Ranking Wario’s Greatest Games https://cogconnected.com/feature/ranking-warios-greatest-games/ Sat, 04 Nov 2023 11:40:10 +0000 https://cogconnected.com/?post_type=feature&p=340292 With the mustachioed maniac’s new release just around the corner, I’ve decided to rank the top 10 Wario games.

Ranking Wario’s Greatest Games

The yin to Mario’s yang, Wario is an established member of Nintendo’s zany cast of characters. From side-scrolling adventures to micro-game madness, the treasure-hungry antagonist has taken the reins on an array of strange and wonderful games. With the mustachioed maniac’s new release just around the corner, I’ve decided to rank the top 10 Wario games.

10. Wario Land: Shake It!

The Wiimote was divisive. While it did allow anyone to engage, it also led to a number of games dumbing down their controls with motion mechanics. Wario Land: Shake It! managed to nail its implementation. Keeping the platform premise at the forefront, you shake your Wiimote to perform certain actions which helps to create a fun, unique adventure.

9. Wario World

Although painfully short, Wario World is a blast from start to finish. Sure, it’s conventional but the game has buckets of character and looks great on the GameCube. Often forgotten, this dusty gem is definitely worth seeking out.

8. Wario Land 4

Leaning more into the Metroidvania style of gameplay Wario Land 4 strays away from its predecessors to form its own identity. Its stand-out visuals and music are a highlight of the game and help to make this a memorable experience.

7. WarioWare: D.I.Y.

WarioWare is all about strange micro-games. How can you crank the insanity up? Well, give players the tool to create their own. While a game like this would have exploded on the Switch, it still did extremely well and is widely considered one of the best games in the series.

6. WarioWare: Get it Together!

Get it Together! moves away from the formula by combining traditional platform mechanics with the bonkers scenarios. Each character moves in a specific way and you must complete the micro-game using their method of traversal. It’s still crazy and manages to capture that great couch co-op feeling that Nintendo is famous for.

5. Wario Land 3

While Wario Land 4 went on to develop the structure further, I believe that the third entry was superior. The level design is fantastic and is full of innovative elements that make the moment-to-moment gameplay feel great.

4. WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$!

A remake of the GBA classic, Mega Party Game$! is an absolute blast! The originality in this game is second-to-none and was a party centerpiece at many households. Although the format has evolved into more motion-based micro-games, there’s still a place for a game like this.

3. Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land

The first title with Wario as a playable character is one of the best. While held back by the power of the GameBoy, each level is still full of clever ideas that make each step in the world an absolute joy. Don’t be deterred by the dated visuals, go back and check out this classic.

2. WarioWare: Touched

Touched transcended the fanbase and became a hit with casual gamers too. Due to the DS touchpad, this was easy for anyone to pick up and play. The ridiculous scenarios that require quick reactions were insanely addictive and made this one of the best games in the franchise.

1. WarioWare: Smooth Moves

Arguably the best use of Wiimotes can be found in Smooth Moves. Nintendo took what worked on Touched and developed this for the Wii. The absurd microgames were well-designed but also hilarious to watch others play. Performing comical actions to complete a task helps to make this the perfect party game. As a result, Smooth Moves takes first place for the best game featuring the crazed character.

Well, there you have it. Do you agree with the list? What would you change? Do you think the next game in the franchise will be better than the titles above? Peter Molyneux is a Visionary and I Can’t Wait For His Next Game https://cogconnected.com/feature/peter-molyneux-is-a-visionary/ Sat, 23 Sep 2023 14:00:53 +0000 https://cogconnected.com/?post_type=feature&p=337005 Peter Molyneux is a polarising figure but whether you're a fan or not, his contribution has shaped the industry.

The post Peter Molyneux is a Visionary and I Can’t Wait For His Next Game appeared first on COGconnected.

]]>
Is Peter Molyneux a Genius?

Peter Molyneux is a polarising figure. Some adore the ambition and creativity that imbues each of his releases, whereas others feel that he over-promises and under-delivers. No matter which side of the fence you lie on, it’s clear to see that Molyneux is an auteur and his contributions have shaped the industry.

A pioneer, Molyneux does something many developers refuse to do: take risks. Although not all of his ideas work, he should be applauded for his innovation rather than reprimanded for not sticking to the status quo. Like all incredible developers, failed attempts allow them to refine and perfect ideas. Metal Gear set the foundation for Kojima to alter the landscape of the industry 11 years later with Metal Gear Solid and without Karateka, there would be no Prince of Persia. So why does Molyneux get so much stick for simply being aspirational?

Innovative Ideas

A divisive developer, the British icon has a tendency to oversell parts of his games. While this may be just his excitement about the possibilities getting the better of him, it can also mislead fans. Despite that, the ideas are still there, just not fully realised. For example, the final third of Fable 3 saw you take on the role of King and make decisions that would alter the face of Albion. Although unique and thrilling, choices didn’t include enough weight. Some did halt you in your tracks to consider the ramifications but most were just simple decisions. In addition to that, it jumped a ton of days which meant the segment was over far too quickly. Even though there are issues, it’s a memorable section which stands out due to its originality.

Sticking with the Fable series, the second iteration is my personal favorite. The world is packed with charm and character which makes exploration a joy. British culture seeps into every orifice to create hilarious interactions that stand out amongst its peers. While this is a wonderful adventure, it garners hate for undercooked aspects which you can easily overlook. When promoting the sequel, the dog was a clear focus. The companionship was supposed to be central to the game, with your pet’s appearance morphing depending on your actions. Although a great idea, its implementation was rudimentary.

Taking a Risk

Taking the bold move to leave Microsoft, Peter developed his most innovative title to date, Curiosity: What’s Inside the Cube. The mobile game was a huge cube with tiles on each side. You and millions of others would simply tap it to remove a tile, with the last person winning something ‘life-changing’. Okay, they fully dropped the ball with the prize as it felt like an advert for his next game. The winner didn’t seem to get everything he was promised, never mind something ‘life changing’. Regardless, the social experiment is a groundbreaking idea and led into his return to the God game genre.

Godus looked to take inspiration from his previous titles, Populous, Black & White and Theme Park to create a new take on the genre. Plenty of creators have gone to Kickstarter to help fund their projects. Heck, we wouldn’t have got Shenmue 3 or the Castlevania spiritual successor, Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night without the platform. However, Molyneux was panned for his method of funding which ultimately led to bad press for the release of his mobile venture.

