Every week, the cosplay crew at COGconnected dive deep into the world wide web to uncover the very best in cosplay. This week, our cosplay journey takes us to Sandusky, OH for ColossalCon 2024. So, I’ve never actually heard of Sandusky before, but apparently they have some pretty talented cosplayers! I’ll have to add it to my travel bucket list. When it comes to adaptations for movies and television, video games have the batting average of a player at the bottom of the minor leagues. In other words, awful. For every Witcher, dozens of Mortal Kombats are queued up for failure. With Prime Video’s Fallout series about to enter the spotlight, millions of fans are hoping the new show beats the odds. After previewing the first season, I have good news. It hits a home run.

Failure is not an Option

It’s not hard to understand why game adaptations so often fail. The problems come down to fan service and narrative. Give the diehard fans what they want, and you lock out casual viewers who might not be that intimate with the game. Ignore the details of the source material and you alienate the base. Then again, some fans will never be satisfied because you know, the internet.

The other major hurdle is narrative, or more precisely, the way games — especially role-playing games — handle story and player agency. In an RPG, the player actively shapes the story, evolves a character and at least has the illusion of changing the world. Done well, the experience is immersive and compelling. In contrast, television and film are entirely passive. Viewers can literally sleep through the show.

Prime Video’s adaptation of Bethesda’s Fallout tackles both problems head-on. Long-time fans will see absolutely faithful representations of the game’s world, meet some familiar characters, and rarely feel disconnected from the lore. At the same time, Fallout tells an original story through the eyes of a new character, Lucy McClain. Lucy serves quite obviously as the player character, growing in skill and strength as the story unfolds. While Fallout can’t entirely solve the problem of player agency, Lucy’s evolution from naive vault dweller to battle-tested fighter has the same trajectory as an exciting RPG adventure.

Back to the Future

Over the course of four numbered games and a couple of spin-offs, the Fallout franchise has brilliantly crafted a retro-future, post-apocalyptic world. It’s a vision of an America where gee-whiz, good golly post-war optimism — with a sinister, red-scare darkness roiling underneath — has to survive a nuclear holocaust. The world of Fallout is savage, violent, and darkly humorous in equal measure. The games drip with pointed social satire and irony. In the end, of course, the games are about killing monsters and bad guys. 

Maybe because Bethesda’s Fallout guru Todd Howard worked closely on the series, Prime Video’s adaptation is an entirely faithful recreation of the game. This comes through in an unexpected way, either by design or budgetary limits. The Fallout games are notorious for being janky and technically rough-around-the-edges, if not actually broken. This rough-hewn quality comes through in the series via its cinematography and use of practical effects and makeup. The camera work and overall look of the show bring to mind classic sci-fi before the age of overwhelming digital effects. Just like the game, there is a surprising amount of graphic violence and gore in Fallout, but its use of special makeup and non-digital effects lessen a bit of the shock value that comes with digital realism.

That’s not to imply that Fallout can’t be visually stunning or artistic. It often is, but focuses more on sometimes subtle, sometimes hilarious imagery — and the occasional digital effects — and less on self-consciously being art-house beautiful.

Banding Together At the End of the World

Without dipping into spoiler-land, the first season of Fallout sets up the familiar — to gamers, at least — premise. The show’s prologue in 2077 shows the devastation of a long-anticipated nuclear attack and introduces us to Cooper (Walton Goggins), a star of benign TV westerns with a curious longing to bring a bit more violence to the medium. Fast forward two centuries to Vault 33, one of a series of deeply buried survivalist bunkers. The Vaults preserve more than people. They steadfastly hold to a sanitized version of pre-apocalypse America. When Lucy McClain (Ella Purnell) comes of marrying age, Vault 33 seeks a suitable mate from adjoining Vault 32 in exchange for food.  Bad things happen, and at the end of the first episode, Lucy finds herself on the irradiated surface in search of her kidnapped father (Kyle MacLachlan). As in all RPGs, the campaign begins with a quest.

Both the narrative structure and use of tropes and mechanics from the RPG give the series strong videogame vibes. We meet Maximus (Aaron Moten) a member of the quasi-mystical Brotherhood of Steel and the Ghoul, a semi-immortal survivor who needs a constant flow of meds to stay alive. It’s one of Fallout’s sharp visual ideas that the Ghoul’s tattered spaghetti-western duster shows the devolution of Cooper’s apple-pie American cowboy. Nods to the game’s mechanics are everywhere, from Pip-boy wrist computers to the way slow-mo bullets tear up targeted limbs. Sub-plots feel like side quests. Most importantly, the way Lucy eventually gathers her party is very authentic to the RPG experience. Or to storytelling, of course.

Special mention has to be made of the series’ soundtrack. It features licensed pop standards and easy-listening songs from the 1940s, 50s and early 60s.  Those songs dripped with innuendo and the show uses them perfectly.

