From Legendary Edition Closure to New Ventures: Walters Opens Up About His Departure and Fresh Beginnings

Mac Walters, the former lead writer of the iconic Mass Effect series, recently shared insights into his decision to part ways with BioWare after an illustrious 19-year tenure. In a candid conversation with MinnMax, Walters shed light on various factors that influenced his departure, ranging from a sense of fulfillment with the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition to the desire for a fresh start and the opportunity to work in a smaller team setting once again.

The Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, a compilation of the original trilogy presented in one collection for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, played a significant role in Walters’ decision to move on. The unexpected nature of the project, which was not part of the long-term planning typical for games, allowed Walters to adopt a more entrepreneurial approach. This unconventional process reminded him of BioWare’s early days—a time characterized by a small, scrappy team wearing multiple hats, akin to the camaraderie of the “good old days.”

Mass Effect: Legendary Edition

As the lead writer for Mass Effect 2 and 3, Walters found a sense of closure with the Legendary Edition. The project’s success, both critically and financially, provided a satisfying conclusion to his journey with Mass Effect. Walters expressed that the experience felt like the “bow on all the things I’ve done with Mass Effect,” leading him to decide against further involvement in the series, stating, “I don’t want to do any more Mass Effect after this. Why tempt fate?”

With a desire to explore new creative horizons and BioWare already committed to projects like Mass Effect 5 and Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, Walters founded his own studio—Worlds Untold. This new venture, backed by Chinese game firm NetEase and based in Vancouver, Canada, aims to develop “triple-A action adventure games with an emphasis on narrative and worldbuilding.” Walters’ departure from BioWare marks not just an end to an era but the beginning of an exciting chapter in his career, as he ventures into uncharted territory with Worlds Untold.

Atlus Celebrates the Remarkable Achievement and Teases Future Endeavors in the Persona Universe

In a testament to its enduring popularity, the Persona 5 subseries has achieved a significant milestone, crossing the 10 million units sold mark. This achievement comes on the heels of the latest addition, Persona 5 Tactica, which was launched in November 2023. Publisher Atlus expressed gratitude to the dedicated fanbase and commemorated the occasion with a special illustration from series artist Shigenori Soejima, featuring the iconic Persona 5 characters, Joker and Morgana.

The 10 million units specifically refer to the Persona 5 series, encompassing the main entry and its various spin-offs. Notably, this count excludes other Persona titles such as Persona 3 and Persona 4 Golden. The Persona 5 series has witnessed the release of four spin-offs, including Dancing in the Starlight, Royal, Strikers, and the recently launched Tactica.

While precise sales figures for Persona 5 Tactica remain confidential, the game’s release in November is widely acknowledged as a crucial contributor to the series surpassing the significant milestone of 10 million units sold. Persona 5 Tactica, distinguished by its innovative grid-based battle system, represents a notable addition to the Persona 5 subseries, showcasing Atlus’ commitment to exploring diverse gameplay mechanics within the Persona universe.

Persona 5 Tactica feature

Persona 5 Tactica introduces a unique blend of strategy and role-playing elements with its grid-based battle system. The game offers players a tactical approach to engagements, a departure from the traditional turn-based combat seen in other entries. This innovative gameplay mechanic not only adds a layer of complexity to the Persona experience but also caters to a broader audience by incorporating diverse gaming styles.

Despite the absence of specific sales statistics, the critical acclaim garnered by Tactica, underscored by its favorable review scores, indicates that the game resonated positively with both existing fans and newcomers to the Persona series. The November release window likely contributed significantly to the overall success of the Persona 5 subseries, propelling it beyond the 10 million unit milestone.

Capitalizing on the series’ success, Atlus is set to release a remake of Persona 3 titled “Persona 3: Reload” on February 2, 2024. This ground-up remake promises a fresh experience with updated graphics, a new voice cast, and a meticulous recreation of Persona 3. As Atlus continues to shape the Persona universe, fans eagerly anticipate the immersive journeys and adventures that lie ahead.

The Last of Us Update Provided by Twitter Post Hinting at Ongoing Efforts on Troubled Project

The game director of Naughty Dog, Vinit Agarwal, has provided an update on the status of the highly anticipated but troubled The Last of Us multiplayer game. As reported by Eurogamer, Agarwal addressed the project in a recent tweet while initially discussing Super Mario Bros. Wonder. He wanted to clarify that he was still actively involved in the development of the game, providing some reassurance for fans eagerly awaiting its release.

Agarwal’s tweet stated, “So this tweet can live on in peace… yes, I’m still working on that game.” While he did not explicitly mention “The Last of Us” multiplayer, the context makes it clear that he was referring to this project.

This confirmation follows reports from six months ago that indicated the game had encountered significant setbacks during its development at Naughty Dog. Sony, leveraging the multiplayer expertise of its recently acquired studio, Bungie, conducted an analysis of Naughty Dog’s work. Ultimately, it was determined that the game would benefit from additional time and resources to achieve the desired quality and long-term viability.

The Last of Us PC

The decision to delay and reassess the project followed a Bloomberg report that had raised questions about the game’s quality and future prospects. The report suggested that only a small group of developers were actively working on it. Given the substantial time that had passed since Naughty Dog initially began working on the game, there was growing skepticism that it would ever be completed or released.

Agarwal’s recent tweet provides a glimmer of hope for those anticipating The Last of Us multiplayer, as it suggests ongoing efforts to bring the game to fruition. However, it’s essential to note that this message is not an official statement from Naughty Dog or Sony regarding the game’s future. Despite the game’s 10-year anniversary for the original PlayStation 3 version passing without substantial updates on its development, Agarwal’s message signifies continued dedication to the project.

Bosses Disturb Players In Other Genres Too

Video games have a way of getting under our skin and leaving us with unforgettable experiences. While horror games are known for their spine-chilling bosses, there are non-horror games that feature bosses that are equally, if not more, disturbing and unsettling. Here’s a list of the top 10 non-horror game bosses that have left players feeling thoroughly unnerved.