Admittedly, his career has gone downhill since 22cans but surely it’s time for a comeback? For the first time in years, Peter is back coding for a new game that is due to release on consoles and PC. The decision to leave mobile is sure to help the success of this upcoming project and comments made about the similarities with his Fable games will pique the interest of gamers from that era.

What’s Next?

It is clear that Molyneux creates games to push the envelope and that’s what excites me about his upcoming project. He is an innovator. He wants to try things that will inspire others. I can’t even imagine what interesting quirks he’ll embed in his new game, but I’m positive it’ll be like nothing else currently available. Due to this, I think as a community, we should encourage Molyneux to proceed with his vision and receive his next project with open arms. Yes, not all his ideas work but whatever he’s working on could include that special something that inspires a generation.

What are your thoughts on his upcoming game? Are you excited to see what he comes up with? Will it reach the heights of his earlier work? Let us know in the comments below or on Facebook or Twitter, and don’t forget to subscribe to us on YouTube for more great video game content.

Sony Should Revive These Forgotten Classics https://cogconnected.com/feature/sony-should-revive-these-forgotten-classics/ Sat, 26 Aug 2023 14:00:16 +0000 https://cogconnected.com/?post_type=feature&p=334318 Sony has amazing exclusives but plenty have disappeared. So, join me as I look at forgotten titles that Sony should revive.

Bring ‘Em Back Sony!

Sony regularly smashes it out of the park with its exclusives. Franchises like Uncharted and God of War have had a number of sequels on a range of platforms and are rightfully considered pillars of the company. While many of the Japanese giant’s IPs have gone from strength to strength, there are plenty that has been left by the wayside. So, join me as I look at forgotten titles that Sony should revive for the PlayStation 5.

Syphon Filter

Absent since 2007, Syphon Filter is long overdue for a return to consoles. The stealth action adventure saw you take on the role of Gabe Logan, a special agent, who could take down enemies in a slick and stylish manner. Although the genre exploded in the late 90s/early 2000s, there’s currently a gap in the market for a sneaky hero. Reports emerged that Sony approached Bend Studios about a possible reboot but unfortunately, that didn’t come to fruition. However, the fact that they are exploring the possibility suggests that there is still hope that the title will creep back onto the PlayStation in the near future.

Jak and Daxter

It’s an absolute disgrace that Jak and Daxter’s last game was in 2009. Granted, there was a time when every other game released was a 3D platformer, but now, there’s a serious lack of representation of the genre. Comebacks are all the rage, Crash is back on top, heck, even lower-tier characters like Kao the Kangeroo are releasing fun, platform adventures. So, why haven’t we had a game featuring the dynamic duo? Well, one reason is that Naughty Dog has been focusing on creating masterpieces, however, Sony could easily get a different developer to work on a new Jak and Daxter game. Please, make it happen!

Infamous

Superhero movies may have lost their lustre but games featuring comic book icons are at an all-time high. Insomniac’s Spider-Man was a revelation, however, other attempts have yet to reach the same heights. With RockSteady’s Suicide Squad on the way, it makes sense for Sony to re-introduce Cole McGrath and crew. While not based on a comic, the game drew inspiration from the panels. The special powers, open world and strong story combined to offer a great experience that many loved. Dormant since 2014, it’s time for a heroic comeback.

The Order: 1886

Okay, hear me out. Although The Order: 1886 was panned, there were glimmers of greatness within the brief escapade. Not only was it a visual showcase, but the premise and atmosphere were incredible. Roaming around a 19th-century, steampunk-inspired London in search of werewolves was pretty cool. Mechanically the game was tight but mission variety lacked imagination making it quite repetitive. While the game clearly had issues, there’s definitely potential in the idea and I for one would love to see a sequel.

Sly Cooper

Out of Sony’s platformers, Sly Cooper was my favorite. Stealth and platforming merged to create a truly fascinating game that was packed with character. Bentley and Murray not only helped improve the dynamics of the group but they also had unique stages that varied the gameplay. Even though 2013 saw a return of the thief, it wasn’t enough to spark new interest in the franchise. As there has been a resurgence in the genre, surely there’s space for a new adventure featuring the furry mammal?

PaRappa the Rapper

PaRappa the Rapper is iconic with PlayStation, yet they don’t capitalize on the property. Full of personality, the game resonated with audiences due to its sheer goofiness. So, why haven’t we had another game with the rapping pooch? Well, the genre took an almighty decline after players got tired of Guitar Hero-style titles, but now the genre has found a new home: VR. With titles like Beat Saber making waves on the platform, Sony should develop a VR PaRappa the Rapper game to boost interest in the PSVR 2.

Heavenly Sword

Ninja Theory is one of the most underrated developers. DmC: Devil May Cry, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice are modern classics. While they have started to receive their deserved acclaim, Heavenly Sword is still overlooked. Nariko was a wonderful protagonist and Andy Serkis was incredible as the antagonist. The game did have some shoehorned Sixaxis sections, however, the addictive, flashy combat and unique world felt like the beginning of a new franchise. Will we ever see something new in the universe? Probably not, but we can always hope.

Gravity Rush

Originally released on the PS Vita, this game was so good that Sony remastered it for home consoles. The game follows Kat, a young female who can shift gravity. This leads to some incredible gameplay opportunities that made this arguably the best game on the portable device. Unfortunately, the sequel lacked the same originality and vision, however, there is still something in the concept, it just needs another chance.

Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale

There are plenty of Smash Bros. clones but this is the best of the bunch. Icons battling against each other sounds like a great idea but Sony played it a little too safe staying too close to their influences. Even with that in mind, the game had some great elements. The addition of a combo system anchored the game as a fighter and the leveled specials added variety to fights. Releasing a sequel that builds on the foundations of the original and takes the title in a new direction could reignite interest in the fighter.

Killzone

Some shooters feel big and bulky in a great way. Gears of War captures that notion perfectly. The weight of the armor and weapons makes each kill satisfying. While Killzone never reached the same heights, it carries the same ethos. Guerilla Games have moved on to great things with the Horizon series but there is a gap in the market for a first-person shooter of this ilk. Will we ever see the series back on modern consoles? I think so.

