Metal: Hellsinger VR

The Metal: Hellsinger VR Demo is a collaborative effort from game developers Lab42 and The Outsiders that takes the flat version of the game from 2022 and makes it virtual. Now your journey through hell blasting away demons in rhythm to metal music, you’ll be doing it full scale virtual reality.

You can get a taste of the game right now on Steam as the game devs have released a demo which includes the first two levels. The VR version of the game is more than just a straight port of the game. The devs are committed to using the new gameplay mechanics available in virtual reality.

Every weapon is retooled for maximum effect in VR. Each weapon will feel different to use. The developers have created a new hub dubbed The Unknown’s Lair for players to regroup and strategize before tackling the next level. The hub will also contain options for setting gameplay options as well as exploring lore. In keeping with the lair motif, the options take the form of arcane volumes.

Also available in the hub is weapon and level selection. Additionally, you can review your statistics. All of these functions are designed to work in a VR manner where you can reach and touch or grab items. The game devs are taking great pains to include a host of VR options that in today’s VR game market should be standard.

Hellacious Options

So there will be options for vignettes, snap/continuous turning, turning speed adjustment, head vs hand directional movement and more. For the game in particular because it is a rhythm based game, there will be options for beat indicator, aim assist, automatic/manual weapon pumping and height calibration.

Graphically, the game looks impressive when played on my Quest 2 using a AMD 7800 XT GPU. (Can’t wait to try this when the PC adapter for the PSVR 2 becomes available in August). The level design is such that even though the game is arena based, each stage visually flows into the next one. This approach gives a great feeling of more space than there actually is. The game depicts the hellish environments in an impressive array of colors, with the reds especially popping out.

The reds are notable because some enemies are winged demons that pulse internally with the red in time to the music. This provides a great visual aid when to time your attacks for maximum impact. From the levels available in the demo, there is a decent variety of enemy types that evoke, but do not copy, the Doom enemies.

One option available is a Beat Indicator, which is a reticule that overlays an enemy. It shows you the optimum moment to attack for optimal damage. String together enough maximum hits and you will get a prompt for a finishing attack. This is a combination dash and slash attack where you put down an enemy using your skull handled sword, the Terminus.

Metal: Hellsinger Weapons

Other included weapons in the demo are the Paz, a sentient skull that acts as a pistol. For the shotgun equivalent you have the Persephone, better known as the Queen of Death. For two handed firepower, there are the Hounds, Cerberus and Orthrus. The designers gave each weapon a demonic overall and they look very cool.

Two of the eight ‘hells’ are available in the demo and feature some of the music, which is a vital aspect of the game. For the first level, Voke, there are two songs by Mikael Stanne of Dark Tranquillity. Stanne along with Alissa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy each have a song on the second level, Stygia.

Music is a vital part of the game, and they have collected an impressive array of metal talent. The soundtrack includes work from such artists as the composer duo, Two Feathers plus vocalists like Serj Tankian from System of a Down, Matt Heady from Trivium, and Randy Blythe from Lamb of God.

As you move through a level, the music becomes more layered. It moves from simple rhythmic beats to add more instrumentation and then vocals. This is a great approach, as it heightens the tension as the enemies and action ratchet up.

Coming 2024

A specific release date has not revealed yet beyond sometime in 2024. Metal: Hellsinger will include most of the content from the original game except for the Leviathan mode. The game will officially support the Quest 2, Quest 3, PSVR 2, HTC Vive and Quest Pro. There will be DLC to purchase upon game launch.

Metal: Hellsinger comes across as a cross between Pistol Whip and Hellsweeper, both great VR games in their own right. Considering the positive reaction the flat game has received and what the demo shows, Metal: Hellsinger VR is ready to make a fun entry in the VR Rhythm game genre.

VR Games Coming In 2024

It’s been a tumultuous 2024 for the gaming world. Playstation and XBox are into their third year with their latest console and both are struggling on several fronts. Tech-wise there have been only a handful of games available to flex with. Post Covid, the gaming market is struggling with lessened demand and fewer big title releases.

No area of the gaming market has been hit as hard as VR. A niche market at best, any downturn in the gaming market hits VR even more so. Still, not all is lost. There are some great VR games coming, most of them multi-plat.

