Retropolis 2 Review

Retropolis 2: Never Say Goodbye is the follow-up effort to The Secret of Retropolis from indie game developer Peanut Button. It is being released on all VR platforms and the version for this review deals with the PSVR 2 version. The game wears its inspiration on its sleeve as it opens with a Raymond Chandler quote. All facets of the game ooze film noir from the settings, the music, and the characters.

The Retropolis series is a point and click adventure series set in a retro future. You play as a, of course, a private detective but a robot private detective by the name of Philip Log. All the characters are robots. That includes the obligatory femme fatale, Jenny Montage. Jenny has a penchant for trouble and once again, it’s up to Log to save her.

Never Say Goodbye is rooted in the 90s style of adventure point and click games. The game places you in the center of a location where you cannot move. But you can rotate 360 degrees. Unfortunately, the game restricts turning to click turns, which coupled to your fixed position, feels very confining. It’s a bit jarring at first, especially if you come from a game where movement is much more open.

Once you settle into how to play the game, the story and the puzzles win you over. The writing in this game is top-notch. Due to the manipulations of the evil Mr. X, Jenny has effectively lost her memory. Also very strong is the voice acting in the game. The only one that you may quibble with, is the actor that does the voice of Log.

Film Noir Stylings

For noir type games, the music is vitally important. In such films, music functions as another character. Without it, no matter how good the locations are at conveying a dark or mysterious place, the element of tension and mood is not complete. Peanut Button must know this, because the music is spot on. You really get that dangerous, smoky yet sensuous vibe.

On the visual side, the hand-crafted art is great. There are black and white scenes, that mixed with the SF movie – Metropolis inspired city skyline shots, give off both film noir and retro-future vibes. The character designs also play into the genre archetypes for the detective, femme fatale, villain, police, and denizens of the city.

As great as the visuals are, there are some artistic choices made you may or may not agree with. The game has an intentional soft look, undoubtedly done to enhance the intended vintage look. Subjectively, the look may appeal to. However, my reaction is the developers are not taking into account the medium of VR. A soft look for a flat game is fine. However, because of the current state of VR tech, a clear image is hard to attain.

To better serve Retropolis in VR, they should choose an image with a sharp look. An image where the edges are accentuated would allow the three dimensionality and space between everything to really pop. If you’re familiar with what a Viewmaster is, the overlapping of two identical pictures creates sharply delineated layers of depth. Such a look would be ideal for Retropolis. Of course, this is totally subjective but I feel it to be the better approach.

Location, Location, Location

The game breaks into five chapters, each with its own locations. You will find yourself in various locations, like a jail cell, a lighthouse, Log’s office, and a bar. Mostly, the locations are standard fare for a noir mystery. What makes them unique is the mix of 1940s architecture with retro tech objects. Yet things like rotary phones are still prominent, further cementing the mix between new and old.

Once you arrive at a location, the game presents puzzles to you. Log interacts with the objects like Mr. Fantastic with the use of his robo-extendo arms. Objects and interactions vary. You may pick up pieces to use later on. Or you may be flipping levers or selecting an object like a card. Some puzzles are multi-leveled, meaning you need to go to another location to proceed. You may need another object or you may find clues to how to solve a puzzle on another floor.

To accommodate the need to take objects to other locations, you have a robot companion that acts as your inventory system. It also acts as a high level objective log. However, it only tells you what the overall aim is. It does not provide any of the sub-quests.

On the technical side, the game has very limited options. You can only use click-turning. An option for smooth turning would be nice. Also, the audio options are odd. There are no separate volume controls for the music and the voice acting.

Retropolis 2 Fits the Puzzle Game

Besides a few technical deficiencies, understandable for a small developer, Retropolis 2 is a splendid game. The story and characters are engaging. The puzzles are fair. And the whole vibe of the game is engrossing and entertaining.

If you are looking for a fun mystery that won’t take you ages to solve, then Retropolis 2 will fill that bill. Fans of film noir will find much to like here. So will fans of puzzle games. Will Log rescue Jenny? Only if you help him out.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution Preview

COGConnected was recently invited to attend a Saints & Sinners Chapter 2 Preview. Here are our reactions.

There are a plethora of Walking Dead games and some of them are in VR. Easily, the best of the bunch was developer Skydance Interactive’s – The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners released for PSVR on January 23, 2020. It featured top-notch physics, an engrossing storyline, a solid crafting system, and excellent VR implementation. The game quickly became one of the standout releases on PSVR.

Saints & Sinners 2 is so good that the game vies for the number one spot as the best all-time PSVR game with Resident Evil 7.

The first game ended on Day 69 with the looming presence of The Tower in downtown New Orleans before you. In The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution, the object, besides having one of the longest game titles, is to continue the story.

In the Saints & Sinners preview you play as The Tourist, and face a new story campaign with all the new challenges it will entail. You leave the suburbs and head to downtown New Orleans, the French Quarter to be specific. This means you will explore new maps, meet new characters, and face greater danger. Of course, that requires new and more lethal weapons. The sequel literally picks up from the original as you start the next chapter on Day 70.

Going Downtown New Orleans

Your base of operations this time is Sonny’s Pawnshop. It is here you will return to rest, craft, and interact with Sonny to find out useful details.

As with any sequel, Chapter 2 aims to up the ante in enemies and carnage. You’ll fend off more walkers, now able to fall from one level to the next to continue their unstoppable pursuit, as well as more complex battles against armed human opponents guarding The Tower. In Chapter 1, you got to wield a fire axe. In Chapter 2, say hello to your little friend, the chainsaw. Knowing the physics based actions of the first game, this new addition will no doubt push the envelope further in terms of immersive tactile feedback.

The weapons fun doesn’t stop there though. You’ll tout a sawed-off shotgun and a submachine gun for maximum visceral carnage impact. To aid in aiming of sited weapons, a laser site will be available too – this also applies to the bow and arrow. Silencers will also be possible to allow you to keep oh so, crucially silent. All this, and dual weapon wielding too!

You’ll venture into the Quarters of New Orleans to face new combat challenges. One new challenge is located in a bar, The Speakeasy. Here an alarm is set off which triggers music that is blasted on speakers located all throughout the establishment. You’ll fend off walkers, some falling from upper levels, as you struggle to silence every speaker. Never has the 3D audio present in VR games ever been put to such vital use!

All Paths Lead to the Tower

As you push towards The Tower, you’ll face a new combat wrinkle, Boss Enemies. One such baddie is named Gerrick. He’s a big, heavily armored opponent against which your chainsaw has no effect. Good thing there are expanded crafting options for you to explore.