Well, that’s my list of classic games that Sony should revive. Do you agree with my picks? Are there any on there that you think should stay locked in the vault? Which games would you add? WayBackWhen

Funny story about the Shantae series. The first game came out right at the tail-end of the Game Boy Color lifecycle. Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution was in development, but because the previous game’s sales were bad, it was hard to get it published. As to not compromise the creative product, the assets were locked away, never to see the light of day…

Twenty years later, WayForward is getting their chance to revive the lost episode of the Shantae series. Risky’s Revenge was the second game, which came eight years after the original. At that point in the story, a bunch of side characters were introduced, but in an off-screen kind of way. Risky Revolution was where they were supposed to officially get acquainted with Shantae.

Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution

The twist in Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution is that there is a machine that can rotate the upper part of the world. This is so that Risky Boots can rob different areas more easily. Shantae uses it to explore new areas and thwart Risky’s plans. The machine can revolve the background and other parts of the game as a puzzle mechanic.

Creative Director Matt Bozon says that Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution will launch in early 2024. It will be published by Limited Run Games, so expect some cool special editions. It will be released on a physical Game Boy Advance cartridge, but hopefully other more modern platforms will get in on the fun.

Will you be returning to the early Shantae stories? Let us know in the comments below.

Which is the Best Street Fighter Game?

The Street Fighter franchise has continued to innovate for over 30-plus years. Each release possesses original ideas which create a delicious base for intense 1v1 combat. With every game being distinct, I have decided to revisit and rank the iconic titles. Due to the number of versions available, I am only ordering games developed by Capcom (so, none of the EX series), no crossovers (sorry Street Fighter X Tekken fans) and only one entry per numbered title. Well, with that out of the way, let’s rank the Street Fighter series starting with the worst of the series.

9. Street Fighter

Although the original set the foundation for every subsequent release, it sits at the bottom of the pile in terms of gameplay. While you can still deliver a devastating Hadouken, it lacks the fluidity and personality that enshrouds the series. The flair that we have come to expect with Capcom characters is absent with even franchise favorites coming across as bland iterations; however, it is packed with ideas that would soon morph into the most important game in the history of the genre, but that’s higher in the list.

8. Street Fighter Alpha

After several iterations of Street Fighter 2, many expected Capcom to release the highly anticipated sequel, however, they threw a curveball with the Alpha prequels. With its stunning art direction, the inclusion of Final Fight characters and much more, it was a hit with fans. Introducing the three-tiered Super Combo, Street Fighter Alpha is a key title that shaped the future of the franchise.

7. Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold

A natural expansion on its predecessor, Alpha 2 welcomed new and returning characters into the fray. Minor tweaks refined the experience to deliver incredible combat that resonated with fans. While it doesn’t drastically alter anything, it is still an incredible fighter that continues to be a fan favorite.

6. Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition

The initial release of Street Fighter 5 was an unexpected misstep. The lack of modes, characters locked behind paywalls and other aspects left a sour taste in the mouths of fans. While Capcom made some perplexing decisions such as the addition of adverts, the gameplay was still incredible. Most of the issues were addressed in the Arcade and Champion Editions, and by the end, the game boasted the largest selection of World Warriors, however, a lot of players already checked out before this.

5. Street Fighter Alpha 3

The third release in the prequel series is the best. Capcom overhauled the gameplay adding three new fighting styles: A-ISM, V-ISM and X-ISM. Each of these alters the combat, offering a simple mode suitable for newcomers, standard and variable options. With a packed roster and breathtaking animation, Alpha 3 is a must-play for fans of the genre.

4. Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo

Street Fighter 2 has a ridiculous number of iterations, but Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo is the pinnacle of these. One key factor to this is the introduction of Akuma. A fierce rival of Ryu, he went on to become a major antagonist of the series and a fan favorite. As well as this, the game also was the first to include the Super Attack, which has since become a staple of the series. With the ability to turn on the turbo mode as well, this version took the classic to the next level.

3. Ultra Street Fighter 4

It took 11 years for the next numbered entry in the series but it was definitely worth the wait. The shift from pixel art to fully rendered 3D model was a move that could have gone awry but Capcom’s attention to detail and signature personality shone through to capture the hearts of fans. Cinematic flair was added to Supers to heighten their impact and the Focus Attacks gave new strategic options during battles. The culmination of this not only reinvigorated the franchise but also the genre. The Ultra version of the game balances the characters and adds a plethora of fan favorites to make this one of the greatest fighters ever.

2. Street Fighter 3: Third Strike

Arguably the most technical of the series, Street Fighter 3 is a wonderful fighter. In a brave move, Capcom introduced a number of new characters with only a few big players returning. The overall presentation is magnificent. Visually, it perfects the pixel art style of its predecessor to deliver a smooth experience with incredible animation. However, it was the parry system that was a game changer. The ability to counter, allowed players to portray an elite level of skill and pummel their opponent in a stylish and slick manner.

1. Street Fighter 6

After SFV stumbled at the starting block, it was important for Capcom to make sure that Street Fighter 6 did not fall over the same hurdles. In complete contrast to its predecessor, SF6 is packed with content. With a full single-player mode, various combat options and a unique online experience, the game is larger than any other in the franchise. In addition to this, mechanically, it’s the best it has ever felt. The Drive System combines aspects of prior releases to create a strategic layer to combat. New characters offer interesting options to cap off a truly remarkable fighter that raises the bar for its opponents.

So, that’s my list of the best Street Fighter games. Do you agree with the rank order? If not, what would you change and why? Let us know in the comments below or on Facebook or Twitter, and don’t forget to subscribe to us on YouTube for some great video game content.

A Return from the Past

It’s always a great sight to behold when game studios honor the consoles of the past. It’s even better when studios decide to make a game for some of these old consoles. Today, Independent development studio The Retro Room Games has announced that their RPG, visual novel, Red Moon Lost Days, is out now for the Sega Saturn. Available in The Retro Room Games’ store, the game invites players to a retro time with physical copies of the game. A press release provides more details on the game itself. Additionally, a launch video lets players take a look at the game.

Red Moon Lost Days

Red Moon Lost Days introduces players to Kyou Tan Wa, a pilot, on a quest to Egypt. As Kyou, players will investigate the disappearance of a friend. Importantly, this friend is a high-ranking general in the army. Interestingly, the game combines RPG elements with a visual novel approach. Players will be able to explore pixel art environments, adventuring throughout the deserts of Egypt and uncovering the mysteries that they have become wrapped up in. Additionally, players have multiple choices to make as they navigate the narrative of the visual novel.