10. Vortex Queen (Ecco the Dolphin)

In the tranquil underwater world of Ecco the Dolphin, players are suddenly confronted with the enigmatic Vortex Queen. This ethereal creature is unsettling not just due to her otherworldly appearance but also because of her cryptic dialogue. As players descend into the deep sea depths to face her, a profound sense of isolation pervades the encounter. The vast, empty ocean amplifies the eerie ambiance, making this boss an unsettling, unforgettable challenge that defies the peaceful tone set by the rest of the game.

9. Flowey (Undertale)

Undertale is renowned for its quirky and humorous moments, but Flowey introduces a sinister element to the game. Flowey’s unsettling nature comes from his unpredictable behavior, which oscillates between friendliness and malevolence. This psychological rollercoaster keeps players on edge as they never quite know what to expect. His sudden shifts in personality create a deeply disturbing experience that lingers long after the encounter is over.

8. Clotho (God of War 2)

The “God of War series is celebrated for its epic battles, but Clotho, the personification of fate, adds a layer of psychological horror to the game. Her grotesque appearance, which embodies the decay and chaos that surrounds her, sets an eerie tone. What truly makes this boss memorable is the mind-bending reality players must navigate during the fight. The blend of physical combat and abstract, twisted environments makes Clotho an unforgettable nightmare.

7. Majora (Majora’s Mask)

The Legend of Zelda series is not typically associated with horror, but “Majora’s Mask” takes a departure from the norm. The eponymous antagonist, Majora, wears an eerie mask that is a source of constant unease throughout the fight. As the transformation of Majora unfolds, players are left with a haunting sense of dread. The dark undertones and surreal experience create an unsettling encounter that stands out within the series.

6. Matt Helms (No More Heroes 2)

No More Heroes thrives on its eccentricity, and the boss fight against Matt Helms embodies this to the extreme. Matt, a bizarre, supernatural, satanic, muscle-bound boss, sets the whole stage ablaze as the fight progresses, further intensifying the surreal atmosphere. This fight is not only strange but deeply disturbing, staying with players due to its bizarre presentation and unsettling aesthetics.

5. Nihilanth (Half-Life)

Half-Life is known for its groundbreaking first-person shooter gameplay, but the final boss, Nihilanth, is more than just a climactic gunfight. The eerie alien environment, coupled with cryptic communication and a profound sense of isolation, make this encounter unforgettable. Players are left in a state of disorientation as they navigate this otherworldly battlefield, adding a haunting dimension to this iconic showdown.

4. Pandora (Persona)

The Persona series is renowned for its psychological elements, and Pandora in the first game exemplifies this theme. Pandora’s unnerving appearance and cryptic dialogue create an unsettling atmosphere in the game. The encounter with Pandora is not just a boss battle; it’s a glimpse into the darker, psychological underpinnings of the “Persona” universe, leaving players with an eerie impression that lingers.

3. Giygas (Earthbound)

Giygas is often regarded as one of the most disturbing video game bosses of all time. His abstract, nightmarish design and incomprehensible, chaotic dialogue create a deeply unsettling encounter. Giygas is a true embodiment of existential dread, leaving players with a sense of unease that few other bosses can replicate.

2. SA-X (Metroid Fusion)

The SA-X in Metroid Fusion is an embodiment of fear for protagonist Samus Aran. It’s her own suit, turned against her, creating a relentless and silent pursuit. The sense of vulnerability intensifies throughout the encounter, making it a boss fight that’s both terrifying and thrilling. The SA-X represents a personal horror for Samus, and players share in her unease as they confront this menacing entity.

1. Scarecrow (Batman: Arkham Asylum)

Batman: Arkham Asylum might not be a horror game, but the sections featuring Scarecrow take players on a psychological rollercoaster. The fear toxin-induced hallucinations, combined with the eerie atmosphere, make this boss fight one of the most unsettling in gaming history. The player’s own fears and insecurities become a central part of the battle, leaving them with a deep sense of unease that transcends the traditional action game experience.

Disney Might Buy a Big Publisher

Disney executives are reportedly urging CEO Bob Iger to contemplate a significant transformation of Disney from merely a “gaming license” holder into a formidable “gaming giant.”

According to a report released by Bloomberg (as reported by VGC), there appears to be unrest within the House of Mouse. This disquiet follows remarks made before the SAG-Aftra strike and a series of box office disappointments. In response, some higher-ups are advocating for a strategic shift towards video games as a means to regain solid footing in the entertainment industry.

Notably, the names of prominent publishers, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft, have emerged as potential partners. Both companies have recent experience managing various Disney intellectual properties. However, Bob Iger, who currently serves in his second term as CEO after resuming the position in November 2022, reportedly hasn’t firmly committed to this proposed direction.

The company’s portfolio already features a range of video games bearing the Disney brand, including titles like Disney Illusion Island, Disney Dreamlight Valley, Disney Speedstorm, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Additionally, there are upcoming releases such as Iron Man, Black Panther, and Star Wars Outlaws, although none of these are slated for the Nintendo Switch. EA is responsible for Jedi: Survivor, Iron Man, and Black Panther, while Ubisoft is handling Outlaws.

It’s crucial to acknowledge that these discussions and considerations remain in the realm of reports and speculations, with no official confirmation from Disney at this stage. The next few months will likely unveil the House of Mouse’s strategic moves.

Bob Iger’s initial tenure as Disney’s head spanned from 2005 to 2020, marked by significant acquisitions like Pixar, Marvel Entertainment, Lucasfilm, and 21st Century Fox. His return to the role in 2022, following a turbulent period under the leadership of former parks head Bob Chapek, suggests a continued quest for innovation and growth.

As the gaming landscape continues to evolve, the next Disney-affiliated video game on the horizon is the remastered version of the Sega Genesis platformer “Gargoyles,” scheduled for release on October 19, 2023, offering a glimpse into Disney’s evolving strategies in the gaming industry.

The October Games for PlayStation Plus Extra Have Been Leaked

The anticipation for October’s PlayStation Plus Extra Game Catalogue has been high. However, thanks to a leak from the trusted insider, Billbil-kun we now have some high expectations. Unlike the Essential games available to all subscribers, these downloadable PS4 and PS5 gems are exclusive to PS Plus Extra and Premium tier members.