In the first game, the night equated to death. When the day-ending bell started to toll, it was time for you to get out of dodge and back to your home base. Or face certain death. In Saints & Sinners2, you can choose to do certain missions at night. Besides your flashlight, you’ll be able to use UV goggles or flares.

It will be up to the player to decide whether or not to tackle missions in the night or during the day. However, even though night missions bring greater danger they also greater rewards. The same mission done during daylight may prove to be much more difficult.

Saints and Sinners is one of the best PSVR games ever. Based on the preview, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners – Chapter 2: Retribution is a sure-fire sequel that will not only continue the story but elevate it by introducing new gameplay elements that are VR enhanced. The game is scheduled to be released for the PSVR and other platforms in late 2022. What is even more exciting is the prospect of it being one of the first PSVR 2 games when the headset launches in, now confirmed by Sony, early 2023. With the improved visuals and haptics, this is poised to be a big release.

VR Game Wands Alliances Set To Launch On Steam Later This Year

Cortopia Studios alongside Beyond Frames officially released Wands Alliances on virtual reality systems on June 30th, 2022. The game currently supports Quest 2 and provides players with a unique, competitive and tactical experience. The developers recently confirmed that the game will be releasing on Steam in Autumn 2022. There is no confirmed release date just yet. Interested persons can wishlist the game here and will require an HTC Vive, Meta Quest, Oculus Rift or Valve Index to play.

In the game, players will hop into intense 3v3 battles where they must master tactical aspects of the game such as teleportation, spell casting and spell customization. Every decision matters on the battlefield as it can be the difference between victory and defeat. Furthermore, players will start by choosing their class, spell and winning by either completing the objective or defeating their enemy. Additionally, players will fight in Victorian London.

Wands Alliances is a successor to Wands and it has continued to develop upon its predecessor by adding more content, customization options and an improved virtual reality experience. The game is full of action, fun and appears to be a ‘VR Harry Potter’ experience as players navigate the level using spells to win.

Virtual Reality is growing immensely over the past few years and it’s interesting to see more money being spent on it. With the release of more games on all platforms and improved accessibility, it has a bright future!

What are your thoughts on Wands Alliances? Do you enjoy Virtual Reality games? Which platform do you own? Will you checking the game out when it releases on Steam? Are you interested in its release on various platforms today? Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter and Facebook.

2 Saints 2 Sinners

If there’s anything we have learned from The Walking Dead, it’s that things never really die. The show on AMC may be coming to an end, but the spin-offs are still shambling on and raising again. In the gaming-sphere, the VR title Saints & Sinners is getting a second chapter, coming sometime this year.

Skydance Interactive and Skybound Entertainment recently released a short teaser for the second game. It appears that the player will be going up against someone who calls himself “a broken man”. Players will also be returning as the Tourist from the first game.

The Walking Dead

The trailer also shows off a bit of gameplay. It seems that players will be able to dual-wield weapons. We see the player using a revolver in one hand and a makeshift bladed weapon in the other. After those weapons fail, they pull out a chainsaw, which players can look forward to using.

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners Chapter 2 appears to take place shortly after the first game ends. The story can end multiple ways, so hopefully the choices made in the first game can be imported or selected again to influence the new game.

Chapter 2 will apparently be available sometime in late 2022. It will launch on Meta Quest and Meta Rift headsets. Saints & Sinners part 1 eventually was released on PSVR, so hopefully that same audience will get to play it on PSVR or PSVR 2 as well.

Did you play Saints & Sinners? Will you be picking up the sequel? Let us know in the comments below.

RPG Demeo Moves from VR to PC https://cogconnected.com/preview/demeo-preview/ Tue, 15 Feb 2022 16:00:49 +0000 https://cogconnected.com/?post_type=preview&p=302606 Demeo is a a classic tabletop fantasy roleplaying game, originally released for VR and now coming to PC, featuring cross-platform PC/VR play.

The post RPG Demeo Moves from VR to PC appeared first on COGconnected.

Demeo Preview

When it appeared on the Meta Quest and Rift, Demeo did something pretty unique. It recreated the experience of playing a tabletop RPG with your friends in VR. It was all there: the rec room, the tabletop, the miniatures–animated, of course–and a dungeon set that real life players would die for. All you needed to do was rope in three nerds with headsets and you were all set. Now, Resolution Games is bringing Demeo to PC. What’s more, it includes cross-play with the VR version.

Demeo is a turn-based RPG with classic tabletop fantasy game vibes. The layout of each dungeon is procedurally generated and each match consists of three levels with a boss at the end. Although it isn’t a deck-building game per se, Demeo does include card battle elements, with players using ability cards during their turns. Gold earned in battle is used to buy cards between levels. The PC version will include 60 cards that either deal damage, heal, or cast spells.

While playing Demeo in VR was novel, Resolution is hoping that the game itself will draw players to PC. During a recent press event, I had the chance to play the PC version with members of the team. I emphasize “had the chance.” Due to a rare bug in the pre-release software–since patched–I was unable to load the game. This gave me the opportunity to sit back and watch a fellow journalist play.

Pick a Class and Go

If you’ve played Dungeons and Dragons or any CRPG, you know what to expect from Demeo. You select a character from five classes–hunter, sorcerer, guardian, assassin, or bard–each with some starting ability cards. The PC version can be played with others or solo, with one person controlling the whole party. While the VR release originally only included only one adventure, the PC version will include all of the game’s content so far: ‘The Black Sarcophagus’ dungeon, the sewers of Sunderhaven in ‘The Realm of the Rat King’, and the druid-filled Drych Forest in ‘Roots of Evil.’

Each of the three levels is fairly compact but filled with monsters, traps, surprises, and secrets. Gameplay is challenging, requiring the party to communicate as in any good tabletop RPG. In the demo I watched, the party came close to being entirely wiped several times. Thanks to a variety of approaches to combat–and some lucky dice rolls–the team of heroes snatched victory from the slimy monster jaws of defeat. The smart use of ability cards helped turn the tide at several key moments. Even with the game’s creators guiding characters, it took a good thirty minutes to clear the first level.

The developers noted that because they want each game to be a new experience, there is no character development or persistence between matches. You can’t level up your wizard or assassin outside of a one-time adventure.

VR to PC and Back Again

I haven’t played the VR version, but I really liked Demeo’s visuals on PC. The environmental art, character design, and animations looked like they sprang from many hours around the tabletop. There were some impressive lighting and spell effects and the UI did a good job of getting the information to the player without clutter. I’m a big fan of tabletop minis and I liked Demeo’s top-down, “desktop diorama” vibe.

Because the levels can be relatively small, it’s possible for the party and enemies to be packed closely together. Now and then it was a little hard to read the action. Happily, there were usually ways for characters to move out of the crowd and find a better position. The dungeon level was dark, moody, and appropriately mysterious.