In order to play the game fans will need a modified Sega Saturn or an expansion cartridge capable of running homebrew games on the console. Check out everything that comes with the physical copies of the game in the new launch trailer. View the trailer below.

Red Moon Lost Days is available for purchase now at the Retro Room Games store. Additional information is available on the studios’ website

I Love an Easter Egg Hunt!

It’s that time of year again when we overindulge in chocolate eggs and scour the wardrobes for elasticated pants. In order to celebrate the occasion, I’ve decided to look at a different kind of Easter Egg in the medium we love the most. So join me as I explore the most delicious secrets that developers burrow within their games.

Spoilers Ahead

Metal Gear Solid 3

One of my absolute favorite games is Metal Gear Solid 3 and this includes a gem of an Easter Egg. The End is the oldest of The Cobra Unit, however, he is an incredible sniper. When you begin your confrontation with the master, if you save the game and return a week later (or simply change the date), The End dies of old age! In addition to this, there is an early opportunity to rid the world of the character. When you first see him, you can take a shot and assassinate him before these events even take place. It’s clever and very Kojima!

Metal Gear Solid 5

While I could easily write a list that consisted simply of Kojima games, I’m not going to do that. However, the Easter Egg in Metal Gear Solid 5 definitely deserves a shout. Yes, I could mention the nods to 80s pop culture, the fact that Kojima himself is in it, or even the nuclear disarmament but sometimes the subtle ones are the best. As you progress through the story, you realize that Snake doesn’t seem the same. His attitude and his morals seem skewed. Fans around the world were shocked to learn that you were actually playing as a different person who had undergone surgery to look like Snake, however, this was foreshadowed throughout. As you sit in the chopper and select your missions, at certain points in the day you can see your reflection and you guessed it, in the window is your true identity!

Dead Rising

Capcom’s Dead Rising is a fun and playful take on the zombie genre. You can use all manner of silly weapons to slice up enemies as you try to survive in an infested mall. Throughout, you’ll notice a range of shops that you can visit for items and one is a lovely nod to the Resident Evil series. An eatery is called Jill’s Sandwiches after the iconic line from the first game. The little reference keeps with the humorous nature of the game while paying homage to the most famous zombie game.

Dead Space

As Isaac, your main goal is to find your wife, Nicole, and get off the USG Ishimura. As missions progress, there are hints that your mental state is deteriorating. Although the twist cements the notion, the game spells it out for you through the title of each chapter. Read only the first letter of missions and it spells out ‘Nicole is Dead’. A haunting but fitting way to foreshadow the conclusion.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

GTA is full of secrets. Rockstar has placed a ton of hidden treats throughout their rich world which constantly reward exploration. Parodying is part and parcel of the developer’s ethos and their mockery of the actual Easter egg is one of its greats. If you go to the roof of a building near the VCN, you can jump through to enter a room that literally has a large chocolate egg that sits on a pedestal.

God of War: Ragnarok

There are plenty of things to discover in Santa Monica’s epic but Kvasir’s poems are, in my opinion, the best. Throughout, you’ll discover several well-written poems which are about iconic titles released on the PlayStation. They are extremely well done and work within the game’s premise, however, astute fans will be able to make links to famous franchises which will make you want to find them all.

Mortal Kombat

Reptile is synonymous with the franchise, however, you had to jump through several hoops to unlock him. You need to achieve two flawless victories on the pit stage while not blocking for the entirety of the fight. You must also conclude the battle with a fatality when an object sails past the moon. This is no joke. Once all of the criteria have been met, you are then transported to the bottom of the pit to face the green ninja.

Arkham Asylum

Some Easter eggs are hard to find but the Warden’s room in Arkham Asylum was missed by everybody! Inside were hints about the future of the franchise, showing blueprints for the eventual sequel, Arkham City. Rocksteady was so eager for this to be discovered that they actually announced its existence in a podcast! This led to fans scurrying back to the game to see this glimpse into the future.

Donkey Kong Country 2

An overlooked classic is the incredible Donkey Kong Country 2. Not only did it refine its predecessor, but it also took the genre to new heights with its innovative level design. If you 100% the game, you will reach the top spot in Cranky’s Video Game Heroes and knock off Nintendo characters from the podium. While it’s nice to see Mario, Yoshi and Link in the game, the real treat is at the bottom right of the screen. Near the trash can is a sign that says ‘No Hopers’ and on the floor lay Sonic’s red trainers and Earthworm Jim’s gun. It’s rare for Nintendo to throw shade at other games but when they do, they don’t hold back!

Dead Island

Dead Island has gained cult status due to several reasons. Its luscious beach setting was a wonderful contrast to the visceral zombie action. Within the horrific world is Jason Voorhees. Yes, you read that right. While it isn’t the licensed version, the psychopath dwells in a small hut near a camp, wears a hockey mask and has a machete. A bunch of other references to the legendary Friday 13th franchise is also evident which makes this encounter one of the best Easter eggs.

Well, there you have it. Those are my favorite Easter eggs in video games. Are there any on the list that you’d swap for something else? Are there any on here that you didn’t know about? Top 10 Video Games Set at Christmas

It’s that time of year again when classic forms of media resurface to get you in the holiday spirit. Although you may be able to quickly select your favorite song or play your most beloved movie, you may draw a blank when thinking about the best Christmas game. Well, I’ve scoured the exhaustive list that fits the bill and selected the finest titles that allow you to step into Christmas.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is, without a doubt, my favorite festive game. What’s more Christmas-y than swinging around a frosty New York with your friendly neighborhood web swinger? Its slick combat and fast-paced traversal in a decked-up Big Apple make this one of the best games set at Christmas.

Batman: Arkham Origins

The Arkham games managed to capture the many aspects that make the Dark Knight the greatest superhero of them all. While not the greatest in the franchise, Origins is unfairly overlooked. Its great boss battles, improved detective mechanics, and story make this a memorable time with the caped crusader. Set on Christmas Eve, the snow-covered Gotham is an excellent way to get you in the festive mood.

Bayonetta 2

Bayonetta 2 is one of the greatest action games to date, so what better reason to revisit the classic than to get you in the holiday spirit? While you may remember the over-the-top, ridiculous action set pieces more than the story, the game is actually set at Christmas. Seeing the witch herself purchasing presents and Rodin dressed as Santa is both bonkers and brilliant.