On that positive note, here is a list of ten VR Games either hoped for or coming out this year or shortly afterwards. Some of them look to be top notch releases that could generate excitement that could cross over into the mainstream gaming consciousness.

VR Games Hopefuls:

10. Half Life Alyx on PSVR 2

Yeah, yeah. I know. This one is a pipe dream. With the PSVR 2 being out more than a year, the chances of this are near nil. But one can still dream, right?

9. Astrobot

The lack of any Astrobot game since the PS5 launched is a real head scratcher. Especially, after how well received the included Astro’s Playroom game with the PS5 was. While rumors and rumblings about an Astrobot game coming out this year exist, Sony has been mum. If there is a new game, Sony should release a version that supports both flat and VR modes.

VR Games Upcoming:

8. F1 2024 – PCVR

EA F1 games have recently added PCVR support post launch but the implementation has been a bit wonky. This year’s game will be launching with a VR mode from the get go. Here’s hoping EA has nailed the VR mode.
And hey! Some PSVR 2 love would be appreciated too!

7. Aces of Thunder – PSVR 2

VR is perfect for cockpit based games be it spaceships, cars, or planes. PSVR 2 lacks such games besides their flagship title – GT 7. A title which is more than enough reason to own a PSVR 2, BTW. So getting a multiplayer WWII flight game in VR is a big deal for the platform.

6. Alien: Rogue Incursion – Multiplatform

Horror is perfect for VR and the Alien franchise is perfect for both.
The VR version of Alien Isolation is a prime example of this. Little is know about the game to date and it likely won’t release till 2025.

5. Wanderer: The Fragments of Fate – Multiplatform

The original Wanderer released on PSVR 1 and was limited by the tech and the power of the platform. Despite all that, Wanderer still managed to dazzle with it’s scope and gameplay. Think of Quantum Leap mixed with Myst. Now with the power of the new platforms, Wanderer: The Fragments of Fate is more than just a re-imagining of the first game, it is the full realization.

4. Batman: Arkham Shadow – Meta

An announcement trailer just dropped recently so expect it next year. If it was being released this year, this would easily be in the number one or two spot. Because, hey it’s Batman!

3. Metro Awakening – Multiplatform

The Metro series is highly regarded and the dystopian setting is perfect for a VR game. This is a built from the ground up VR experience. Given the technical flair the previous games have shown, big things are expected from this game.

2. Arken Age – Multiplatform

Arken Age is a VR action-adventure game set in a terraformed fantasy world. This world is called the Bio-Chasm. Here you will engage in full physics combat using Arkenite infused swords & guns. The visuals are stunning and mixed combat of guns & swords look amazing.

1. Behemoth

This is the biggie! Pun intended. Brought to us by SkyDance – the makers of the excellent Saints & Sinners VR games. Excitement levels are high as the studio has been giving sneak peeks to VR influencers. They are under NDAs at the moment but rumblings say that could end the last week of May. Little is know about the game, except it looks gorgeous and there are whispers this is Shadows of the Colussus done in VR.

There you have it. An impressive list of VR games, indeed.

Madison VR Review – Control Crippled Creeps https://cogconnected.com/review/madison-vr-review/ Tue, 21 May 2024 14:42:14 +0000 https://cogconnected.com/?post_type=review&p=351706 Smooth controls and an improved inventory system would make Madison VR a definite contender for the title of the scariest horror game ever.

Madison VR Review

Madison VR from Bloodious Games is the gaming direction VR enthusiasts have long championed for but rarely get. Most VR versions of flat games lay in the domain of modders. It is very rare for the studio to develop a virtual version of their flat game. So when Bloodious Games announced they were doing the VR version of Madison, VR gamers rejoiced.

Well, Madison VR is out, so how well did the transition from flat to VR go? Grab your Polaroid camera and let’s find out.

The original game came out July 2022 and the Science of Scare gave it the award as the “Scariest Game Of All Times”. That’s marketing gold. Fortunately for the game, when Madison scares, it really delivers the scares. No mean feat for a flat game, but if VR has proven one thing, when it comes to horror games, playing them in VR takes the scares to the next level.