Darkness on the Edge of Town

The most extreme Fallout fans may quibble that the series doesn’t pull directly from any of the game’s stories. Instead, Fallout is establishing a world, its lore, and competing factions. Long term, this sets up consequent seasons and endless narratives. Over the course of eight episodes, the pace occasionally drags and the momentum gets temporarily lost. Overall, though, Fallout is one of the most entertaining video game adaptations in memory. It balances fan service with general audience appeal in a way that should satisfy nearly everyone.

Some stories need to be told in multiple formats. Sometimes a video game simply isn’t enough. It’s rare, but on occasion a story is so good it needs to reach those beyond the video game community. Italian game studio LKA announced a partnership with Swedish film-production company Studios Extraordinaires to bring the psychological thriller game, Martha is Dead, to cinema. The game, a recipient for awards at the 10th Italian Video Game Awards, has been praised for its innovation and art direction. Of course, a press release provides more insight into the production of the film. Additionally, the release provides comment from  Luca Dalcò, Founder and Director of LKA.

Martha is Dead is a psychological thriller. Set during WWII, the game introduces players to Giulia, the daughter of a German soldier. As Giulia, players will investigate the death of her twin sister Martha. Of course, the game will invite players into a story that blurs reality. In fact, the lines between reality and superstition will blur more and more as the story progresses. Now, even those who haven’t played the game will have the chance to experience the story.

“Every element of ‘Martha Is Dead’ was created with extraordinary precision and care. The narrative’s complexity was meticulously planned, visualized, and even shaped with a cinematic quality in mind,” Says Dalcò in the press release, “Bringing this to life as a film is a dream come true.”

Importantly, the film production of Martha is Dead is currently active. André Hedetoft and Andreas Troedsson are attached on the feature film as co-directors. Yet, the film is being shaped closely with Luca Dalcò alongside. 

Of course, Martha Is Dead is currently available on PlayStation 4/5, and PC via Steam.

We’re gamers. We’re used to surprises. Sometimes these are negative, like leaks, hacks, delayed games, and layoffs. Often though, we’re surprised by something good, like an unexpectedly great game or a game that defies the odds and evolves from terrible to awesome. Here are just a few of 2023’s happy surprises.

10. Metroid Prime Remastered

One of gaming’s most beloved titles, Metroid Prime got a bright, shiny remaster thanks to the folks at Retro Studios. Game technology has moved far beyond the capabilities of the Game Cube. Metroid Prime Remastered was released for the Nintendo Switch last February and in addition to seriously upgraded graphics, the Remaster also brought the controls up to modern standards and added some fun Easter eggs.

9. Super Mario Bros. Movie

Here’s a real surprise. The track record of films based on games has been spotty, at best. The live-action Mario movie from 1993 is hot garbage. So no one really expected the 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie to be anything more than an hours-long Nintendo commercial. Despite a paper-thin plot, the Super Mario Bros. Movie had great animation and colorful visuals, with voice acting from pros like Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Charlie Day, and Chris Pratt. Sure, it was still an ad for Nintendo, but an entertaining one.

8. Sea of Stars

Sometimes Indie games go for style over substance. Sometimes they have great art but poor gameplay or a warehouse full of tech issues. Now and then, though, an indie game hits on all cylinders. At first glance, Sea of Stars is a pretty standard pixel art style action RPG. Some of that’s true, but what’s also true is that Sea of Stars has an excellent plot, great characters, engaging mechanics, and a refined visual style. The surprise here is how much life is left in a familiar genre, if in the right hands.

7. Dave the Diver

Speaking of hit Indie games, Dave the Diver was one of the year’s most original releases and it has found a surprisingly large fan base. Part action adventure, part economic sim, and part pixel-art RPG, Dave the Diver is also partly based on a real-life person.

6. Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty DLC

Few games disappointed people as much as CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077. Following The Witcher 3’s mammoth success, Cyberpunk’s massive number of technical issues and unfinished content left gamers pretty angry at the developer. Three years later, Cyberpunk 2077 is now one of the best action games on the market. Constant updates, technical and narrative improvements, and the new Phantom Liberty DLC have made Cyberpunk 2077 2.0 a must-play RPG.

5. Lethal Company

Sometimes games are more than the sum of their parts. Not only is Lethal Company still in early access, it has relatively primitive, stylized graphics and still-missing content. This survival horror game is surprising for the loyal and energized fan base it has spawned, and for its addictive gameplay that’s tense, challenging, and fun.

4. Hogwarts Legacy

Sure, the films are beloved and the books are a cultural phenomenon, but let’s be honest, video games based on the Wizarding World franchise have all pretty much sucked. While it’s no surprise that the release of Hogwarts Legacy was a bit tainted by the controversy around author J.K. Rowling’s transphobic comments, it is surprising that Hogwarts Legacy overcame the, well, legacy of bad Harry Potter games to be an excellent action RPG.