Tom Clancy’s The Division

After a virus decimates the population, the world is sent into chaos and anarchy reigns supreme. Doesn’t sound too Christmasy right? Well, this happens in the lead-up to the big day, so New York is covered in snow and decorated with lights. So you get that warm, fuzzy feeling as you pump enemies full of bullets.

Dead Rising 4

Dead Rising is good ol’ silly fun. Knocking down zombies with a bowling ball, using the undead as a boxing bag, and slicing up a horde with a massive samurai sword is the perfect way to relieve the stress of the holidays. Its iconic setting and crazy cast of characters make this a wonderful Christmas time.

Yakuza Kiwami

The Yakuza games are complex crime-thrillers that explore the underbelly of Japan, however, this is countered with ridiculous scenarios that make the game an absolute joy. Kiwami is set in December, so the streets of Kamurocho have a real festive feel. Decorations lace the area and there are several yuletide-themed presents hidden within.

Die Hard Trilogy

Many argue that Die Hard is the best Christmas film, well, they’re wrong because it’s Muppets’ Christmas Carol. Regardless of this, John McClain and his ass-kicking antics are now synonymous with the period and this classic is a fun iteration of the franchise. Each game adopts a different genre with the second entry being a highlight of the bundle. The first is a sketchy third-person action game, but the second is a fun on-the-rails shooter that will help you do Christmas harder.

Batman Returns

The second entry on the list for the World’s Greatest Detective is Batman Returns on the SNES. The combination of the comics and Christmas work wonderfully. While the game follows conventions of side-scrolling beat-em-up of the era, its chunky sprites and the number of offensive maneuvers make this a stand-out title in the genre.

James Pond II: Codename RoboCod

James Pond is a classic. Often overlooked, this cute platformer was released in the early 90s and references many cinematic heroes. Its story focuses on the unimaginable horror, of a villain taking over Santa’s Workshop. With all his helpers held hostage, it’s down to you to save the day.

Sam & Max: Beyond Time & Space

While not all of the game is Christmas-themed, Episode 1: Ice Station Santa definitely is. With its signature humor, Sam & Max have to take down the crazed, bearded man himself in a hilarious tale. The point-and-click adventure captures that Christmas spirit by infusing elements of Dickens’ classic.

So there you have it, those are my picks for the best games set a Christmas. Have I missed your festive favorite? Is there a snowy story that captures the spirit of the holidays better? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below or on Facebook or Twitter, and get even more amazing video game content through the links below.

What The Hell Happened To BioWare? https://cogconnected.com/feature/what-the-hell-happened-to-bioware/ Sat, 10 Sep 2022 14:00:48 +0000 https://cogconnected.com/?post_type=feature&p=316849 It's not often we see a developer fall so far from grace. How Did BioWare Screw Up?

It’s not often we see a developer fall so far from grace. Once regarded as pioneers in narrative-driven RPGs, BioWare has completely lost its way. So, what the hell happened? Join me as I look at the successes and failures of the Canadian giants and see if they can climb their way back to the top of the genre.

A Roll of the Dice

BioWare’s sophomore release established the company as innovators in the industry. Set in the Forgotten Realms, Baldur’s Gate is an exquisite interpretation of Dungeons and Dragons. The incredible writing, deep, complex characters and faithful combat made the game a hit with enthusiasts. While they perfected the formula with its sequel and Neverwinter Nights, their voyage to a galaxy far, far away gained them mainstream notoriety.

Star Wars hadn’t had much success in the realm of video games. Mediocre titles let fans play out their fantasies but none leaned into the lore of the world to provide a unique story until BioWare came along. Regarded as a timeless classic and with a full remake due to be released, Knights of the Old Republic is still considered the greatest Star Wars game to date. An issue that many titles have had, is the need to connect the narrative to its movie counterpart. Sure many like the idea of playing as Luke or Darth Vader but this restricts how the story can play out. Bioware sidestepped the issue, setting the game 4000 years before the films which gave them room to plot a wonderful narrative that fluctuates based on your choices. Taking elements from their previous releases, Knights of the Old Republic uses a dynamic d20 combat system and gives players the freedom to morph their character to personalize their experience in the universe.

The Last Action Hero

Probably the most overlooked game in their library is Jade Empire, a stunning ARPG based on Chinese mythology. Strafing away from their D&D roots, this marks their first release without a dice system. While the combat is a little rough, it proves that BioWare was willing to experiment and it laid the groundwork for their biggest success: Mass Effect.

The commercial success of the space odyssey allowed Bioware to spread its wings and create the fabulous Dragon Age series. While both have had controversial entries, collectively they have told remarkable stories which center around relationships and characters. So where did it go wrong?

To Descend From Greatness

Although many blame EA for their demise, we have to remember that some of their best games were released for the company. My belief is the slew of major personnel that left the company, altered its landscape, leaving them directionless. Mass Effect Andromeda was to be a fresh start for the franchise: new worlds, characters and stories. While the premise was fascinating, the game design was anything but.

The original trilogy includes unique worlds with tailored experiences within. There’s a lovely semi-open ethos that permeates throughout. Some worlds act as hubs for you to explore and discover additional information about the various races whereas others are designed as linear levels. Due to this, Bioware was able to create a delicious pace to the narrative which is lost in Andromeda. The move from linear levels to missions on a larger map removes the cinematic feel which was key to the franchise. In addition to the lacklustre mission design, issues with EA’s insistence on using the Frostbite engine were apparent in the game.

BioWare’s last release is the culmination of issues and bad decisions from the past few years. In a last-ditch attempt to stay relevant, they jumped on the ‘games as a service’ bandwagon. A looter shooter multiplayer is not what the company should create. Stories and characters took a back seat and we were left with a mediocre action game. The lack of post-game content and failure to deliver on lofty world event promises meant that Anthem died quickly and with that, so did Bioware’s reputation.

A Light at the end of the tunnel

Shockingly, BioWare’s last great release was 8 years ago. While there are plans for a reboot of the Mass Effect series and a new Dragon Age is on its way, the company has lost some of its credibility, however, there is still hope. Recently, EA has allowed developers such as Respawn to create games that they’ve wanted to do. The success of Fallen Order suggests that they are no longer placing mandatory parameters on all of their games. If this is the case, will we see something special with Dragon Age: Dreadwolf? Although most of the original developers have left, messaging with the new project leads has been excellent. With a clear focus to restore the great name of Bioware as the epitome of RPGs, will this be the start of a glorious new chapter for the company?