This October, gamers are in for a treat with headline additions like Gotham Knights, The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes, Disco Elysium The Final Cut, and Far: Changing Tides. And that’s not all, the leak also spills the beans on other exciting titles making their way to the PlayStation Plus Game Catalogue. These include Gungrave GORE, Elite Dangerous, Dead Island Definitive Edition, and Alien Isolation.

PlayStation Plus

But it doesn’t stop there. PlayStation Plus Premium also caters to nostalgia, offering a selection of PS1, PS2, and PSP games for download, along with PS3 games via cloud streaming. The Classics Catalogue in September boasted titles like Star Ocean First Departure R, Star Ocean: Till the End of Time, Star Ocean: The Last Hope – 4K & FHD Remaster, and Dragon’s Crown Pro.

One note of caution for PlayStation Plus subscribers: Sony recently raised subscription prices, with a 35% increase for 12-month plans in the Essential, Extra, and Premium tiers. So, while the games keep getting better, it’s wise to keep an eye on your wallet.

The CEO of PlayStation Jim Ryan Has Announced He Is Retiring in March 2024

PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan, a stalwart in the gaming industry for three decades, is bidding farewell. Sony recently revealed that Ryan will retire in March 2024, marking the end of his illustrious career. In his stead, Hiroki Totoki will step up as Chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment in October 2023, before officially taking on the role of interim CEO on April 1, 2024.

Ryan shared his sentiments about his departure, saying, “After 30 years, I have decided to retire from SIE in March 2024. I’ve cherished the opportunity to work in a remarkable company with great colleagues and partners.”

Totoki expressed his gratitude, praising Ryan’s exceptional contributions, especially in the launch of the PlayStation 5. Ryan’s legacy isn’t just limited to console launches. He recently made headlines by opposing Microsoft’s bid to acquire Activision Blizzard. Jim was seen voicing concerns about the potential exclusivity of Call of Duty. He championed competition in the gaming sphere.

Moreover, Ryan’s tenure witnessed Sony’s dominance with the PS4 and the subsequent introduction of the PS5. He responded to fan backlash by reversing the decision to close the PS3 and PS Vita digital storefronts and spearheaded an initiative focused on games as services.

In addition, Ryan played a pivotal role in Sony’s strategic acquisitions, including Insomniac Games, Bungie, and Housemarque. His departure signifies the end of an era in the gaming world, leaving gamers with a legacy of memorable achievements and industry-shaping decisions.

Bring ‘Em Back Sony!

Sony regularly smashes it out of the park with its exclusives. Franchises like Uncharted and God of War have had a number of sequels on a range of platforms and are rightfully considered pillars of the company. While many of the Japanese giant’s IPs have gone from strength to strength, there are plenty that has been left by the wayside. So, join me as I look at forgotten titles that Sony should revive for the PlayStation 5.

Syphon Filter

Absent since 2007, Syphon Filter is long overdue for a return to consoles. The stealth action adventure saw you take on the role of Gabe Logan, a special agent, who could take down enemies in a slick and stylish manner. Although the genre exploded in the late 90s/early 2000s, there’s currently a gap in the market for a sneaky hero. Reports emerged that Sony approached Bend Studios about a possible reboot but unfortunately, that didn’t come to fruition. However, the fact that they are exploring the possibility suggests that there is still hope that the title will creep back onto the PlayStation in the near future.

Jak and Daxter

It’s an absolute disgrace that Jak and Daxter’s last game was in 2009. Granted, there was a time when every other game released was a 3D platformer, but now, there’s a serious lack of representation of the genre. Comebacks are all the rage, Crash is back on top, heck, even lower-tier characters like Kao the Kangeroo are releasing fun, platform adventures. So, why haven’t we had a game featuring the dynamic duo? Well, one reason is that Naughty Dog has been focusing on creating masterpieces, however, Sony could easily get a different developer to work on a new Jak and Daxter game. Please, make it happen!

Infamous

Superhero movies may have lost their lustre but games featuring comic book icons are at an all-time high. Insomniac’s Spider-Man was a revelation, however, other attempts have yet to reach the same heights. With RockSteady’s Suicide Squad on the way, it makes sense for Sony to re-introduce Cole McGrath and crew. While not based on a comic, the game drew inspiration from the panels. The special powers, open world and strong story combined to offer a great experience that many loved. Dormant since 2014, it’s time for a heroic comeback.

The Order: 1886

Okay, hear me out. Although The Order: 1886 was panned, there were glimmers of greatness within the brief escapade. Not only was it a visual showcase, but the premise and atmosphere were incredible. Roaming around a 19th-century, steampunk-inspired London in search of werewolves was pretty cool. Mechanically the game was tight but mission variety lacked imagination making it quite repetitive. While the game clearly had issues, there’s definitely potential in the idea and I for one would love to see a sequel.

Sly Cooper

Out of Sony’s platformers, Sly Cooper was my favorite. Stealth and platforming merged to create a truly fascinating game that was packed with character. Bentley and Murray not only helped improve the dynamics of the group but they also had unique stages that varied the gameplay. Even though 2013 saw a return of the thief, it wasn’t enough to spark new interest in the franchise. As there has been a resurgence in the genre, surely there’s space for a new adventure featuring the furry mammal?

PaRappa the Rapper

PaRappa the Rapper is iconic with PlayStation, yet they don’t capitalize on the property. Full of personality, the game resonated with audiences due to its sheer goofiness. So, why haven’t we had another game with the rapping pooch? Well, the genre took an almighty decline after players got tired of Guitar Hero-style titles, but now the genre has found a new home: VR. With titles like Beat Saber making waves on the platform, Sony should develop a VR PaRappa the Rapper game to boost interest in the PSVR 2.

Heavenly Sword

Ninja Theory is one of the most underrated developers. DmC: Devil May Cry, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice are modern classics. While they have started to receive their deserved acclaim, Heavenly Sword is still overlooked. Nariko was a wonderful protagonist and Andy Serkis was incredible as the antagonist. The game did have some shoehorned Sixaxis sections, however, the addictive, flashy combat and unique world felt like the beginning of a new franchise. Will we ever see something new in the universe? Probably not, but we can always hope.