3. Hi-Fi Rush

Infused with rhythm and music, Hi-Fi Rush has a colorful, lively art style and animation, incredible action, and a baller soundtrack full of licensed songs and original music. Addictive gameplay and finely tuned mechanics made Hi-Fi Rush a hit. Maybe the biggest surprise is how much gamers realized they missed playing a simple action game that was just lots of fun.

2. Lies of P

For anyone seriously addicted to Soulslikes, there was no game more surprising this year than Lies of P. Gorgeous to look at, mechanically sophisticated, and polished to a sheen, Lies of P was an homage to FromSoftware to the extreme. I mean, many gamers thought it was a worthy stand-in for Bloodborne 2.0 or the next Sekiro game. There were many, many Soulslikes released in 2023. None were better than Lies of P.

1. Baldur’s Gate 3

No one even remotely familiar with Larian Studios should have been surprised by Baldur’s Gate 3. Not to mention it had been cooking in early access for a long time. Great acting, great gameplay, great visuals, and music: Baldur’s Gate 3 has all of them, taken to a surprisingly high new standard. So what’s the surprise? Baldur’s Gate 3 seemed like it was poised for greatness.  But lots of games show promise, only to face plant on release day. Not so Baldur’s Gate 3. It surprised us by being everything we thought it could be.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is having a bit of a resurgence with the recent release of the new Five Nights at Freddy’s movie. And with good reason too, the movie is actually pretty damn good! I am definitely hoping we’ll see a direct sequel in the near future – the FNAF series has a ton of fun lore to showcase in future entries. So, to celebrate, we figured we’d dedicate this week’s cosplay feature to the FNAF cosplay fandom. It’s been a couple weeks since the annual New York Comic Con wrapped up its 2023 event. Four days of celebrities, panels, and – of course – cosplay! There has been an incredible number of images surfacing from the event from fans showing off their incredible cosplay content. Video game to television adaptations have been quite successful recently. Titles like The Last of Us have made the transition to live-action adaptations and shows like Arcane and, of course, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners have been filling the animation void. Yet, now, Cyberpunk is looking to take the next step in adaptations and make its own live-action project. That’s right, today CD Projekt Red announced a partnership with Anonymous Content to develop a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 project. Though the project is currently in early development, a press release provides more info on the project itself. 

Cyberpunk 2077 has already told a story in show form. The highly lauded anime, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, was the first foray of the franchise into a different medium of storytelling. Now, a new project is being developed for the series. Importantly, the project will be set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe. Yet, the story will be completely new. 

Of course, CD Projekt Red is working alongside Anonymous Content to develop the project. Interestingly, Anonymous Content is no stranger to making successful projects. The global media company has been responsible for Emmy-winning series such as True Detective and Mr. Robot and even award-winning films like The Revenant. 

Currently, the project is in its earliest stages of development. As such, the project is currently searching for writers. Furthermore, the project has recruited Anonymous Content’s Garrett Kemble, David Levine, Ryan Schwartz, and Bard Dorros to produce.

Oh great. Another video game movie is coming out. But wait, that’s not all there is to it. The game in question is 2022’s prospective GOTY Stray. It launched on PlayStation and PC, but recently landed on Xbox. On all fours, of course.

What gives this film adaptation some hope is the studio behind it. Annapurna Interactive the publisher of the game, but Annapurna Animation will be producing the movie. Hopefully, this means that the integrity of the game will be translated well into the film adaptation.

Robert Baird, lead at Annapurna Animation, said this about the game: “This is a game that’s all about what makes us human, and there are no humans in it. It’s a buddy comedy about a cat and a robot, and there’s such a hilarious dynamic. So, there’s comedy inherent in this, but there’s not one human being in this movie. I think it’s one of the reasons why the game was incredibly popular, that you are seeing the world through the point of view of an adorable cat. How did they pull that off, and how are we going to pull that off in the movie? We will, even though sometimes it feels impossible, but we know that’s the essence of the game and the key to telling the story.”

Stray has no spoken dialogue from the automatons the cat meets. That will likely change in the film, which will create opportunities for connections between the cat and B-12, and perhaps some other characters.

Stray is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

The glorious days of youth aren’t forever. In fact, it’s an ever-diminishing period of time. However, there are ways to keep a hold of it. Some of these ways even include monsters and the countryside of Sweden and Nevada. Today, Free League Publishing is happy to announce the release of the new expansion for their tabletop RPG, Tales From the Loop. The expansion, titled “They Grow Up So Fast”, introduces four new adventures for fans of the game to play that makeup one larger campaign. Of course, the new expansion also brings a new setting and a brand-new mystery to solve. A press release provides more information in addition to the store page for the expansion. 