How the Resident Evil Games Connect to the Netflix Show https://cogconnected.com/feature/resident-evil-games-netflix-show/ Tue, 26 Jul 2022 14:00:41 +0000 https://cogconnected.com/?post_type=feature&p=314186 Netflix has premiered their live-action Resident Evil series. It may seem isolated from the games, but there are clear connections.

Multimedia Monsters

Live-action adaptations of video games are pretty hit or miss. They miss more often than not. The new Resident Evil show on Netflix has viewers pretty divided. On one hand, RE fans are unimpressed, but critics like it a little more. If you manage to stick with it, you will find that the show connects to the mainline games quite a bit.

You may have heard that this show has lines that include “Zootopia porn” and “PornHub will shred your resume.” This is absolutely true. If you have a hard time digesting this dialogue, just remember that this is the series that said: “You were almost a Jill-sandwich” and had Chris Redfield punch a boulder without a hint of irony. By reading further, you will encounter spoilers, both big and small.

Resident Evil

Resident Evil Extended Universe

One of the main characters is Albert Wesker, who you may remember from Resident Evil 1, Code: Veronica, and 5. You may also remember that he died in RE 5, never to return. You would think that having Wesker in this show makes it a divergent story, but not entirely.

Throughout the season, the Raccoon City incident is referenced. This is the event at the center of Resident Evil 2 and 3. Umbrella and the US government bomb the city, but cover it up as a gas explosion.

A major twist and plot point in the show comes in episode 6. It is revealed that Albert Wesker is in fact one of three clones of the original Wesker from the video games. OG Wesker cloned himself to create three brilliant scientists for his own research. This occurs while Umbrella is hunting for him. In 2005, four years before Wesker is killed in an over-the-top action sequence in a volcano, Umbrella captures two of the three Wesker clones. The remaining one dies.

The finale of the first season ends on a cliffhanger. During the 2022 timeline, the Wesker children, Billie and Jade escape New Raccoon City with instructions to meet someone. That someone is Ada Wong, who appears in Resident Evil 2, 4, and 6. The second season will supposedly add Ada Wong to the cast, though the show has not been renewed as of yet.

Resident Evil

Smaller Nods

There are a couple of things that are inspired by iconic moments and tropes that the Resident Evil series is known for. Other than the out of place dialogue the games are known for, fans will notice a few some sequences that scream Resident Evil. RE 4 and 5 have recurring enemies with burlap sacks on their heads, wielding chainsaws. In episode 4, Jade Wesker is trapped in a stronghold occupied by a faction called the Brotherhood. The Brotherhood has an executioner that is clearly inspired by this enemy, though he appears to be a regular human rather than an infected one.

In episode 5, Jade and Billie receive a message from their father. It has instructions for them to decipher, leading them to a supply bag, in case they need to escape New Raccoon City. The message contains carefully worded clues that are very much like a classic Resident Evil puzzle. The twins have to carefully inspect family photos and secret panels to find their objective. All this sequence was missing was a skull with jewels for eyes or a red triangle key/door.

There also seem to be a couple of characters that share the same name as others from the video games. There is a contact that Jade has to meet named Barry and an Umbrella executive named Evelyn. They do not appear to be characters from the games, however.

You may have some serious reservations about watching live-action adaptations of video games. They are warranted, but hopefully, Netflix reaches more fans with Resident Evil as the series progresses. That is, if it gets the chance.

NinToonDev Loves the Classics!

Mascots have been part of the industry since its inception. Some led the race for supremacy in the console wars whereas others helped to establish a genre. Each iconic protagonist is synonymous with the medium and NinToonDev, has perfectly captured their personality in this glorious series which celebrates the very best characters in video games.

Mario

Let’s start with the dinosaur riding, mustachioed plumber. In this image, we see the GOAT in his famous Racoon costume. First appearing in arguably the best iteration in the franchise, Super Mario 3, this quickly became a staple in the series.

Link

Dressed in his patented green tunic, Link has set the standard for adventure games since 1986. Here, NinToonDev has highlighted the stunning environment from the classic overhead viewpoint.

Sonic

The blue blur sprinted into the limelight in 1991 and has remained a frontrunner for Sega ever since. While his recent outings have fallen short of greatness, his cinematic success means more eyes are on his next outing: Sonic Frontiers. This image shows the determined Sonic at full pace with a scene from Green Hill adorning the background.

Mega Man

Even though his popularity has dwindled as of late, the Mega Man series still holds a strong place in the hearts of many gamers. Tough as nails and packed with awesome boss encounters, we can only hope that the robot makes a return soon.

Donkey and Diddy Kong

After Donkey Kong’s return in 2010, many assumed a slew of games would release starring the tie sporting gorilla. However, since then we’ve only had one sequel which is not enough for us banana-loving fans. While it is confirmed that Retro is working on the next Metroid Prime, one can only hope that they have another team working on the next entry in the series.

Wario

It’s crazy to think that a character of the magnitude of Wario debuted on the Game Boy. Now a staple for the company, appearing in countless games, his humble beginnings has been stunningly recreated and combined with his modern design. The backdrop shows a monochromatic level from Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, with his colorful, brutish aesthetic barging into the foreground.

Baby Mario and Yoshi

Some characters are just better together. While they have appeared in games separately, the ultimate release featuring the duo is Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. Here NinToonDev brilliantly captures the relationship between the two, showing Baby Mario’s innocence and Yoshi’s loving nature.

Simon Belmont

The bad-ass vampire hunter Simon Belmont is the protagonist of the original Castlevanias. Due to its gothic visuals and groundbreaking gameplay, the game pioneered a movement that it is still evident today. This image blends the original setting with his appearance in Ultimate Smash Bros to create a truly remarkable piece.

Duck Hunt Duo

During a brief period in video game history, the light gun dominated. Games like Virtua Cop, House of the Dead and Silent Scope allowed players to live out their fantasies on home consoles. One of the pioneers of this was Duck Hunt on the NES which utilized the Zapper. While the characters have been reduced to cameo appearances on games like WarioWare, they are still synonymous with gamers from the 80s. Is it time for a comeback?

How Should Konami Celebrate Metal Gear’s 35th Anniversary? https://cogconnected.com/feature/how-should-konami-celebrate-metal-gears-35th-anniversary/ Sun, 22 May 2022 18:28:04 +0000 https://cogconnected.com/?post_type=feature&p=309079 As we sneak closer to July, fans of the Metal Gear franchise wait with bated breath to see how Konami will celebrate the 35th anniversary of the landmark series, but what should the pachinko enthusiasts do?