Gravity Rush

Originally released on the PS Vita, this game was so good that Sony remastered it for home consoles. The game follows Kat, a young female who can shift gravity. This leads to some incredible gameplay opportunities that made this arguably the best game on the portable device. Unfortunately, the sequel lacked the same originality and vision, however, there is still something in the concept, it just needs another chance.

Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale

There are plenty of Smash Bros. clones but this is the best of the bunch. Icons battling against each other sounds like a great idea but Sony played it a little too safe staying too close to their influences. Even with that in mind, the game had some great elements. The addition of a combo system anchored the game as a fighter and the leveled specials added variety to fights. Releasing a sequel that builds on the foundations of the original and takes the title in a new direction could reignite interest in the fighter.

Killzone

Some shooters feel big and bulky in a great way. Gears of War captures that notion perfectly. The weight of the armor and weapons makes each kill satisfying. While Killzone never reached the same heights, it carries the same ethos. Guerilla Games have moved on to great things with the Horizon series but there is a gap in the market for a first-person shooter of this ilk. Will we ever see the series back on modern consoles? I think so.

Well, that’s my list of classic games that Sony should revive. Do you agree with my picks? Are there any on there that you think should stay locked in the vault? Which games would you add? Privateer Turned Pirate Turned Assassin

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is considered to be the pinnacle of the AC series. It came out at the height of Assassin’s Creed popularity, refined the gameplay, and captured the exact right setting that fans wanted at the time. While the series has forward to new games, Ubisoft is returning to Black Flag one more time.

In a slew of gaming announcements today from Ubisoft, they also announced Assassin’s Creed: Forgotten Temple. This limited series will be a digital comic made by Webtoon and serve as a sequel to Black Flag, taking place immediately after the base game ends.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

When we last left Edward Kenway, at the end of Assassin’s Creed IV, he had just sailed off with his young daughter after securing the Observatory for the Assassins. Later, he returned to London, married, and had a son named Haytham, who would go on to join the Templar Order. Before Haytham turned, Edward became a Master Assassin of the British Brotherhood. He was killed by Templar mercenaries.

Forgotten Temple takes place after Edward returns to London and joins the Brotherhood. In this series, he will travel the seas of Southeast Asia in search of other Pieces of Eden. In the present day, a Korean descendant of Edward Kenway named Noa Kim researches his Assassin heritage.

The first five installments of the series will be released exclusively on Webtoon on April 24th. Following that date, a new episode will be released every week. There are three seasons planned for this series.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is available on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, and Nintendo Switch.

I Love an Easter Egg Hunt!

It’s that time of year again when we overindulge in chocolate eggs and scour the wardrobes for elasticated pants. In order to celebrate the occasion, I’ve decided to look at a different kind of Easter Egg in the medium we love the most. So join me as I explore the most delicious secrets that developers burrow within their games.

Spoilers Ahead

Metal Gear Solid 3

One of my absolute favorite games is Metal Gear Solid 3 and this includes a gem of an Easter Egg. The End is the oldest of The Cobra Unit, however, he is an incredible sniper. When you begin your confrontation with the master, if you save the game and return a week later (or simply change the date), The End dies of old age! In addition to this, there is an early opportunity to rid the world of the character. When you first see him, you can take a shot and assassinate him before these events even take place. It’s clever and very Kojima!

Metal Gear Solid 5

While I could easily write a list that consisted simply of Kojima games, I’m not going to do that. However, the Easter Egg in Metal Gear Solid 5 definitely deserves a shout. Yes, I could mention the nods to 80s pop culture, the fact that Kojima himself is in it, or even the nuclear disarmament but sometimes the subtle ones are the best. As you progress through the story, you realize that Snake doesn’t seem the same. His attitude and his morals seem skewed. Fans around the world were shocked to learn that you were actually playing as a different person who had undergone surgery to look like Snake, however, this was foreshadowed throughout. As you sit in the chopper and select your missions, at certain points in the day you can see your reflection and you guessed it, in the window is your true identity!

Dead Rising

Capcom’s Dead Rising is a fun and playful take on the zombie genre. You can use all manner of silly weapons to slice up enemies as you try to survive in an infested mall. Throughout, you’ll notice a range of shops that you can visit for items and one is a lovely nod to the Resident Evil series. An eatery is called Jill’s Sandwiches after the iconic line from the first game. The little reference keeps with the humorous nature of the game while paying homage to the most famous zombie game.

Dead Space

As Isaac, your main goal is to find your wife, Nicole, and get off the USG Ishimura. As missions progress, there are hints that your mental state is deteriorating. Although the twist cements the notion, the game spells it out for you through the title of each chapter. Read only the first letter of missions and it spells out ‘Nicole is Dead’. A haunting but fitting way to foreshadow the conclusion.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

GTA is full of secrets. Rockstar has placed a ton of hidden treats throughout their rich world which constantly reward exploration. Parodying is part and parcel of the developer’s ethos and their mockery of the actual Easter egg is one of its greats. If you go to the roof of a building near the VCN, you can jump through to enter a room that literally has a large chocolate egg that sits on a pedestal.

God of War: Ragnarok

There are plenty of things to discover in Santa Monica’s epic but Kvasir’s poems are, in my opinion, the best. Throughout, you’ll discover several well-written poems which are about iconic titles released on the PlayStation. They are extremely well done and work within the game’s premise, however, astute fans will be able to make links to famous franchises which will make you want to find them all.

Mortal Kombat

Reptile is synonymous with the franchise, however, you had to jump through several hoops to unlock him. You need to achieve two flawless victories on the pit stage while not blocking for the entirety of the fight. You must also conclude the battle with a fatality when an object sails past the moon. This is no joke. Once all of the criteria have been met, you are then transported to the bottom of the pit to face the green ninja.

Arkham Asylum

Some Easter eggs are hard to find but the Warden’s room in Arkham Asylum was missed by everybody! Inside were hints about the future of the franchise, showing blueprints for the eventual sequel, Arkham City. Rocksteady was so eager for this to be discovered that they actually announced its existence in a podcast! This led to fans scurrying back to the game to see this glimpse into the future.

