When released in 2013, many players dismissed Grinding Gear Games’ Path of Exile as a late-to-the-party Diablo 2 clone. Like Blizzard’s hit ARPG, Path of Exile was an isometric hack-and-slash with a grimdark fantasy setting. It took some time and a bit of understanding, but eventually, the game developed a large and devoted community of fans. Those fans have created a thriving player-based economy of trading. Fans pride themselves on their appreciation of Path of Exile’s deep and somewhat arcane mechanics.

Set Apart

I was fortunate to spend several hours in Hollywood this week alongside members of the gaming press and dozens of Path of Exile content creators and community members. The occasion: the opportunity to take a deep hands-on dive into Path of Exile 2, the long-awaited sequel. You know you’re deep in fan territory when the developer announces that a new character has a range of shield powers and the crowd loses its mind. We had the chance to hear Grinding Gear’s Jonathan Rogers gush about the new game, impressive mechanics, and new characters. Of course, the big thrill was playing hours of the game.

Path of Exile has set itself apart through a steady stream of content and new Leagues. Leagues are PoE’s term for something akin to DLC. They’re focused less on new maps, and more on gear and special abilities. Temporary Leagues last for many months. After they conclude, some of the new content is folded into the Standard game. This has been going on for over a decade, and the amount of free-to-play content is massive.

Equally impressive — actually, downright intimidating — is the game’s constellation of passive abilities. There are thousands. Many new players have taken a look at the skill tree and bailed right then and there. The passives come from leveling up. Gems are found in the game or traded with other players. In the original PoE, the gems slot into weapons and other gear to add special powers and effects. The character development meta of PoE is a major draw for long-time players.

Going Through Some Things

Development of Path of Exile 2 began in 2019 as a major addition to the base game. The developers realized that they had so many new ideas and mechanical changes that it deserved to be a full-fledged sequel. Now, Path of Exile 2 is heading towards closed beta. To the disappointment of fans, the beta has been delayed, but Rogers hopes to have it ready to roll later this year.

The development process has been slowed a bit as changes lead to other changes. For example, adding WASD movement control and a dodge roll to one character class was such a hit, that the devs decided to retool every class to include it. This led to bosses and monsters having to be rebalanced to take into account the player’s ability to roll out of harm’s way. Judging by the hours I played, Path of Exile 2 can be a downright difficult game. 

There’s no doubt that the biggest change coming to the sequel is that gems will no longer be slotted to equipment. Instead, characters will have the ability to use gems to unlock and upgrade powerful new combat abilities and brilliant new spells. It makes sense, it streamlines the way gems are used and it allows for some mix-and-match powers that are every bit as exciting as the old system. Though it’s still mostly under development and under wraps, the passive skill tree looks to be as deep as fans have come to expect.

Of Druids and Warriors

Prior announcements and videos have highlighted the new, shape-shifting Druid class. For our event, we had the chance to play three classes: the sorceress, ranger, and warrior. The slow-moving warrior had a stable of powerful shield abilities. The agile archer — definitely the crowd favorite — combined fast rolls and leaps with elementally-infused arrows. The sorceress was a literal blast, too, using crowd-controlling walls of fire and lightning. I spent over an hour with each character type and I can’t wait to get to play them again.

While the game is understandably rough at the edges in terms of bugs, it looks absolutely fantastic. Much better, in fact, than another popular ARPG that rhymes with “realto.” The lighting and detail in the environments are already impressive and the spells and weapon effects look state-of-the-art. The visuals combine with equally glorious, gut-punchy audio. 

The developers promise a substantial, multi-chapter campaign and, of course, additional leagues and endgame down the line, some based on those from PoE. There is no question that Path of Exile 2 has the potential to far exceed the first game in graphics, mechanical polish, and longevity. 

Promises Fulfilled

The crowd at the event — hardcore players and deeply invested content creators — excitedly greeted the new game. But, I suspect, they were equally prepared to hold Jonathan Rogers to account if the sequel hinted at future disappointment. Judging by their enthusiastically positive reactions and my own incredibly fun experience, Path of Exile 2 is on track to be something special.

It was premiered as a part of the Future Games Show Spring Showcase. It showcases the new gameplay scenes featuring the original voice actor of the main character, Chris Barrie. As well as the music from the soundtrack composed by Mason Fisher.

Simon the Sorcerer Origins is the prequel to the iconic point-and-click adventure from 1993. The events take place in the Magic World filled with powerful wizards and absurd characters. An ancient prophecy summons Simon away from his turbulent teenage life. This new world that is full of puzzles, alchemical contraptions, powerful spells to learn, and tasty stews to munch on.

The game is an all-Italian project that won the favor of Simon and Mike Woodroffe, the original creators of the game. A team of 80 professionals crafted the game with love and dedication to offer a worthy adventure with 15,000 hand-drawn frames.

Of course, the participation of pop legend Rick Astley with his hit Together Forever also makes the game one of the most anticipated releases of the year. The game will be available this year on all the major platforms. This includes PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, and PC (Linux, Windows, Mac). It will also be localized in several languages, allowing more players to experience this epic adventure.