Time To Celebrate!

As we sneak closer to July, fans of the Metal Gear franchise wait with bated breath to see how Konami will celebrate the 35th anniversary of the landmark series. Being imprisoned since 2018’s awful Metal Gear Survive, the pachinko enthusiasts need to ensure that their next outing is a CQC hit, but what should they do?

Kojima’s baby first crawled onto the MSX in 1987 and then was later altered and ported to the NES. While the game treads new ground, it was the third entry that was the catalyst for the franchise. It inspired a cinematic and stealth movement that is still evident in the medium. With many missing out on Snake’s rookie years, should Konami reimagine his first mission?

Foxhound’s First

As Konami famously fell out with the series’ auteur, they would need a new person to lead the production. Following in the footsteps of a legend like Kojima is no easy feat but, there is one person who has lived and breathed the game and would be able to confidently take on the mammoth task: David Hayter. Hear me out. Not only is he the voice behind the iconic protagonist but he is also an exceptional writer, working on blockbuster films such as X-Men and Watchmen. With the base of the game already in existence, Hayter would easily be able to expand and adapt Metal Gear for a modern retelling. In terms of direction, he only has limited experience so he could work with someone like Sam Lake in order to capture the correct tone.

Konami’s handling of Kojima hurt fans and many of which haven’t forgiven the Japanese giants. Due to this, they need to regain the confidence of their followers by allowing those synonymous with the franchise to continue its legacy. Reimagining Metal Gear and then Metal Gear: Solid Snake would be the perfect way to celebrate the 35th anniversary and would also mark the beginning of a new chapter for the franchise.

Metal Gear Bluepoint

Rumors of a remake of the 1998 epic have been circulating for some time now. Although Silicon Knights already updated the classic with Twin Snakes, it was exclusive to the Gamecube meaning many missed out on the excellent rendition. Over the years, Bluepoint Games has proven themselves as master of the remake. With mammoth titles such as Demon’s Souls and Shadow of the Colossus under their belt, fans hope that they will give the same treatment to Metal Gear Solid.

Bluepoint Games stick firmly to the source material. While this means they offer a faithful representation, MGS may need a larger overhaul akin to Capcom’s stellar retelling of Resident Evil 2. Due to this, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence may be a more suitable candidate for a remake from the developer.

Metal Gear Rising: Re-Revengeance

PlatinumGames’ foray into the universe was remarkable. With their signature high-octane combat and over-the-top boss battles, they created a stunning adventure that further anchored Raiden’s reputation as a bonafide badass. While the game was well-received, there is no word of a sequel. As Kojima was only an Executive Producer on the game, Konami could easily allow Kenji Saito to lead the project and establish it as a new franchise. Will Konami allow the cyborg ninja to lead birthday celebrations and offer fans a surprise slice of cake?

Uncharted Territories

Metal Gear includes an array of an incredible cast of characters. Due to this, I would love to see new stories led by auteurs that feature icons from the series. Neil Druckmann could offer a poignant tale that explores the origins of The Boss; Joseph Fares could investigate the trauma that imbues Grey Fox and Arnt Jensen could delve into Les Enfants Terribles. While this may divide fans, I think it would be great to see pioneers pay homage to one of the greatest in the medium by exploring his characters in their own way.

Metal Gear Solid 6

What we all want is for Hideo to return to the series, however, this only seems likely if Konami sells the rights to the IP or mends the relationship and allows Kojima Productions to develop it. I would hate to see a new iteration without Kojima’s involvement. He is so synonymous with the franchise that fans would most likely ignore any mainline release without him. So, getting the genius himself back in the director’s chair would be the ultimate way to celebrate the 35th anniversary.

There are plenty of ways for Konami to mark the anniversary of one of the most important games in history. Will they surprise us all and leap from the cardboard box to announce a new game? Do you hope they stealth release a remake of a classic? Or will they just disappoint us with some lacklustre title and a new pachinko machine?

Another F-Zero Game Is Possible, Says Ex Nintendo of America Boss https://cogconnected.com/2022/05/another-f-zero-game-possible/ Sun, 15 May 2022 02:40:27 +0000 https://cogconnected.com/?p=309533 Former Nintendo of America executive Reggie Fils-Aime thinks that the F-Zero franchise has not been abandoned.

F-Zero Devs Just Need at Least One Innovative Idea for a Comeback

The F-Zero franchise has not seen any new content for almost 20 years now. Still, despite this fact, former Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime believes that the franchise is not dead.

For almost two decades, die-hard F-Zero fans have been hoping for news of a revival to the series. According to Fils-Aime, the team behind the classic game was just experimenting with ideas that they could apply to its new-gen version.

another f-zero game possible

During my tenure, Nintendo developers were always experimenting with different gameplay styles, always thinking about where a unique experience could be applied back,” he said during an interview. “Either to an existing franchise or maybe creating a new franchise.”

It would seem that devs have not been able to come up with an innovative idea that will appropriately justify why they decided to bring back the classic racing series. Fils-Aime believes that things are not over for the franchise quite just yet.

My bet is that somewhere in the Kyoto development centers, some developer is playing around with an idea that might be applied to F-Zero,” he continued. “It is never a situation, at least in my experience, where the company makes a conscious decision not to continue supporting X-Y-Z franchise.”

Apparently, Fils-Aime’s comments are not the first to hint at an F-Zero comeback. Just last year, Nintendo vet Takaya Imamura shared that he never assumed the franchise was dead. However, he did admit that it was the type of series that was challenging to bring back. Imamura was the genius behind F-Zero’s character and vehicle design.

Of course, I have thought about it many times,” Imamura said. “Without a grand new idea, it is hard to bring it back.

10 Video Games with Badass Bunnies https://cogconnected.com/feature/10-video-games-with-badass-bunnies/ Sun, 17 Apr 2022 14:00:46 +0000 https://cogconnected.com/?post_type=feature&p=307182 Enjoy the Easter period with a host of chocolate eggs and a list of video games that feature some badass bunnies.

These Bunnies Kick-Ass

Every year, people around the world enjoy the Easter period by devouring an absurd number of chocolate eggs. Although this is a great activity, gamers still need something to play with whilst stuffing their faces full of cocoa goodness. To keep with the theme, I have compiled a list of video games that feature some badass bunnies. Check them out below.