Madison VR has been released on PC and PSVR 2. For the PSVR 2 version, Bloodious Games wisely tooled the game to run at a native 90 FPS and not at 60 FPS, reprojected to 120 FPS. This gives the game a very clean and sharp presentation. Most importantly, there is no ghosting. That sounds weird for a horror game, but the only ghosts in a VR Horror game should be those of a supernatural, not a technical nature.

Demons and Ghosts! Oh My!

Madison VR has ghosts, or demons, of the supernatural. Their presence is ambiguous though because the game is not just horror but psychological horror. In Madison VR, you play as Lucas from a family with a troubled history of mental illness and murder. You start the game in a darkened room with bloody hands and someone pounding at the door.

Turns out that someone is your father, and he blames you for something terrible. Something that harkens back to the mass murders that your grandmother is accused of. So right from the get go, you are in doubt about the sanity of Luca, the character you play. Does he suffer from the same affliction as his grandmother? This adds tension to everything you do and experience.

Darkness is a big part of Madison. The game takes place in your home and your goal is to escape. This means exploration and going into poorly lit rooms, corridors and crawl ways. In such circumstances, a flashlight, lantern, candle, cell phone, or lighter is available for navigation.

Madison gives a unique solution to light the way, which is the game’s defining gameplay mechanic, the flash and pictures of a Polaroid camera. The flash serves two purposes: it lights dark areas and also triggers events to happen. And it uses both to excellent effect to generate scares. Most of them jump scares. Some believe them to be the cheapest way to generate scares.

Madison VR Jump Scares

There is a definite validity to such a view as most jump scares are for shock value. They are in your face and don’t have any lasting impact on the story. On the flip side, they are a proven method to build tension. The best jump scares are those that happen at the edge of your vision. A fleeting glimpse of something evil, which you are not sure what it is, stays with you.

Madison VR employs a mixture of the two and those quick flash moments are definitely the ones that unsettle the player more. One of my favorite ones is someone, or something, flits across the screen too fast for you to make out. Beyond the impression, it is not human. Very scary.

Another area which Madison excels is in the 3D audio. As always, sound is so important in horror games, especially in interior spaces such as the house you want to escape from. Distant creaks, the rain pattering on windows, the wind howling outside, and a telephone ringing in another room are all conveyed perfectly. They increase in volume and location the closer you get to them, as they would in real life.

The game creates a wonderful eerie atmosphere on the sonic and graphical fronts. So it’s more than a shame, Madison VR stumbles on the control and inventory front. Let’s deal with the controls first. While clumsy and awkward, you can at least adapt to them. Object interaction is unnecessarily clunky. Opening doors and drawers are too finicky, but you learn to deal with them. Going down a ladder is too obtuse. Rather than grab the first rung, as in most other VR games, you have to interact with a position in front of the ladder.

Control Clunkiness

Where Madison VR really stumbles is with the inventory system. When you pick up an object, you must place it in your backpack. Until you place the object in your backpack, you cannot move. This means an immersion breaking mechanic of constantly calling up the inventory screen. Most frustrating, especially when the object in question is to be used in the same room.

There are two other inventory design decisions that annoy. The first is you can only carry ten items. A rather small number. So if you are at the limit, then you must go to one of the safes and store excess inventory there. The other more irritating inventory mechanic is how you store items. They scroll in front of your field of view horizontally, like bullets in a gun cylinder. To select an object, it must be directly in front of you. As often happens, the object you want is either half way around or, even worse, just off screen so you have rotate through all the items to get to the one you need.

These two game mechanics not only break the immersion. They also let some of the dread built up leak out.

On the PSVR 2 platform, Madison VR makes good use of the tech available. Madison VR maximizes the use of the tech on the PSVR 2 platform. The HDR OLED screens deliver an image that seems almost photo-realistic. Plus those blacks! Oh my, those dark and dimly lit areas of the game are inky black.

Heavy Headset Haptics

The game also makes good use of the haptics. Of special note is how Madison VR uses the headset haptics. Sometimes your character is under extreme mental duress. So the game punctuates those moments beautifully by sending strong pulses to your head. It really works to unnerve you.