Cross-play opportunities between VR and PC are rare. It’s clear that Resolution planned this from the start, and I can’t imagine a more appropriate type of game to bring together the two groups of players. With controller support and a long list of additional content planned, Demeo looks like an RPG with real promise for both communities.

Demeo comes to Steam Early Access on April 7, 2022.

Wanderer PSVR Review

With some games, you instantly know from the opening sequence whether you are going to like them. Wanderer nails it right from the start. The orchestral opening awe-inspiring music swirls around you as the title screen appears. Overhead, an old DC3 four-prop airliner hangs, while strewn around you lay relics from various ages.

As you look around, you realize something is wrong. There is a familiar picture of a moonwalking astronaut but it’s not American Neil Armstrong but an unknown Russian cosmonaut. At this moment, you know an amazing adventure is about to unfold. This is a game that screams of developers with a vision who know what they are doing.

That impression continues when you hit the start button to see the game expertly use the PSVR’s OLED display ability for deep blacks. The screen fades to black and a slick menu in bright yellow sleeves appears. It just looks beautiful.

That beauty continues when the first game screen appears. The year is 2061 and you are in Boston. However, it is a flooded city. A deserted Beantown has canals for streets, and you travel through it via a barge-like boat. You could almost believe you are in the world from The Last Of Us Part 2. While not photorealistic, the city displays amazing detail, especially for the PSVR. Wanderer is easily one of the best-looking PSVR games.

A Journey Across Space And Time

Your initial goal is to find your grandfather’s apartment, which takes some doing, and is a mini-adventure in of itself. The beginning sections showcase the interactive complexity of the game. You can pick up many of the objects in the game and either use, examine or throw them. For example, there is a chalkboard and you can pick up chalk and write on the board. You swiftly learn that objects behave in a realistic, physics-based manner.

There are some immersion-breaking limitations, however. Only objects that highlight when looked at are usable. This limitation is, in actuality, a good thing because there are so many objects needed to solve puzzles. Also, some worlds visited have invisible walls from time to time that abruptly smack you in the face. The most jarring moment came when I was walking on the moon.

Oh, did I forget to mention that Wanderer is a time-travelling game? Not only do you go to different eras but also exotic locations. Or that you will meet famous people like Tesla? Well, you sure do. The great thing about Wanderer is that all these locations are not static settings. Usually, it’s during a moment of conflict. You’ll end up on the moon where the lunar landing has crashed, bump into Tesla who can’t get his experiments in electricity to work, play drums at a live rock ’n’ roll concert in 1969, or help crack codes in an arms race during World War 2.

In each location, you solve puzzles. Often, the solution requires you to jump back and forth between time periods to procure items to do so. Fortunately, you are not alone on these quests. You have your grandfather’s unusual wristwatch that goes by the name of Samuel. He has a face that looks like the banker from Monopoly and sounds a lot like Tim Curry. Samuel is more than a guide. He also carries your inventory and, most importantly, is your time travel device.

Time Traveling Mechanics

As you travel to each time period, you leap into the body of someone, a la Sam Beckett from the Quantum Leap TV show. While Wanderer is a high adventure game, at its core, it’s a puzzle game. It’s in these sections of gameplay where it feels the most Myst-like. However, you don’t feel the claustrophobia of that game which restricted movement to rigid teleportations. Thanks to VR, you can move freely throughout the environment.

Tied to the location-specific puzzle-solving is a grander overall story arc. Your grandfather wants you to complete his mission. A mission to return the timeline to its original state. It’s a storyline quite popular today, with all the franchise metaverses prevalent today. It makes for an engrossing game.

On the technical side, Wanderer has gorgeous graphics, great audio and the expected VR comfort options. You can elect to teleport or use free locomotion, but some sections require the use of teleport to jump. New Zealand developers, Oddᗺoy + M-Theory, have shown some major technical muscle with this game. It looks simply brilliant on the aging PSVR platform.

I cannot emphasize enough what a grand adventure Wanderer is. The game has the right mix of action and puzzle-solving to keep things from getting stale. Voice acting and the orchestral score are top-notch and bring added gravitas to the proceedings. The only niggle in the presentation comes with the actions of the NPCs. Sometimes they are oblivious to your presence and movement. This makes their obviously scripted behaviour all that more artificial.

A Wanderer Trilogy…

Wanderer is a true treat and if it does well enough. Oddᗺoy + M-Theory has plans to make a trilogy of games. The game launched with some annoying bugs but the developers have been quick and diligent to respond and provide patches. The version of the game I played ran flawlessly after the patches. Wanderer is available on all VR platforms – PSVR, SteamVR, and Oculus. Check this one out. You won’t regret it.

Apparently, Capcom Might Have Gotten Some Ideas for One of Its Games Elsewhere

Capcom recently resolved a lawsuit involving a copyright strike. Video games, and video game studios, can get all sorts of lawsuits for various reasons. Sometimes the lawsuits are dismissed. Sometimes, they are settled out of court. Sometimes, there does not seem to be any basis for the case. But for this case, it may be the opposite.

Resident Evil

While there has been some talk as of late of Resident Evil 4 getting remade, it turns out that there were some problems with it. The problem is of the copyright kind. Judy A. Juracek, a designer, alleged that Capcom used at least 80 photographs from a CD-ROM, which was part of a 1996 publication. Juracek claimed that these images, which came from her book Spaces, were used as textures and images in not only Resident Evil, but Devil May Cry.

And seeing the side-by-side comparison, there does appear to be a good point. From the image under the Resident Evil game logo to wall textures, and stained glass walls, the comparison from the photography book and the video game references seem pretty overt. There was even one that still reportedly had the same file name before it was scaled and cropped for usage.

As of now, however, St Onge Steward Johnston & Reens LLC, the firm representing Juracek during the case, has said that the case has been filed for dismissal by both parties. The specifics have been kept under wraps, so we do not know the details of the resolution. Originally, it is known that Juracek’s lawyers were seeking $2,500 to $25,000 for each photograph used by Capcom in damages. That would make the range of what was sought 200,000 to 2,000,000, possibly more.

Whether that means that we will see changes in the Resident Evil 4 upcoming remake, or possibly in a rehauled Devil May Cry, that is currently not known. We’ll stay tuned for more updates.

Today, the developers have announced that they’ve been working on a single player campaign for two years. The team has also indicated that they’re working on the title and that it will be free!

In terms of story, the developers are going big. The game has always dealt with massive operations, hangars and galaxies. Furthermore, resources in the game include fuel, steel, munitions and more. Therefore, in the campaign, the team intend to go big and push the limits of virtual reality.