Donkey Kong Country 2

An overlooked classic is the incredible Donkey Kong Country 2. Not only did it refine its predecessor, but it also took the genre to new heights with its innovative level design. If you 100% the game, you will reach the top spot in Cranky’s Video Game Heroes and knock off Nintendo characters from the podium. While it’s nice to see Mario, Yoshi and Link in the game, the real treat is at the bottom right of the screen. Near the trash can is a sign that says ‘No Hopers’ and on the floor lay Sonic’s red trainers and Earthworm Jim’s gun. It’s rare for Nintendo to throw shade at other games but when they do, they don’t hold back!

Dead Island

Dead Island has gained cult status due to several reasons. Its luscious beach setting was a wonderful contrast to the visceral zombie action. Within the horrific world is Jason Voorhees. Yes, you read that right. While it isn’t the licensed version, the psychopath dwells in a small hut near a camp, wears a hockey mask and has a machete. A bunch of other references to the legendary Friday 13th franchise is also evident which makes this encounter one of the best Easter eggs.

Well, there you have it. Those are my favorite Easter eggs in video games. Are there any on the list that you’d swap for something else? Are there any on here that you didn’t know about? Improved Boulder-Punching

There’s so much excitement over Resident Evil these days. There is the RE 4 Remake coming up, plus the VR version of Resident Evil Village. The base game is still a banger as well. However, it seems that Resident Evil 5 is feeling left out, so a new update on Steam was pushed out.

This is the game where Capcom began to focus more on the action and gunplay of Resident Evil. It was also structured for co-op, something that was really only explored in 5 and 6. We don’t like to talk about RE 6 though.

Resident Evil 5

The new update doesn’t reinvent the wheel or anything, but it is an improvement nonetheless. For one, Games for Windows Live support has been removed, so players don’t have to deal with that anymore. The other big point is that Resident Evil 5 now supports split-screen on Steam. The co-op game finally feels like a co-op game.

Other than other minor bug fixes, there isn’t really anything else new with the game. Since Capcom has been busy remaking all the Resident Evil games, it will be interesting to see if Resident Evil 5 and 6 get the same treatment as the others.

Resident Evil 5 is available on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

Where does this game fall in your list of favorite RE games? Let us know in the comments below.

Minecraft’s Going Pink for Valentine’s Day!

Minecraft is approaching its 1.2.0 update, and Mojang has a surprise in store. They just revealed that the update will also come with a whole new biome, filled with cherry blossom trees!

This beautiful biome is filled with cherry blossom trees“, says Mojang, “that bring a unique look to the horizon as their crowns are big and flat, like fluffy pink clouds. It’s no wonder that three adorable mobs, pigs, sheep, and bees, are drawn to them and will spawn in this biome.

But of course, the highlight of a biome like this comes from that iconic color. Minecraft could really use more pink!

These beautiful new trees fill the horizon with a stunning shade of pink,” Mojang says. “Of course these new trees can also be broken down and crafted into a full wood-set, including the newly introduced hanging signs and cherry tree saplings to grow more of the lovely pink trees.

All the wood is a wonderful pink shade, because of course it is. You can read more about the update here, on Mojang’s official site. If you want images of just how pink everything is, that’s the place to go!

And obviously, new trees means new wood. New logs, planks, doors, trapdoors, the works. What sort of Minecraft creations will you be making with this new palette update? Got any special priorities? How are you feeling about the update as a whole, anything catch your eye? Let your voice be heard in the comments down below!

Still* Coming to Switch

Lara Croft is an iconic video game character, who chases down the truth buried in myths and legends. Now, she’s on a very meta adventure where her own Tomb Raider games are caught up in a mystery of a Nintendo Switch port.

The games in question are Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and its sequel the Temple of Osiris. They each came out in 2010 and 2014 respectively, for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. In 2021, these titles were announced to be coming to Nintendo Switch in 2022. Well, here we are on Christmas Eve and not a Tomb to be Raided.

Tomb Raider

News of these two Tomb Raider games had gone quiet until last week. Feral Interactive, publishers of the Nintendo Switch ports, are now aiming for a 2023 release date. Of course, with an entire year of possibilities, there is no telling exactly when Nintendo Switch owners will be playing these games.

These games are almost ten years old at this point. Gamers truly desperate to play them might as well find them on other platforms. Hopefully, Feral Interactive can convince them to wait just a little longer if they show how they run on Nintendo Switch.

Feral Interactive says that they will be able to share more information in 2023. For now, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is available on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. The Temple of Osiris is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Have you played these Tomb Raider games or are you waiting for the Switch ports? Let us know in the comments below.

Top 10 Video Games Set at Christmas

It’s that time of year again when classic forms of media resurface to get you in the holiday spirit. Although you may be able to quickly select your favorite song or play your most beloved movie, you may draw a blank when thinking about the best Christmas game. Well, I’ve scoured the exhaustive list that fits the bill and selected the finest titles that allow you to step into Christmas.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is, without a doubt, my favorite festive game. What’s more Christmas-y than swinging around a frosty New York with your friendly neighborhood web swinger? Its slick combat and fast-paced traversal in a decked-up Big Apple make this one of the best games set at Christmas.

Batman: Arkham Origins

The Arkham games managed to capture the many aspects that make the Dark Knight the greatest superhero of them all. While not the greatest in the franchise, Origins is unfairly overlooked. Its great boss battles, improved detective mechanics, and story make this a memorable time with the caped crusader. Set on Christmas Eve, the snow-covered Gotham is an excellent way to get you in the festive mood.

Bayonetta 2

Bayonetta 2 is one of the greatest action games to date, so what better reason to revisit the classic than to get you in the holiday spirit? While you may remember the over-the-top, ridiculous action set pieces more than the story, the game is actually set at Christmas. Seeing the witch herself purchasing presents and Rodin dressed as Santa is both bonkers and brilliant.

Tom Clancy’s The Division

After a virus decimates the population, the world is sent into chaos and anarchy reigns supreme. Doesn’t sound too Christmasy right? Well, this happens in the lead-up to the big day, so New York is covered in snow and decorated with lights. So you get that warm, fuzzy feeling as you pump enemies full of bullets.

Dead Rising 4

Dead Rising is good ol’ silly fun. Knocking down zombies with a bowling ball, using the undead as a boxing bag, and slicing up a horde with a massive samurai sword is the perfect way to relieve the stress of the holidays. Its iconic setting and crazy cast of characters make this a wonderful Christmas time.