Many people claim that Madison VR is the scariest horror game ever. Such a claim, scientifically backed or not, still depends on you. As a veteran of many a horror game, it is certainly in the discussion. Smooth controls and an improved inventory system would make Madison VR a definite contender for the title of the scariest horror game ever.

Immersive Skyrim Modifications Elevate Virtual Reality Experience

A dedicated fan of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, known as GingasVR, has taken their virtual reality (VR) setup to the next level by integrating two haptic feedback suits, adding an unparalleled level of realism and immersion to their gaming experience.

GingasVR, showcased on X/Twitter and reported by GamesRadar, has expanded their already extensive VR rig, comprising an HTC Vive headset, three Vive trackers, microphones, face trackers, and an array of mods. The latest additions include an OWO haptic feedback suit and a haptic feedback vest, complemented by smart plugs connected to fans.

The OWO suit delivers electric shocks to simulate in-game damage, while the vest provides vibrations for sensations like water and other environmental effects. Temperature changes are replicated through the fans, activating in colder regions of Skyrim and deactivating in warmer areas.

Skyrim

In a demonstration video, GingasVR tests the pain simulation against various Skyrim inhabitants, including Whiterun residents, mages, and even a dragon. Utilizing mods like OpenAI for adaptive dialogue and immersive interactions, coupled with a microphone setup and speech projection mod, GingasVR achieves lifelike exchanges with NPCs.

As fans await The Elder Scrolls 6, GingasVR’s inventive modifications exemplify the enduring appeal of Skyrim, inspiring players to discover new ways to engage with the beloved title. Recent player endeavors, such as accumulating bounties by “killing everything” and recreating Skyrim in different games, underscore the game’s lasting impact even after 12 years since its release.

The enduring allure of Skyrim is palpable, as players continue to revisit their original characters on legacy consoles, underscoring the profound impact of Bethesda’s seminal RPG on gaming culture. Since its initial release in 2011, Skyrim has captivated players with its expansive open world, rich lore, and boundless opportunities for exploration and adventure.

For many gamers, Skyrim represents a cherished part of their gaming journey, evoking nostalgia and fond memories of epic quests, memorable encounters, and personalized adventures. The game’s immersive world and countless quests offer endless replay value, enticing players to return time and again to the snowy peaks of the province of Skyrim.

Powerwash Simulator – Warhammer 40K DLC

Powerwash Simulator has proven through its previous DLCs that the creators at FuturLabs are having just as much fun as their player base. Stepping away from the backyard, Tomb-Raiding mansions, and pineapples under the sea, the latest addition to Powerwash Simulator offers the epitome of muck and grime. Warhammer 40K is not a family-friendly universe. It defines the very word “grimdark.” Choosing this as the next location to go for a relaxing romp with a powerwasher is a fascinating decision that ultimately pays off.

The first thing players will notice when jumping into the Warhammer 40K DLC is the monumental scope of your location. The Tomb Raider DLC gave us faithful recreations of Croft Manor. Back to the Future acknowledges it was a film set. This, however, doubles down on the immersion. You are not the plucky powerwasher who was hired to clean up. Instead, you are a Techpriest of the Adeptus Mechanicus. You have been conscripted into the service of the Machine God to restore and cleanse the machines of war. Everything about this premise is executed to perfection and suddenly you’re playing a different game entirely.

All five stages of this DLC take place on a Forge World, a planet controlled by the Adeptus Mechanicus in service of the Imperium. It is an incredibly detailed, explorable space. The level is filled with gothic architecture and an abundance of burning candles for praising the Omnissiah. It even features enormous, cathedral-like windows to peer out into the depths of space.

A Different Kind of Cleansing in Warhammer 40K

While playing the Warhammer 40K DLC, your usual scrubs have been replaced with the garb of a Techpriest. It’s a great detail, but sadly only one you’ll notice in multiplayer. I did not see the suit as a purchaseable option in the store which is a bit of a missed opportunity; Who doesn’t want to see a Techpriest cleaning the family’s station wagon? Even making it unlockable after completing the DLC would be a fantastic reward. Your trusty powerwasher is now the MKII Aqua-Santica Arquebus to keep the theming in line. It’s a beautiful and clever touch. It too, however, is restricted to the Warhammer 40K stages.