In an effort to make the world massive, there will be a lot of endearing and quirky characters. As the new recruit, players must assess them, make relationships and explore the world. Furthermore, players will be planet hopping across areas with unique environments, gripping stories and more. Players must keep aware of their surroundings to be safe. Additionally, players will be able to fully explore these new spaces with their new crew.

The original composer will be part of the team creating the score for the expansion. The final flash of credits and score will add the cherry on top of the experience. Therefore, the developers have confirmed the expansion and that it is free!

What are your thoughts on Vox Machinae? Are you a fan of virtual reality games? Do you own a virtual reality system? Are you looking forward to a single player campaign in Vox Machinae? Let us know in the comments below or on Twitter and Facebook.

And It Turns Out They’re Very Uninterested

NFTs have been very much in the news lately and they’ve been a source of controversy. Whether used for Art or used for Video Games, the public has a scattered opinion about it. But what we haven’t heard from as of late is what the Game Industry thinks of it, especially in the face of some companies deciding to go forward with it or against it (whether it is in an auction or not).

Turns out, Game Developers have an extreme lack of interest when it comes to NFTs and cryptocurrency. According to Game Developers Conference, 70% of developers said that they, and their studios, are not interested in using NFTs. And 72% of those who answered the survey also stated that they and their studios are not interested in cryptocurrencies either, which are often used for NFT purchases.

However, 28% of game developers said that their studios were, at least, somewhat interested in cryptocurrency and NFTs. But only one percent at this point of the writing is using either one currently within games, which is, considering the public backlash, not surprising. With the amount of energy that NFTs and cryptocurrency use, there are larger carbon emissions that occur due to this- not to mention, there is the side of artists having their work stolen for others to profit off of.

It’s interesting though to also note that in other parts of the report, only about 17% of game developers admit to taking part in the so-called big Metaverse project, which is supposedly the next big step of the internet and bringing in virtual reality as a commonality- and possibly blockchain games as well. It’s not a surprise, as, from the sounds of it, this may be the next big turf war between companies. This could be used instead to band together to form an internet space.

So, if we’re lucky, we may be safe from seeing NFTs and cryptocurrency invading the games we chose to play. Well. At least most of them.

Prove Yourself to Be the Toughest Fighter in Down and Out

The game developer Zatun announced a brand new VR brawler game today. Available on Oculus Rift S and Steam, Down and Out is a classic street brawler with a VR twist.

Down and Out follows the story of a homeless fighter who climbs to the top of the street fighting circle. Hidden in the shadows of a big city, your rise to notoriety will throw you into a brutal hidden world.

Down and Out Cover Artwork

The game’s combat system is inspired by real-life fighting styles that players will use to make their way through waves of opponents. Players can essentially build their own combat style, changing it every fight to what that best suits their opponent.

In addition to the waves of enemies, the VR brawler also features a unique cast of characters that will be your friends. They will help you along your journey as you climb the ranks and secure wealth and renown.

Down and Out uses a visual style that combines stylized 3D with a classic comic book aesthetic. Between fights, players can explore this stylized city to uncover hidden treasures and other secrets. Other activities include being able to mark your territory with graffiti and playing basketball to make some quick cash.

There are several ways players can customize their characters. As they explore the game’s open world, they can also customize their fighter to their desired look. Players can also adopt a pet dog to accompany them on their fighting journey.

Down and Out is available today for Oculus Rift S and Steam. Do you think you have what it takes to make it in the street brawling world?

A press release provides more details about the colorful world of the game.

Bring Life to a Barren World

Watch deserts spring to life. Sprout trees from the ground and grow your world. All of this is possible in TREBUCHET Studio’s new VR game Winds and Leaves that launched today on Steam. In addition to the launch, TREBUCHET included a press release where they described their game.

The idea of Winds and Leaves seems basic on the surface. To save a barren world, the player character must plant trees. A game about growing forests, pretty tame and relaxing. So it would seem. At the same time the player must work to discover secret knowledge to stop a looming apocalypse from destroying the world.

Winds and Leaves Feature

“Winds & Leaves is a unique VR experience filled with awe and poetry,” says the press release.

In fact, according to the press release, players will explore an ever-changing world. As they plant and grow trees players must discover ways to make different tree species adapt. There are several biomes and types of trees that add fun to planting. On top of all of this, the soundtrack grows as your plants do.

“Enjoy a procedural living soundtrack that reacts to the world around you,” the press release explains.

Alongside the information already presented to players, TREBUCHET also released a launch trailer.

The launch trailer shows off the brilliantly colorful animation style and the core gameplay. Players can see how, from VR first-person, the player-character interacts with the world. Jumping from tree to tree, grabbing fruit or seeds, and planting them in the ground. The trailer also shows off different biomes to explore, and includes shots of a vast, distant, world.

Winds and Leaves has launched on Steam today. It will be coming to the Oculus Rift Store early next year. Currently, the game is compatible with most PC VR headsets including the Oculus Rift and Valve Index.

Unplugged: Air Guitar VR Review – Rock Star Image Training https://cogconnected.com/review/unplugged-air-guitar-vr-review/ Fri, 29 Oct 2021 11:55:51 +0000 https://cogconnected.com/?post_type=review&p=290416 Unplugged, the VR air guitar sim, is here to give your living room shred sessions some serious punch! You'll shred in ways never before conceived of!

Unplugged: Air Guitar VR Review

Everyone has performed an air guitar solo in their living room at least once. If you somehow haven’t, you’re missing out! It looks incredibly silly but it is, in fact, totally rad. Unplugged is a high tech extension of this low tech fantasy. Suddenly people are cheering for you, the stakes are higher, and it sounds awesome. Assuming you and the hand tracking get along, you’ll have an excellent time.

That’s right! You control Unplugged like you would any proper air guitar- no controllers required. For me, this produced some mixed results. By which I mean every motion but the stupid finger pinch button click worked great. If you’ve ever used hand tracking on a VR rig, you’ve used this one countless times. If you haven’t, it sucks more or less every single time. Everything else is perfect! Moving your hand from chord to chord is pretty much spot-on. The strums hit just like they’re supposed to, as well. It’s truly just the act of grabbing and pinching that the whole game whiffs at.

No Controller Required, Of Course

Although really, the fault for this one lies with the Quest itself. Perhaps if you’re running this game on the Quest 2, such problems won’t mean anything to you. But this is a problem I’ve experienced all across the Quest and its many apps. Thankfully you never have to do it during songs. But still, adjusting your guitar beforehand? It’s like trying to put down a plastic straw wrapper. Does that make sense? I’m saying you can neither pick up nor put down this instrument without a mighty struggle.