Yakuza Kiwami

The Yakuza games are complex crime-thrillers that explore the underbelly of Japan, however, this is countered with ridiculous scenarios that make the game an absolute joy. Kiwami is set in December, so the streets of Kamurocho have a real festive feel. Decorations lace the area and there are several yuletide-themed presents hidden within.

Die Hard Trilogy

Many argue that Die Hard is the best Christmas film, well, they’re wrong because it’s Muppets’ Christmas Carol. Regardless of this, John McClain and his ass-kicking antics are now synonymous with the period and this classic is a fun iteration of the franchise. Each game adopts a different genre with the second entry being a highlight of the bundle. The first is a sketchy third-person action game, but the second is a fun on-the-rails shooter that will help you do Christmas harder.

Batman Returns

The second entry on the list for the World’s Greatest Detective is Batman Returns on the SNES. The combination of the comics and Christmas work wonderfully. While the game follows conventions of side-scrolling beat-em-up of the era, its chunky sprites and the number of offensive maneuvers make this a stand-out title in the genre.

James Pond II: Codename RoboCod

James Pond is a classic. Often overlooked, this cute platformer was released in the early 90s and references many cinematic heroes. Its story focuses on the unimaginable horror, of a villain taking over Santa’s Workshop. With all his helpers held hostage, it’s down to you to save the day.

Sam & Max: Beyond Time & Space

While not all of the game is Christmas-themed, Episode 1: Ice Station Santa definitely is.  With its signature humor, Sam & Max have to take down the crazed, bearded man himself in a hilarious tale. The point-and-click adventure captures that Christmas spirit by infusing elements of Dickens’ classic.

So there you have it, those are my picks for the best games set a Christmas. Have I missed your festive favorite? Is there a snowy story that captures the spirit of the holidays better?  Let us know your thoughts in the comments below or on Facebook or Twitter, and get even more amazing video game content through the links below.

Which Adventure Sits at the Top?

Kratos has been on a rampage, killing Gods in epic battles, since 2005. With each release managing to offer high-octane action, fans have flocked to every release with the Ghost of Sparta, which has helped solidify his status in the pantheon of PlayStation. So join me as I explore each God of War title and rank every adventure from his journey to Olympus to his Norse tales of fatherhood.

9. God of War: Betrayal

Kratos made his mobile debut in 2007 and while it was a strong release for the platform, it pales compared to his home console appearances. Set between his first two adventures, this side-scrolling adventure captures the same combination of violent action and puzzles, which are a hallmark of the series. Unfortunately, it came nowhere close to reaching the heights of previous entries in the franchise, which made this a forgettable release.

8. God of War: Chains of Olympus

Although it was incredible to experience the patented hack-and-slash gameplay on a handheld device, Chains of Olympus lacks the ambition which permeates the majority of releases in the series. Its basic plot, short run time and absence of memorable moments make this a game that you can easily skip.

7. God of War: Ascension

Ascension felt like an afterthought. Following the epic conclusion of the trilogy, Santa Monica made the decision to revisit Kratos’ past. While the story was adequate, it felt unnecessary and didn’t add much to the lore of the universe. In addition to this, the gameplay also got a tweak with a new dodge system. The inclusion of this was jarring as it clashed with the combat. Although it’s not the worst of the franchise, it’s definitely the weakest of the home console titles.

6. God of War (2005)

The original God of War laid the foundations that every following release was built upon. At its core, the series is about visceral combat, thought-provoking puzzles and a strong narrative; all of which were established in the very first entry to the celebrated franchise. Its premise was unique and its violence was extreme. Due to this, Kratos quickly became an icon in the industry.

5. God of War: Ghost of Sparta

I know. Some of you may be disappointed that I have placed a PSP game over the original but hear me out. Ghost of Sparta features an incredible story that explores the troubled relationship between Kratos and his brother Deimos. The focus on a deeply personal story makes the game feel unique and due to this, is a must for fans of the series. While it is held back by the hardware of the system, it still manages to deliver excellent and memorable moments. So if you can, check out this often-overlooked gem.

4. God of War 3

The trilogy’s finale has some of the greatest boss battles. Climbing Gaia to fight Poseidon and taking on the mammoth titan Cronos could be considered some of the best encounters in the medium. As this was the first release in the franchise to move generations, God of War 3 was a jaw-dropping experience. Its stunning setpieces and the conclusion of Kratos’ Greek tale make this an incredible experience.

3. God of War 2

God of War 2 improves on every aspect of the original. The story provides further insight into Kratos and his relationship with the gods, raising the stakes on your quest. With plenty of twists and turns on the way, Santa Monica exercises its narrative flair in this entry. Platforming, combat and puzzles were all refined, improving each asset of the gameplay. The combination of all of these elements results in the best traditional God of War game.

2. God of War (2018)

Santa Monica’s brave decision to reinvent the iconic series certainly paid off. Transforming Kratos into a father who wants nothing more than to live a peaceful life couldn’t have been further away from his previous representation, but it worked. This made the Ghost of Sparta more relatable as it added that much-needed human quality to his persona. The transition to a Norse world set up some incredible match-ups and its reinterpretation of the combat set a new precedent for modern action games.

1. God of War Ragnarök

2018 left a litany of narrative threads and Ragnarök concludes these in epic fashion. While its predecessor includes cinematic clashes with Baldur and Freya, top-tier Gods like Thor and Odin were left for the sequel. These mouth-watering encounters don’t disappoint and are a highlight of the entire franchise. In addition to this, the ability to control Atreus for portions of the game adds more variety and helps Ragnarök land the top spot.

What are your thoughts on the list? Do you agree with my ranking? If not, what would you change and why? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below or on Facebook or Twitter, and get even more amazing video game content through the links below.

PS2 Game Manuals are Fully Archived

Remember the last time you finally got home after a long day of work/school/whatever, fresh new game in hand? Remember cracking that thing open on the couch, setting the whole game aside, and just diving into the physical manual? That was a long time ago – not quite as old as the PS2, but not far off. Back when each game would try their hardest to transform a basic set of instructions into a unique experience. They’d teach you about the game lore, they’d immerse you in the game’s general vibes, and build a ton of hype for the full experience.

playstation 2 feature

Physical manuals may be a thing of the past, but that doesn’t mean you can’t recreate it. A game-preservation diehard just finished a project that’s been over 20 years in the making. You can see the fruits of their labor here.