Sam and Max Save the World – Max

Private investigators, Sam and Max, are a hilarious duo that solve mysteries in wonderful point-and-click adventures by Telltale Games. Max is a wise guy that spews edgy and witty quips at any given opportunity. Contrasting his innocent appearance, his use of vulgar language helps to make him an iconic rabbit in Video games.

Pokémon Sword and Shield – Scorbunny

The Pokémon series has a fluffle of rabbits, however, one leaps higher than its cute counterparts: Scorbunny. With its slick soccer theme, the fiery sporting bunny is a great starter character in the monster collection series. When evolved to Cinderace, it can launch burning balls into the face of its foe–total badass.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle – Rabbid Peach

The bizarre crossover of Mario and Rabbids spawned one of the greatest tactical games in the medium. In addition to this, it also introduced several rabbid versions of classic characters. Standing out from the crowd is Rabbid Peach. Full of confidence and sass, she is often pictured taking selfies. Not only is she thoroughly amusing, injecting life and personality into the chaotic Rabbids, but she is also a brilliant defensive character that should be on any team.

F.I.S.T.: Forged In Shadow Torch – Rayton

Hopping away from the adorable representation that games tend to portray the long-eared mammals with is Rayton. He is a cynical war veteran who fights against government control. Armed with a gigantic metal arm, you will smash your way through numerous enemies in a stunning Metroidvania that is a must for fans of the genre.

Cuphead – Hopus Pocus

Rabbits and magic have been linked since Louis Comte pulled one out of a hat. Cuphead takes this idea and turns it into a memorable but also easily missable boss fight on space 5 of the King Dice sequence. With a crazed look in his eyes and a manic grin, you will have to avoid the number of tricky projectiles Hopus Pocus will throw at you. Even though this is buried in another fight, it features a stunning battle that celebrates 1930s culture and cartoons.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past – Bunny Link

Nestled within this masterpiece is the cute, defenceless, pink bunny version of Link. If you enter the Dark World without the Moon Pearl, you transform into this fluffy iteration of the Hylian hero. While this doesn’t offer much in terms of gameplay, it’s a strange and unforgettable segment in one of the greatest franchises in video games.

Fire Emblem: Awakening – Panne and Yarne

The Taguel double act are the last remaining members of the shape-shifting race. Full of personality, Yarne and Panne contrast one another perfectly. Timid and brave, aloof and grounded, their personality characteristics clash hilariously. However, they are both lethal bunnies on the battlefield.

Star Fox 64 – Peppy Hare

A veteran in flight navigation, Peppy helps guide Fox McCloud on his many adventures. While he is most known for shouting, “Do a barrel roll!” to the pilot, his experience is invaluable. Without this wily ol’ hare, we wouldn’t have the countless barrel roll memes that flood the internet. Due to that, he deserves a spot on our list.

Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit – Prince Ash

Okay, the game itself is average but the protagonist is a bonafide badass. This undead, buzzsaw-wielding bunny dwells in hell. Full of humor, Prince Ash’s self-absorbed personality shines during this amusing adventure.

Kaze and the Wild Masks – Kaze

Taking inspiration from 90s cartoons and Donkey Kong, Kaze and the Wild Masks is a magical mash-up of nostalgia. Leading the charge is Kaze, a blue rabbit reminiscent of Tiny Toons’ Buster Bunny. With the ability to don different Masks, she can take to the air, cut through the sea, and sprint relentlessly through perfectly plotted levels. With a ton of options in her arsenal, Kaze can kick the butt of anything that gets in her way.

What do you think about our list? Did we miss your favorite game that stars a rabbit? Whilst you are here, why not check out our Top 10 Video Game Rabbits list here? Let us know in the comments below or on Facebook or Twitter.

Glover Re-release Faces Criticism From Fans of the Original https://cogconnected.com/2022/03/glover-re-release-criticism/ Mon, 07 Mar 2022 23:08:28 +0000 https://cogconnected.com/?p=304427 Piko Interactive is working on a re-release of the 1998 Glover, though their practices have inspired anger among the fans.

I’m a Glover, Not a Fighter

The 1998 platformer Glover was a cult-classic. In the era of Super Mario 64, Banjo Kazooie, Donkey Kong 64, and Conker’s Bad Fur Day, the 3D platformer’s bases were pretty much covered. Still, there are those who have fond memories of the game today.

The game is about a world that is facing destruction after a wizard’s mishap. Now, his two magic gloves (Glover and Glovel) are at odds as one tries to save it and the other destroys it. You know, typical wizard stuff.

Glover

Glover was published by Hasbro Interactive and developed by Interactive Studios. Three years after it was released, Hasbro Interactive became defunct, a fate shared by Interactive Studios in 2013. The game became lost as abandonware, until Piko Interactive scooped up the IP.

Piko Interactive has a history of buying IPs, then re-releasing games. Since they become the new owners of these properties, they file suits to have ROMs removed. This practice has angered many fans and sparked debate over who best preserves old games: fans or owners? A recent tweet Piko Interactive suggested that ROMs do not hold the historic value that purists believe.

There is currently no solid release date for the re-release of Glover. The original supporting platforms included Nintendo 64, PC, and PlayStation.

Would you like to see Glover on modern consoles? Let us know in the comments below.

First Level Since 1994

For the first time since 1994, John Romero has given DOOM II fans a new level. The level is a product to provide support to Ukraine. 100% of the proceeds from the level will go to Red Cross and the UN Central Emergency Response Fund. A tweet from Romero provides a statement about the new level.

The new level is available on Romero’s website for around $7. The level, whose title is, One Humanity is the first DOOM II level in 28 years and features all of the DOOM graphics and nostalgia fans remember. Importantly, in order to play the level, players must have an original copy of DOOM II as well as a modern source port for the game.

“There were no costs associated with this. 100% of every cent is going to the relief agencies. So, revenue == proceeds.” Says Romero in a response to a Twitter comment saying how great it would be for 100% of the revenue to go Ukraine.

Equally important to note, the new DOOM II level is the latest in the video game world’s show of support for the ongoing war in Ukraine. For instance, last week Polish studio 11 Bit Studios made an initiative with their own game, This War of Mine. Romero’s new level comes as the Russian Invasion of Ukraine continues to intensify.