Unplugged: Air Guitar

But what about the music? It’s amazing, assuming you were a teenager in the 90s. Which I very much was! The tracklist isn’t actually confined to a single generation or subgenre, though it does feel specifically tailored to the smoky basement suites of my distant youth. I could listen to every track repeatedly, which is good news, given my skill level. Here’s the tricky part, where I confess to a love of rhythm games that vastly outpaces my skills. To that end, I can’t score Unplugged on any rhythm game toughness scale. What I can do, is tell you that certain finger placements caused me real, actual pain. There’s things I’d never done with my fingers in my life, before I played this game. The tracklist is excellent, though.

Your teacher and coach throughout this air guitar journey is Satchel, the lead guitarist of Steel Panther. His teaching style is mostly focused on rock star attitude, along with a basic primer on the mechanics. By the end of the tutorial track, you’re more or less prepared for the business of rocking out. It’s weird, having this real human in a glam rock wig light your way through an ephemeral world of cheers and glittering visual effects. Beyond Satchel’s occasional presence, the graphics in Unplugged are downright utilitarian.

Just You And The Stage

To be fair, they aren’t bad graphics. You’re plopped into a little backstage setup with all the usual accessories, every poster and piece of gear adding more authenticity. The guitars, the menu catalogs, and the song effects are all crisp and polished. It just feels a bit spare. Like, all the processing power and memory is being funneled into the act of playing air guitar. Everything else is drained or blurred into obscurity in service to this vision. I understand the decision to do so, especially while actually playing. You get such intense tunnel vision that extra assets would be kind of a waste. The visuals just feel a little empty, at least in the brief moments between songs.

Unplugged is the long-awaited answer to the question “how cool is air guitar, really?” It turns out air guitar is actually Guitar Hero without the massive custom controller taking up space in your living room. Which is pretty cool! If you’ve got a head for rhythm games, along with a lingering fondness for timeless rock songs, there’s a lot to latch on to here. The hand tracking is better than you’d expect, although there are a couple of choke points to contend with. Furthermore, those quality motion controls can’t stop certain finger positions from being real bone-breakers. Small hitches aside, Unplugged is an unconventional, engaging interpretation of VR rhythm games.

It’s Been a Great First Half For VR Games in 2021

From its earliest days, VR gaming has had its doubters, and there are still a few to this day. But VR continues to stubbornly defy them all, as its install base continues to grow and headsets like the PSVR and Oculus Quest 2 move millions of units. Sorry haters, but VR gaming is here to stay — in fact, this year has been among the best for great offerings on all VR platforms. Here are 5 of the best VR games from the first half of 2021.

best vr games

5. Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife  — Released April 22 on All VR Platforms

Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife, from Swedish studio Fast Travel Games, is a horror game perfectly suited to VR. You play a recently-deceased spirit who must float, disembodied, through a huge creepy mansion in order to find out why and how you died. Unlike many other horror games, Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife doesn’t lean heavily on jump scares; instead, it makes masterful use of loneliness, eerie silence, and unsettling scenes to toy with your mind and instill a creeping sense of dread rather than any cheap, sudden shocks. Terror hangs in the air of Barclay Manor like a fog, surrounding you and making each new room and turn of a corner a butt-clenching experience, always straddling the line between excitement and nausea. As our own Thi Chao said in her review, “Wraith: The Oblivion – Afterlife creates an incredibly compelling narrative with a world that compliments it fully.” And in the 360-degree environment of VR, you’ll never shake that feeling of having something behind you — because a lot of the time, there is.

4. The Climb 2 — Released March 4 on Oculus

If you are looking for a serene, relaxing experience, but you also want to feel intense fear, then The Climb 2 is a perfect VR experience for you. Yes, those two emotions might seem contradictory, but somehow developers Crytek make it work, delivering an unsettlingly-realistic climbing experience that really demonstrates the degree of immersion that VR is capable of. While its predecessor, The Climb, took place in natural environments like rock faces, this sequel places you in urban landscapes like skyscrapers — and for some reason it dramatically raises the death-defying stakes. If nothing else, The Climb 2 is a great workout as you physically reach for and grab handholds while fighting sweat and your stamina meter, doing your best not to slip and plunge to your doom. And those gorgeous hyper-realistic environments are almost a curse, tempting you to stop and look around and then get hit with immediate, vertigo-paralyzing regret once you realize how frickin’ high above the ground you are. Anyone with an Oculus — and a stainless-steel stomach — needs to check this one out.

3. Sniper Elite VR — Released July 8 on All VR Platforms

The Sniper Elite series of games is well-known for its visceral, authentic shooting, with that infamous X-Ray Kill Cam animation — a slo-mo close-up of your perfect shot sailing through the innards of your target — a thrilling if gory little visual reward that never gets old. And now, Sniper Elite VR ups the immersion to the next level, bringing you closer to the sniper’s world than ever. Using regular controllers or, better yet, a PSVR Aim controller, you’ll use your scope, hold your breath and stalk your prey in the most authentic sniper shooting experience out there, short of signing up for Special Forces in real life. In our review of Sniper Elite VR, Lou Sytsma raved that “it’s got great gameplay, excellently designed levels, and the best scope use of any game to date.” Check this one out for yourself, and you’ll see why Sniper Elite VR is a game that brings new meaning to the phrase “surgical strike.”

2. Demeo — Released May 6 on PCVR and Oculus

Demeo is, quite simply, the best recreation of a tabletop RPG board game experience you can get in VR right now. Teamed up with up to three other humans in a co-op campaign through a Dungeons & Dragons-like quest, you physically move your chosen hunter, sorcerer, assassin or guardian game pieces and play ability cards on a virtual game board. There’s even cool D&D dice that you pick up and roll! While the game itself is a bit straightforward and lacking in-depth, the real thrill of playing Demeo comes in the coordination and teamwork involved in successfully fighting through its virtual catacombs. You’ll be swarmed by all manner of trolls, spiders and other monsters in your sojourns through the sewers, but it’s a major rush when you and your team manage to work together to get through it all and defeat the final boss. And on top of all that, there’s a whole new DLC — Realm of the Rat King — that’s just been added at no extra charge.

1. Hitman 3 — Released January 20 on PSVR

Ok, admittedly Hitman 3 VR has its issues. The graphics are unimpressive, and it doesn’t incorporate motion controls very well. But those limitations can partly be attributed to the weakness of the PSVR, to which it is an exclusive and which is a VR system that’s starting to show its hardware limitations. But still, even with those complaints, Hitman 3 VR is an amazing VR title that you need to experience. It faithfully brings all of the content of the base Hitman 3 game to your PSVR headset — that’s all of the missions, with no content removed. But that’s not all! You also get access to play the previous games in the Trilogy as well — again, all in VR. That’s astounding, and it certainly makes Hitman 3 among the most content-rich VR titles yet released. Our man Paul Sullivan called Hitman 3 “a fantastic way to spend a few dozen (or hundred) hours.” Now imagine that, but in VR, and you can see why this one is a no-brainer.