Each entry is a complete, high-quality scan of every single PS2 game manual. Every last one. Considering the depth of the PS2’s library, this was no small feat.

I consider this ‘functional preservation’ for now,” the man behind the project said in an interview with Kotaku. “Since I’ve popped the staples, I can always chuck them on a flatbed to properly preserve them. But then it goes back to my perfectionist nature. What is ‘good enough’? 2400 dpi at 48-bit color (over one gigabyte per page). At what point are we archiving ink instead of images? There is no easy answer.

In the future, I’d love to have an AI that can truly reconstruct the text and images as they were intended, correcting skew and properly descreening without blurring line art,” he said. “As it is, no one really wants a 600 dpi scan with staple holes and black edges, they just want the polished, finished project.

How Did BioWare Screw Up?

It’s not often we see a developer fall so far from grace. Once regarded as pioneers in narrative-driven RPGs, BioWare has completely lost its way. So, what the hell happened? Join me as I look at the successes and failures of the Canadian giants and see if they can climb their way back to the top of the genre.

A Roll of the Dice

BioWare’s sophomore release established the company as innovators in the industry. Set in the Forgotten Realms, Baldur’s Gate is an exquisite interpretation of Dungeons and Dragons. The incredible writing, deep, complex characters and faithful combat made the game a hit with enthusiasts. While they perfected the formula with its sequel and Neverwinter Nights, their voyage to a galaxy far, far away gained them mainstream notoriety.

Star Wars hadn’t had much success in the realm of video games. Mediocre titles let fans play out their fantasies but none leaned into the lore of the world to provide a unique story until BioWare came along. Regarded as a timeless classic and with a full remake due to be released, Knights of the Old Republic is still considered the greatest Star Wars game to date. An issue that many titles have had, is the need to connect the narrative to its movie counterpart. Sure many like the idea of playing as Luke or Darth Vader but this restricts how the story can play out. Bioware sidestepped the issue, setting the game 4000 years before the films which gave them room to plot a wonderful narrative that fluctuates based on your choices. Taking elements from their previous releases, Knights of the Old Republic uses a dynamic d20 combat system and gives players the freedom to morph their character to personalize their experience in the universe.

The Last Action Hero

Probably the most overlooked game in their library is Jade Empire, a stunning ARPG based on Chinese mythology. Strafing away from their D&D roots, this marks their first release without a dice system. While the combat is a little rough, it proves that BioWare was willing to experiment and it laid the groundwork for their biggest success: Mass Effect.

The commercial success of the space odyssey allowed Bioware to spread its wings and create the fabulous Dragon Age series. While both have had controversial entries, collectively they have told remarkable stories which center around relationships and characters. So where did it go wrong?

To Descend From Greatness

Although many blame EA for their demise, we have to remember that some of their best games were released for the company. My belief is the slew of major personnel that left the company, altered its landscape, leaving them directionless. Mass Effect Andromeda was to be a fresh start for the franchise: new worlds, characters and stories. While the premise was fascinating, the game design was anything but.

The original trilogy includes unique worlds with tailored experiences within. There’s a lovely semi-open ethos that permeates throughout. Some worlds act as hubs for you to explore and discover additional information about the various races whereas others are designed as linear levels. Due to this, Bioware was able to create a delicious pace to the narrative which is lost in Andromeda. The move from linear levels to missions on a larger map removes the cinematic feel which was key to the franchise. In addition to the lacklustre mission design, issues with EA’s insistence on using the Frostbite engine were apparent in the game.

BioWare’s last release is the culmination of issues and bad decisions from the past few years. In a last-ditch attempt to stay relevant, they jumped on the ‘games as a service’ bandwagon. A looter shooter multiplayer is not what the company should create. Stories and characters took a back seat and we were left with a mediocre action game. The lack of post-game content and failure to deliver on lofty world event promises meant that Anthem died quickly and with that, so did Bioware’s reputation.

A Light at the end of the tunnel

Shockingly, BioWare’s last great release was 8 years ago. While there are plans for a reboot of the Mass Effect series and a new Dragon Age is on its way, the company has lost some of its credibility, however, there is still hope. Recently, EA has allowed developers such as Respawn to create games that they’ve wanted to do. The success of Fallen Order suggests that they are no longer placing mandatory parameters on all of their games. If this is the case, will we see something special with Dragon Age: Dreadwolf? Although most of the original developers have left, messaging with the new project leads has been excellent. With a clear focus to restore the great name of Bioware as the epitome of RPGs, will this be the start of a glorious new chapter for the company?

Minecraft Is Getting a Lot of Backlash Following Chat Moderation Update https://cogconnected.com/2022/07/minecraft-backlash-chat-moderation-update/ Sun, 31 Jul 2022 02:10:49 +0000 https://cogconnected.com/?p=314706 Many Minecraft players are angry at Mojang following the announcement that private servers will be subject to moderation.

Minecraft Will Start to Moderate Private Servers

The Minecraft community is not too happy with Mojang at the moment. Devs  announced to the gaming public that private servers will be subject to moderation following the game’s recent update. The update will now allow players to report each other for “inappropriate chat messages or dangerous behavior” even on private servers.

The type of behavior that will get you banned is hate speech, bullying, harassing, sexual solicitation, or threatening others,” Mojang announced. The Minecraft community is not too happy with this since they consider this to be a major intrusion. Plus, multiple long-time players also believe that some may conspire against others. After all, the result of the reporting will lead to the possibility of an account-wide ban.

minecraft backlash chat moderation update

The introduction of account-wide player ban has only added fuel to the fire. Mojang has always been firm about their position on these player-related matters. This has fans taking their displeasure to social media. The Minecraft community even has “SaveMinecraft” trending on Twitter ever since devs made the official announcement.

We recognize that private servers function independently from Mojang and many use that independence to create remarkable Minecraft innovations that enrich the community,” devs said. “Every player should enjoy a safe Minecraft experience wherever they choose to play.”

