited healing items, but the twist is that your healing items also double as ammo for long ranged weapons.

Unfortunately for Dolmen and all the other games looking to take that Souls crown, there’s a game called Elden Ring. They will have to compete with FromSoftware’s most refined title and one of the strongest contenders for 2022’s game of the year.

If you’ve been waiting for Saints Row to find solid ground again, you’re gonna get your wish. We here at COGconnected were lucky enough to sit down and watch a nice chunk of dev-narrated gameplay and it’s clear that this reboot knows what it’s about.

Back in 2006, Saints Row captured the interest of gamers with its GTA-inspired gameplay. While it was a great open world, it still leaned heavily on its influences. Aware of this, the developers veered into a self-aware and ridiculous area. Placing humor at the forefront, the game found its own identity within a crowded genre. Now after a seven-year hiatus, the gang is back and the crazy has been dialed up to 11. Check out our video preview to see the highly anticipated game in action!