Those are the Top 5 VR Games so far in 2021, but there’s still lots of time left in the year. We’re hoping to see some more heavyweights come to VR later in the year, like After the Fall and Assassin’s Creed VR. These promising titles, plus the 5 we’ve just mentioned, show that VR gaming is as strong as ever, and it’s only getting better. How about you? What’s on your list of best VR games this year? Which ones are you looking forward to? Let us know below!

Sniper Elite VR Review

What makes a fictional story exceed its scope and become something more? It’s the same quality that makes a video game rise above its kin. Verisimilitude. The ring of truth. Or, if you prefer, authenticity. Or better yet, feeling real. Sniper Elite VR has that vibe. And because of it, this single player game pulls you in. This is no small feat. Especially since the game does not impress out of the gate.

Content Creator juggernaut Rebellion Developments is well known in the gamer community for their Sniper Elite and Zombie Army series plus so much more. They are most famously known for their unique X-Ray Kill Cam which follows the trajectory of a bullet not only from gun to a target but into the target. Upon bullet entry, an X-Ray view of the victim explodes with bloody, bone-shattering, organ destroying, visceral glory. It has become Rebellion’s signature mark. For the PSVR version of the game, Rebellion enlisted game developer J.A.W. – Just Add Water. Sniper Elite VR is the result of this collaboration and it bears all the earmarks of the Sniper Elite series, including the previously mentioned X-Ray Kill Cam.

This version of the game takes place during World War 2 in Southern Italy in 1943. You play as an Italian Resistance Fighter valued for your sniping skills. The game invokes memories of the early Medal of Honor games. Your mission is to drive back the Nazis until the Allied Forces can come to you and your comrades aid.

Good ‘Ol Missions

There are only two types of missions. One where you play as a sniper and stay stationary in one or two locations. The other type is stealth based, where you infiltrate an enemy base and move through it trying to remain noticed. Upon reading this, you are probably thinking – only two mission types? How can this game be any good? But it is good because of several factors. The first is level design. These are some of the best levels you will encounter in a game. They are split between village settings and enemy bases.

Next are the mission objectives. Some require you to be defensive while for others you must go on the offensive. Within each of these styles, there are several ways to approach each mission. You can be stealthy and stay on the periphery or you can get down and dirty, putting away your rifle and using machine guns, pistols, grenades, rocket launchers and other melee weapons. Another flavor that changes your approach are the customizable weapon loadouts you can create. To help you decide which weapons you favor, there is a practice range to try out all the available weapons too.

sniper elite vr top

There 18 missions in total. This adds up to between 10-15 hours of game play. Each mission has a set of objectives you must complete. Fortunately, there are checkpoints to save your progress. As mentioned earlier, the game doesn’t make the best first impression, as it throws you into a mission with no preparation. Your initial mission is to protect your village, but the level is short. You’re likely to start worrying that this is going to be another one of those VR experiences that are done in an hour rather than a true game. No need to worry. Later missions are much longer and this is indeed a full game.

With the first mission finished, you are sent to the rebel hideout, which doubles as a practice range. It’s here that you get the first opportunity to try out the various weapons. And you get to fine tune your marksman skills using the scope.

The Sniper shooting mechanic is fantastic. Using the scope is seamless. You simply bring the scope up to your eye like in real life. There is no cutting away or screen reloading. To improve your aim, the game uses the L2 trigger to simulate holding your breath as you zoom in on your target. You have a limited window of opportunity to draw a bead on your target. Wait too long and you lose focus, making it harder, if not impossible, to take a shot.

Controller Type Affects Immersion

I mentioned earlier that aiming is spot on – be it with scope or pistol iron sight. The PSVR version of the game support all three controllers. I rank them below in increasing order of immersion: 1) DualShock, 2) Moves, and 3) Aim Controller. While all three work well within the game, there is no contest as to which controller is the best. The Aim controller is made for this game. A DualShock works well but, it feels like what it is, a controller. The Moves have the advantage of allowing you to dual wield machine guns and pistols.

Within each class of weapons, there is an excellent variety that corresponds to the time period. Each has their own characteristics which make them feel unique. All of them sound great. Another useful attack is firing upon explosive containers like gas cans etc. to take out multiple enemies. These items show up in the levels highlighted in red.

To add to the replayability, there are leaderboards for not only the missions but the practice range too. There are also collectibles to entice thorough exploration of each level. For stealth missions, there’s the bonus of completing them without being spotted by anyone.

sniper elite vr mid

The game comes replete with options which allow full customization to your liking as well. On the VR side of things, you can dial in the amount of immersion desired. So you choose teleport versus free movement. On the gameplay side, you can choose to make the game as realistic as you desire. So you can choose between easy, normal, or realistic difficulty. You can turn autoload off. There are options to turn off the hud or dial down how much info to display. The game does not forget about left handed players either. They can swap the controls. You can also choose the frequency at which the X-Ray Kill Cam displays your kill shots.

This is a fantastic use of VR. And excellent use of the Aim Controller. The level of immersion provided by this peripheral is unparalleled. So much so that if there was a tripod attachment for the Aim, I would buy it. Just so I can truly feel like a sniper setting up the shots. Sniper Elite VR is the complete package. It’s got great gameplay, excellently designed levels, and the best scope use of any game to date. While the game may have some graphical blemishes, Rebellion has stated that a day one game patch will be available to address them plus other items.

A Spooky Scary Walk in the Woods

The Blair Witch is back and spookier than ever in Blair Witch: Oculus Rift Edition, an enhanced and updated version of the Blair Witch VR game. This version promises better models, improved lighting, further draw distance, a backpack, and improved AI for your trusty canine companion, Bullet, who is a good dog and would never jumpscare you. Right, Bullet?

In this game, players take on the role of Ellis, a former cop with a dark past, as he ventures out into the foreboding Black Hills Forest near Burkittsville, Maryland. He’s looking for a missing boy, but what he finds is something far worse. Take a look at this ominous trailer for a glimpse at the game’s eerie environments and smothering atmosphere.

Key features to this version include:

Improved Dog commands for Bullet:

  • Pet Bullet to make sure he knows he’s a good boy
  • Change up his look with a variety of new collars
  • Give Bullet treats. In the VR edition, he’ll take them right from your hand
  • Bullet can help you track scents through the forest, just give him an object to sniff
  • Enjoy the company of your best buddy and shake his paw any time

Gameplay:

  • Environments have been redesigned for more interactivity
    • Objects to catch, throw, or stack on top of each other
    • A marker to draw on paper and other objects
    • Drawers, doors, gates, and car trunk open at a touch
    • Breaking branches
    • Operation of mechanical elements: handles, buttons, opening locks with a key, padlock codes, etc…
  • New control system
  • New sounds and in-game events to surprise and scare the player.
  • Additional creature encounters

The ability to pet Bullet alone makes for a very tempting VR experience, but even beyond that, Blair Witch has gotten an incredibly well-received VR upgrade. If you haven’t already had a chance to check this title out, now is a great time to do it. The forest is waiting.