“The new global moderation update is unjust,” a fan wrote. “Minecraft has decided to implement a system which can permanently ban players on all servers regardless of the rules on the server.”

Seeing a game I grew up with and loved starting its downfall is extremely depressing,” the fan added. “This is not the Minecraft I grew up playing and it should not be the Minecraft kids today are growing up with.”

Mojang has always listened to what their community has to say. However, their community manager has shared that this does not automatically “mean that feedback will always change the design principles Mojang adheres to.”

Do you agree with Mojang? Let us know in the comments below.

Shaping A Narrative

The importance of stories in video games has grown exponentially. While some seamlessly blend the gameplay with the narrative, others focus primarily on the latter. These titles can be quite divisive, and they can feel like playing live roulette in Malaysia, you never know how things will turn out. Some claim that the lack of gameplay means that they fall out of the medium, whereas many refute this and champion the genre. With that in mind, I’ve compiled a list of the very best interactive stories that are currently available.

Detroit: Become Human

Set in a dystopian future, Detroit: Become Human explores the notion of artificial intelligence becoming self-aware. Told through the lives of three androids, you experience the prejudice of society in a way that is sure to resonate with many. The sheer number of choice-led paths that are available in each scenario is astounding. At the end of each scene, you get a flowchart that tracks all the options available which is a great way to encourage you to replay segments and experience different outcomes.

Firewatch

While your choices in Firewatch don’t necessarily impact the path of the story, they do build Henry’s character. As a fire lookout, you converse with another onlooker and slowly your relationship blossoms. Due to the isolation that imbues the world, a bond to the voice will emerge. You will quickly begin to be reliant on the person at the other end of the walkie-talkie and lose yourself to this wonderful adventure.

The Walking Dead

Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead was the catalyst to the episodic boom that hit consoles in the early 2010s. In a bold move, the game steps away from the iconic characters of the comics and over 5 seasons, crafts an incredible story about a young girl named Clementine. While each season is an emotional roller coaster, the first hit me the hardest. The father and daughter type relationship built between the protagonists resonated with many and is one of the greatest in the medium.

Heavy Rain

Heavy Rain is one of the greatest examples of the genre. The intense psychologic thriller has you trying to work out the identity of the Origami Killer. You control various players who are somehow connected to the case. This is one game where you truly feel like you shape the narrative. Characters can die before the climax of the story, which means you may even miss entire sequences of the game. While David Cage has explicitly said to only play the game ones, I played it countless times to witness the drastically different endings on offer.

Until Dawn

As if a celebration of the horror genre, Until Dawn manages to skitter across several traits of horror in deliciously gruesome interactive drama. The influences of Quantic Dream are evident with its butterfly effect system and vulnerable protagonists. While the game leans on conventions, it is an absolute thrill with memorable moments that will keep your pulse racing throughout.

Life is Strange: True Colors

Life is Stranger has garnered a cult following due to its progressive representation of youth. While its first season was both touching and heartbreaking, it’s Alex Chen’s story that is the highlight of the franchise. Set in the picturesque Haven Springs, you can read the emotions of its inhabitants and use these to influence their story. True Colors is a beautiful example of subtle storytelling. Plots develop over time and soon you feel part of the community and care about the characters who reside there.

The Wolf Among Us

Set before the incredible Fable graphic novels, The Wolf Among Us sees you take the role of Bigby Wolf. Living in the shadows, fairytale characters lead strange lives under the nose of humans. When a series of murders occur, an investigation begins to find out who is behind the heinous crimes. This detective adventure stands out amongst the crowd due to its setting and witty dialogue. If you haven’t played it, do so before its recently announced sequel is released.

Road 96

Road 96 is a procedurally generated adventure. While everyone will experience the same narrative, you’ll encounter it at different points. Set in a fictional state, you play as different characters who look to flee. Each trip to cross the border will include encounters with a quirky cast of characters. The innovative structure means that you will gradually learn every character’s intertwining story after several trips.

Tales From The Borderlands

Probably the most overlooked release from Telltale is Tales From The Borderlands. As someone who has no interest in the world, I played the game simply due to the developer’s moniker. After several heart-wrenching titles from the company, it’s great to see them attack the lighter side of entertainment. In short, this is simply hilarious. It’s an 80s-inspired adventure that perfectly hits comedic beats and counters them with wonderful and emotional moments. If you’ve not played, it’s a must.

As Dusk Falls

As Dusk Falls is a story that focuses are the hardship of life. Due to its incredible writing, the characters feel real which makes you question each action and its possible consequences. The stills-based visual design gives the game its own identity but it’s the brave and bold approach to storytelling that will leave a lasting mark.

Well, those are my picks for the best interactive story games. What are your thoughts? Should The Quarry have knocked off Until Dawn? Would The Late Shift have made your top 10? GTA Online Can’t Escape the Economic and Climate Crisis

GTA Online’s next update is arriving on July 26th. It would seem that The Criminal Enterprises will have in-game crooks and industry leaders taking advantage of the economic and climate crisis—seemingly like the real world.

Gas prices have spiked to their highest levels in decades,” Rockstar Games said. “Retail supply chains are in turmoil and to top it off a ferocious heatwave is gripping the state.”

gta online next update high gas prices heatwave

Fortunately for GTA Online characters, these problems do not really affect them. The gangsters within the game are al extremely rich and never have to gas up their vehicles. Perhaps the only time they would suffer from a heat stroke is if someone throws a molotov cocktail in their face.

The update’s new story does affect the game’s missions and expansions, however. In fact, it is right in the center of The Criminal Enterprises update.

The profits from soaring gas prices all seem to be flowing one way into the pockets of the most notorious oil-rich dynasty in the Los Santos area,” devs continued. “The IAA smells a criminal conspiracy—Agent ULP will be in touch with the new Operation Paper Trail.”

The goal of one to four players will be to “investigate the local petrochemical magnate, the Duggans, to see if they are the invisible hand behind spiraling oil prices.”

Every single criminal in GTA Online will take advantage of the economic and climate crisis. They are all after only one thing: profit. Devs increased payouts across the board. This is a very welcome incentive for players to keep grinding the same high paying mission multiple times. They will also find the smaller jobs much more worth their time and effort.

Are you playing the game? Let us know in the comments below.