Tales From the Loop places players in the role of kids during a 1980s that never happened. A countryside full of beasts and machines awaits. Of course, with them comes a world of mysteries both magical and dangerous. Importantly, players will select from different character archetypes or classes such as the Bookworm, the Troublemaker, the Popular Kid, and the Weirdo. As this group players will adventure throughout the countryside of Sweden or Nevada. Here they will encounter several different types of robots and monsters as they shirk their normal life troubles and replace them with a more mysterious kind of trouble. 

Importantly the expansion, “They Grow Up So Fast”, introduces a brand new setting to the TTRPG. Now, players can adventure throughout the countryside of the UK Loop of Norfolk Broads. Of course, the four new adventures that come with the expansion work to create an overarching campaign that makes up the four seasons of a year. 

Tales From the Loop is available for purchase via the Free League webstore. More information about “They Grow Up So Fast” is available on the game’s website.

Just this week, whispers spread that the Borderlands movie might be dead. It had been in production since 2021 and the last we heard of it, reshoots were taking place in January. Earlier today, Lionsgate and Gearbox announced that it would be hitting theaters in August 2024.

Halfway through 2021, fans were treated to some cast “photos”. The actors were shot in-costume to show their silhouettes. Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, and Kevin Hart will be playing Tannis, Tiny Tina, Krieg, Claptrap, Lilith, and Roland, respectively.

With the release date about 13 months away, this means Lionsgate has over a year to actually show us something new. Now that the release date is set (for now), hopefully we can get a trailer soon. It does not inspire confidence that our only look at the Borderlands movie is a bunch of shadows.

I will say, the cartoony shapes in the silhouettes, like Lilith’s hair and Krieg’s outfit, do set the right tone. If the rest of the film can match the game’s over-the-top style, fans might find something they like. Hopefully, Kevin Hart will be playing a character that isn’t Kevin Hart. Maybe Jack Black’s performance as Claptrap will carry the movie like he did as Bowser.

The Borderlands movie is expected to hit theaters on August 9th, 2024.

When it comes to NetherRealm Studios’ flagship fighting game, there are some elements that stand out more than others. We need brutal fights, violent finishers, stylish characters, and Kombat. With the live-action films, it looks they will keep those elements front and center with Mortal Kombat 2.

In the 2021 reboot film, the dialogue and story may have been a little lackluster. However, the important components above were there. Recently, new actors have been cast as villains in Mortal Kombat 2. These characters include Shao Kahn, Sindel, Jerrod, and Quan Chi.

Many of us know who Shao Kahn and Sindel are. Jerrod has not been a playable character before and was Sindel’s husband before Shao Kahn’s forced killed him. Kind Jerrod will be played by Desmond Chaim. Quan Chi is an ally of Shang Tsung and was first playable in Mortal Kombat 4. He is a powerful sorcerer and necromancer, and he will be played by Damon Herriman.

New castings for ‘MORTAL KOMBAT 2’ have been announced, including:

• Martyn Ford as Shao Kahn
• Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod
• Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel

Shao Khan’s casting is very exciting. He will be played by bodybuilder Martyn Ford, who is HUGE. Ford hasn’t had many prominent acting roles, but has appeared in F9: The Fast Saga and Kingsman: The Golden Circle. Sindel, whose daughter Mileena appeared in the first film, will be played by Ana Thu Ngyuen. She also has not had many roles in feature films, but hopefully we see her shine as Sindel.

Mortal Kombat 2 has no release date yet and is currently in pre-production.

It is truly an exciting time in gaming when a titan of the industry begins a new journey. Especially when that journey is one that has the capability to impact the entire landscape of gaming’s future. Dan Houser co-founder of Rockstar Games, has announced that he has founded a new media company known as Absurd Ventures. A lead writer and creative director for game franchises like Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto, and Bully, Houser has many years of experience in the industry. Of course, his new media company is hoping to translate this experience to new IPs across all platforms. 

“We are building Absurd Ventures to create new universes and to tell great stories, wherever and however we can,” Says Houser in a press release. 

Importantly, the company is focussing on building narrative worlds with a focus on characters. Of course, these creations will be made for a diverse variety of genres. However, these narratives will not only be made for games. The company will be developing content for everything from live-action to animation to games. Furthermore, fans of the company can also look forward to books, graphic novels, and scripted podcasts. It appears that Absurd Ventures will cover a wide variety of content. 

Currently, interested fans can sign up on the company’s website to receive exclusive content and company updates. Until 2020, Houser was the creative director and lead writer for Rockstar’s games. Interestingly, five of Rockstar Games games have landed on the top ten games of all-time list. So, a huge congratulations and good luck to Houser and Absurd Ventures on their new journey into the world.