Often, veteran developers come up with some pretty awesome ideas. Especially when those developers happen to be ex-EA and Ubisoft developers. It tends to mean there is some experience there. Today, those developers under KEK Entertainment are happy to announce their debut game, Armor Attack. Inviting players to a tactical vehicle-shooter, the game allows the choice between different classes of vehicles split between three warring factions. Interestingly, the developers are bringing the game to iOS, Google Play, PC and Mac this year with console releases planned for the future. Of course, an announcement trailer provides players with a look at this metal on metal combat. 

Armor Attack introduces players to a future Earth, ravaged by endless wars. Here, three different factions battle for what’s left of the planet. Importantly, the time of boots-on-the-ground soldiers seems to have passed. Now, wars are fought in massive war-machines split between different classes that aim to handle various roles on the battlefield. Yet, within these vehicle classes, players can further customize their mech. For instance, players can add different engines to scout the map faster, or deployable energy shields to protect your allies, or even a massive fire bomb to destroy the enemy. Furthermore, the maps where battles rage have changing environments, making players adapt to holding different strategic points and battling different AI controlled NPC enemies.

There are two types of gamers for whom Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader will be a delight. The first group includes fans of turn-based, tactical CRPGs, especially those heavily focused on combat. The second group is made up of Warhammer 40K fans — and they are legion — with a deep love of the game universe and its lore. If you land anywhere in that Venn diagram, then Rogue Trader might be your new obsession. Gamers newly converted to CRPGs thanks to Baldur’s Gate 3 will find Rogue Trader a similar but more exacting experience.

Diving Deep

Based on a tabletop game from 1987, Rogue Trader’s tutorial prologue accomplishes the task of teaching the basics of movement and combat and sets up the tone of the narrative. It doesn’t exactly ease the player into Warhammer’s deep ocean of lore. There are a lot of opaque, arcane terms and character references, so be prepared to do some reading. Basically, you’re a bit of a mercenary outside the system, with a strong desire to turn a profit. The Imperium of Man gives you a massive ship and its blessing. Your tasks include exploring the edges of the realm, discovering new planets, establishing trade and alliances, and defeating pockets of resistance.

Owlcat is the developer responsible for the Pathfinder games, so players should expect the same level of narrative detail and complexity. In Rogue Trader, nearly every action or story decision ripples out and forward. This isn’t surprising, but the cast is immense and you captain a ship with hundreds of citizens. Choices matter. On top of that, eventually, your mini-empire includes an array of planets to manage, called a voidship in the game’s parlance. It’s a little like managing a large stable of fast-food restaurants, where you’re always playing politics with the managers. Oh, and keeping the employees on task and the customers safe.

Battles Big and Small

Managing the economy of ships and planets is only one third of Rogue Trader’s challenge. The other two are small-scale, turn-based battles and ship-to-ship combat.

When it comes to the small encounters, Rogue Trader follows familiar rules. This means you’re commanding a small party in turn-based, tactical fights. Positioning and cover mechanics play a pivotal role. Each character has an array of special abilities on cooldown timers, but they can only use one per turn. The classic fantasy roles of tank, ranged specialists, mages, and healers make up the bulk of your shifting parties. The combat moves quickly, but there is a lot of it and some of the fights drag on past the point of fun.

Ship-to-ship space combat feels like an interesting element that doesn’t quite fit. For one thing, the naval battles really drag, slowing the pace of an otherwise exciting game. Your hulking ship is not exactly nimble, and some of the enemies spit out endless-feeling waves of small craft to dispatch. It’s too bad that the naval encounters couldn’t have been real-time battles, a la Homeworld.

The 40K Vibe is Strong in Rogue Trader

Although just as operatic in scope and drama as its fantasy version, classic Warhammer 40,000 is more focused on political and institutional rivalries, clashing religions, and economic warfare. This comes through in Rogue Trader’s excellent writing and the visual design of the ship and other environments. Everything is rich in detail. While some character animations in combat lack a bit of smoothness, character designs, spell effects, and other combat elements are very well done and visually engaging. Visually, my biggest gripes were with the camera, which was occasionally unwieldy and hard to position, and some of the darker areas. There are times when it’s hard to find characters on screen when scenery gets in the way.

Although Rogue Trader’s voice acting isn’t quite on par with that of Baldur’s Gate 3, it’s generally good and there’s a lot of it. The score by Paweł Perepelica is excellent, full of the big musical gestures, and oversized orchestral and choral cues you’d expect from a Warhammer soundtrack. The environmental audio and combat lack a bit of punch, however.

Though nothing was so bad as to crash the game, there were a few bugs, AI characters immobilized in the environment, and a handful of other rough edges. But like the Pathfinder games, Rogue Trader is immense and I’m sure patches will be forthcoming.

Do You Like to Read?

CRPG fans heavily invested in Warhammer 40K will thoroughly enjoy Rogue Trader, but there’s enough backstory and written lore to bring newcomers up to speed and into the fold. Rogue Trader is generous to a fault with combat and sometimes the momentum stalls in the naval combat or over-lengthy tactical battles. Overall, Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader is an engaging turn-based RPG and another reminder of how rich the Warhammer universe can be.

It is obvious that the new setting will come with a different set of challenges, activities, mechanics, and more. One of the finest examples is fueling jet skies. GIANTS Software, the self-publishing developer and its partner Case IH, unveils fresh content for Farming Simulator 22 in celebration of a prestigious anniversary. It is called the Case IH Farmall Anniversary Pack and comes along with two iconic Farmall series tractors. Moreover, this new content is available on all the platforms.