Ragnarock VR Hits Steam Next Week

Today we learned that French independent studio WanadevStudio confirmed the release of Ragnarock VR on July 15 on Steam.

Ragnarock is a single-player / multiplayer VR rhythm game in which players take on the role of Viking captains competing against each other in a frenzied longship race. Equipped with their hammers, they must strike the runes in rhythm on a music ranging from Celtic rock to power metal, in order to advance to the finish line.

Players sail to Viking lands in a fun and stylized art direction inspired by Norse mythology. Only the most experienced Vikings will be able to collect all the gold medals, beat the best scores, achieve unparalleled combos and put their name on the leaderboard.

Challenge yourself in frenzied real-time races for up to 6 players thanks to the PvP multiplayer mode.

The cross-play functionality promises intense games between players of different platforms. In solo mode, the most competitive players will be able to race against ghost ships.

According to the press release, “early access allowed the studio to develop the game taking into account the community’s feedback. It is through regular updates (Alfheim Update, Nidavellir Update, Asgard Update …) that the studio has committed to evolving the game with regular additions of music, features, and environments. The release of the title is therefore accompanied by a multitude of additional musical content, additional environments and new features, which will continue to be enriched over time.”

It’s a Multiplayer Survival Sim! In VR!

We’ve been getting a glut of survival sim games over the last few years. Which honestly rules. Bring on the glut! Creating an island of safety in the middle of a hellish world is a sensation I recommend to more or less everyone on earth. A Township Tale is bringing that experience to the Oculus, complete with the essential multiplayer element. In fact, pre-orders are open right now! Curious players won’t have to wait long before the game is properly released. For more details, you can check out the press release just below.

A Township Tale, the fantasy online multiplayer VR RPG coming to Oculus Quest on Thursday, July 15, is now available for pre-order for $9.99 USD. Pre-order benefits include access to the game before the launch date, as well as in-game items that can be used across various VR platforms.

A Township Tale

“Launching on Quest gives a new way for fans around the world to band together and face the challenges of the magical, medieval VR world of A Township Tale,” said Boramy Unn, game director, Alta.  “Since revealing A Township Tale for Quest and Quest 2 earlier this month, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. We created this pre-order program to provide even more reason for new and current players to jump right in and connect with friends in the immersive way that is only possible on VR.”

Fans who pre-order A Township Tale for Quest and Quest 2 beginning today will receive pre-order bonuses that include:

  • Base game which includes a personal server and 1,000 Talems (in-game currency)
  • Early access to the game starting Tuesday, July 13
  • An exclusive outfit, toolbelt and an additional 1,000 Talems (for a total of 2,000 Talems)
    • The in-game items are cross-platform meaning they can be shared between Oculus and PC VR platforms
    • Players can receive these cosmetic items immediately by logging into their Alta account on Quest platforms

The Quest and Quest 2 versions of A Township Tale were revealed earlier this month in the coveted final slot of the UploadVR E3 showcase.

At launch, Oculus Quest and Quest 2 players will be able to buy the game and receive their own server with 1,000 Talems to purchase additional cosmetic items for their characters.

From Australian indie developer Alta VR, A Township Tale is a dream-come-true for fans of RPGs and survival games, set in a medieval fantasy world where players band together with up to eight friends on a virtual server to take on professions and craft equipment while they explore the dangerous world before them.

A Township Tale allows players to become master professionals in their new town by taking up the mantle of blacksmiths, woodcutters, miners, archers and warriors. Players can explore dangerous areas and recover crafting materials to improve their gear. With specialized weapons, levelling abilities and playstyles, unique parties are formed to delve into the deepest reaches of dark caverns.

Key A Township Tale Features

  • Physical Crafting Professions – Operate physical tools and stations, maximizing the spatial range of VR controls.
  • Levelling – Level up in specialized professions to unlock abilities in crafting and combat.
  • Online Multiplayer – Join with others on the adventure and level up different skills to form a unique party.
  • Personal Server – Oculus Quest players can start their own cloud-hosted server with an eight concurrent player limit.  (NOTE: PC and Quest will not yet feature cross-play at launch.)

Bullseye

It’s been a little while since we last heard about the upcoming virtual reality installment in the Sniper Elite series. First announced alongside the Nintendo Switch port of Sniper Elite 4, all has been quiet on the Sniper Elite VR for the past few months. Publisher/developer Rebellion Developments haven’t given us much more information on the World War 2 shooter since then – until today.

Sniper Elite VR

In Sniper Elite VR you’ll play the part of an Italian Partisan, fighting against the fascist forces trying to take control of your homeland. Steve Bristow, the Assistant Head of Design at Rebellion Developments, outlined the team’s approach to bringing the series into VR by leaning on what he calls the ‘three pillars’ of Sniper Elite. The first of these pillars is the sniper itself – using as-of-yet unrevealed ‘clever tricks’ Rebellion claim to have developed a realistic gunplay experience. One detail of the gunplay that they detail is the use of PlayStation Move controllers to to manually reload your weapons, giving a physical feeling of carrying a Nazi-killing weapon.

Fans of the series will be glad to know that, despite not being feature in the reveal trailer, the second pillar of Sniper Elite VR is the iconic X-ray camera that follows your perfectly-placed bullets through your targets’ bodies. Again, not many detail were revealed about this – Bristow say that “Like a lot of things in VR, you’ll have to see it for yourself before you believe it.”. We do, however, get a brief look at what the modified X-ray cam will look like at the end of the release date trailer:

The final pillar is one that a lot of VR shooters have struggled with so far – free movement through the game’s arenas. In order to facilitate easy travel, there are a number of customizable movement options, including “free movement, single stick teleport and facing input and individual control over the position of inventory interact points and hand offsets”.

Sniper Elite VR will be released on PlayStation VR, Oculus and Steam VR on July 8th, 2021.

I’m Aftershocked

A bunch of VR news has popped up in the last couple of days. The Oculus Gaming Showcase has shown off some pretty interesting games, including a deeper look at the newly announced Resident Evil 4 VR game. While there was a lot of news and announcement for upcoming games, we also got a look at new content The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners. A short gameplay trailer for the Aftershocks update was revealed with rather… explosive revelations. This will be a free content update released on all platforms next month.

Saints and Sinners Aftershocks

The trailer for Aftershocks shows an extension to the game’s story, taking place after the main events. In Aftershocks, the player gets word of Reserve supplies being dropped. There is also a new cultish group of mask-wearing human enemies called The Reclaimed that players will encounter. We see explosive devices getting a lot of use throughout the trailer, so you can bet that this will be a popular means of combat in the new update. There are traps like propane tanks and throwable impact grenades that send humans and walkers flying through the air.

It has been almost a year since the Meatgrinder update for Saints and Sinners, so after this, we will have to wonder when the next update will be, if there will be one. The Aftershocks update will be coming to Oculus, Steam VR, PSVR, and Viveport on May 20th. The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners is available now for PSVR, Oculus Rift, Oculus Quest, Oculus Quest 2, Vive, and Steam VR.

Will you be trying out Aftershocks? Let us know in the comments below.

Shaw Tree Spree Challenge Dares Gamers to Plant Trees For Earth Day https://cogconnected.com/2021/04/shaw-tree-spree-challenge/ https://cogconnected.com/2021/04/shaw-tree-spree-challenge/#respond Thu, 22 Apr 2021 10:43:17 +0000 https://cogconnected.com/?p=271508 Shaw has a challenge for gamers everywhere: how many trees can you plant in a video game of your choice? Send pics and they'll match it by planting real trees.

For Every Tree You Plant In-Game, Shaw Will Plant One IRL

Earth Day is coming up, but how are you supposed to celebrate when we’re all supposed to stay indoors? The pandemic means that large gatherings outside are frowned upon, if not outright banned, and that means the big tree-planting efforts are hard to participate in. Though let’s be honest, most of us gamers were just going to donate money from the safety of our own homes anyway. Whatever the case, Shaw chose the perfect time to unveil a new Earth Day initiative: the Tree Spree Challenge. All you have to do is plant a tree in a game of your choice, screenshot it, and post the pic on social media with #ShawTreeSpree, and the internet giant will match it with a real tree.

Shaw Tree Spree screenshot

Gamers, this is our moment! If you’ve ever wanted to give back to the planet, prove that you’re better at planting trees than anyone else, or just an excuse to decorate your Animal Crossing island, Minecraft homes, or Stardew Valley farmsteads, now is the time to do it. Flood Twitter with the evidence. Let’s get as many trees out there as possible. Last time, the challenge ended with a total of 4,000 trees, but we think you guys can leave that number in the dust.

The event’s call to action states that: “People can post a screenshot of their in-game tree on social using the hashtag #ShawTreeSpree, and Shaw will plant a tree in real life for them, too. The initiative will run until the end of Earth Month(April 30th) and is open to any game where you can plant a tree.”

How many games can you plant trees in, we wonder? Now is an excellent time to find out.

The Shaw Tree Spree Challenge will run from April 22nd (Earth Day) to April 30th, 2021.

How many trees did you plant? Let us know down in the comments, or hit us up on Twitter or Facebook.

Immersive Sci-fi Horror Cosmodread Coming to VR https://cogconnected.com/2021/02/immersive-horror-cosmodread-vr/ https://cogconnected.com/2021/02/immersive-horror-cosmodread-vr/#respond Thu, 18 Feb 2021 19:31:14 +0000 https://cogconnected.com/?p=266868 The VR Roguelike drops in March and charges you with surviving a spaceship being attacked by mysterious forces. In space, nobody can hear you scream.

Where We’re Going, You Don’t Need Screens to See

VR, according to my ex, is the future of gaming. Sure, I can see the point; outside of the heightened immersion offered by a VR headset there are the practical implications of not needing a second screen if space is at a premium, but VR is still in the early days where it’s mostly seen as a gimmick. Sure, there are some brilliant VR games, or games that thrive in VR (particularly first-person horror games like Resident Evil 7 or Alien Isolation), but most people still haven’t jumped on board. Could Cosmodread change that? Well, let’s wait and see.

Cosmodread is a roguelike survival horror, putting you on a spacecraft which, surprise surprise, is under attack by… something. Details are scarce, but considering flesh seems to be spreading along the walls like moss in some sections, I doubt it’s some friendly alien who really, really likes salad. The game’s leaning into the immersion offered by VR, requiring you to physically reach out and open doors or cabinets, whether it’s to advance or find vital components to craft items or weapons.

There’s also some nifty shout outs to some horror classics, including an orb enclosed in rings which is an obvious reference to the gravity drive in Event Horizon – one of the most disturbing horror movies of all time which, although it wasn’t a big success when it launched, became a cult hit. Could we be seeing a similar concept? Probably not – Event Horizon already shares a lot with Warhammer 40k, so they may be going in a different direction – but the game looks like a creepy, gruesome experience that horror fans will do well to keep their eyes on.

The game drops on March 25th for Oculus Quest and Rift (With cross-buy), and Steam for the HTC Vive, Valve Index, and Windows Mixed Reality Headsets.

What do you think of Cosmodread? Let us know in the comments, on Twitter, or on Facebook.

Mask Yourself Wisely

We’ve talked about this game before briefly as part of the Day of the Dev Puzzle Game Showcase, but this is our first time talking about Maskmaker specifically. Which is a real shame, because it definitely deserves its very own article. Maskmaker transports you to a VR fantasy realm, where you become the apprentice to its ‘leader’ Prospero. Players learn to craft increasingly complex magical masks, explore the world to gather rare resources, and transport themselves to different realms and possess various guardians using the masks. Sounds like quite the magical trip. If you’ve ever been curious about what the Happy Mask Salesman’s deal might be, you should check this game out.

“Our team set out to create a non-linear adventure that gives players a strong sense of presence as they explore the mysterious universe of Maskmaker,” said Balthazar Auxietre, creative director and co-founder of InnerspaceVR. “We carefully designed the game to help players feel like a real craftsman when creating these intricate masks, and experience the freedom and discovery as they traverse through unique worlds to uncover the secrets of the mask realm.”

In other words, you can expect lots of time to explore the setting and work on mastering the crafting mechanics. Wander across bridges, over snow, and through mountains without ever leaving your workshop. The power of the masks will open the world to you, so you must use them to solve the mystery of Prospero. The press release puts it like this: “Players will need to explore each world to collect rare resources, solve puzzles and develop their crafting skills to prove they are worthy of being a Maskmaker. From mask-to-mask and puzzle-to-puzzle, players will make their way through the mask realm to seek Prospero and ultimately unravel the truth behind this identity.”

If that sounds like a good time and VR doesn’t make you ill, add Maskmaker to your wishlist.

Maskmaker will be available April 20, 2021 on Oculus Rift S, Quest (via Link cable only), PlayStation VR, HTC Vive, and PC VR via SteamVR.

What’s your favorite mask? Let us know down in the comments, or hit us up on Twitter or Facebook.