There are a lot of machines of war to choose from for this DLC. There is no shortage of options from the 41st millennium that might need cleansing. When it was announced, I thought we might even see something like Roboute Guilliman’s armor or perhaps the Golden Throne itself. What we have are five compelling and engaging stages that unfortunately come with a few minor missteps.

The Omnissiah Likes It Really, Really Shiny

The first stage is a great way to kick things off. The Ultramarine Land Raider is not only a large and imposing piece of machinery, but the details in the dirt and the mud add so much: bootprints, xeno-blood spatter, claw marks. It engages the player with the lore of Warhammer 40K by showing rather than telling. It’s a straightforward enough stage to complete easily and get the player hyped up for the next piece.

Stage two, the Dark Angel’s Dreadnought, is a logical escalation. Who doesn’t want to check out one of the series’ classic mechs? It’s an imposing model, tucked away in the corner of the stage. You’ll need to use the extra ladders built into the stage to scrub the model clean, but it’s worth it. This presented my first issue; While the Dark Angels tend to use a dark green color scheme, the Dreadnought uses more yellow tones. This would be fine, however, the illumination to show any dirt you missed also happens to pulse in yellow. It made it bothersome to find those pesky missing corners, but not enough to hamper the experience.

Beautiful Machines Brought To Life

This led to stage three and the moment I felt my shoulders slump. The Astra Militarum doesn’t get as much love as the Astartes, so it is nice to see them get featured. Giving us a tank, however – something with a significantly similar build to the Ultramarine Land Raider but smaller – felt more like filler than anything else. The details of the tank are great. Tools strapped in place, the gun turret, the bootprints at the manned gun on top. Love and care have been put into designing the stage, but it feels too familiar after already cleaning the Land Raider. I find myself playing to finish and move on, not to enjoy the gameplay.

With all that said, you’ll understand why stage four – the House Hawkshroud Imperial Knight – manages to be both satisfying yet sigh-worthy experiences. Here we have another mech. One so incredibly huge that the stage has built-in multi-tiered scaffolding to attempt to clean it from head to toe. While the Dreadnought was an engaging challenge, the Knight felt tedious. The muck was engrained so deeply into the inner workings of the Knight that you need to climb up and under the plating to get to it all. It also doesn’t help that the armor is, yet again, a yellow tone similar to that of the highlight to find all the dirt.

Yellow Armor Plating Makes For Dreary Cleaning

It’s an awe-inspiring model to see. It was a step up in terms of challenge from the Dreadnought, but it ultimately felt like more of the same. Why couldn’t it be from another Chapter? There are plenty of options to choose from in Warhammer 40K that wouldn’t make us have to repeat the ‘where is the dirt?‘ issues from blending in with the yellow plating.

With two sets of similar levels, the final stage would have to be something to change it up. In each of the previous Powerwash Simulator DLCs, the final stage is always the largest and most challenging. The Warhammer 40K DLC does not disappoint, capping things off with a Blood Angels Thunderhawk. When the stage loaded, I found myself wandering up and down the platform just marveling at the size of it. I tried to find a place to start, somewhere to begin tackling this beast before me. The unique shapes and paneling on the ship make it very easy to compartmentalize and break down into smaller, bite-size pieces. This is easily the most relaxing stage for me in the DLC. It’s a joy to restore it to its former glory and make it battle-ready.

You Are Adeptus Mechanicus

The previous Powerwash Simulator DLCs offered some unique features which surprised and delighted me. They set a new level of expectation in the hopes of something a little extra. The Invisible Car from the Spongebob Squarepants DLC was inspired. The Delorean and Doc’s Train from Back to the Future came to life at the end of the stage. I had hoped to see something like this in the Warhammer 40K stages. So much loving detail is put into the entire experience to make you feel like a Techpriest, but it just didn’t happen. The Land Raider could have sped off towards the giant hangar doors. The Knight could have powered up and taken a few steps. Little additions like that would go a long way to making the experience that much greater.

The Powerwash Simulator – Warhammer 40K DLC is a meticulously crafted experience that delivers more immersion than any of the previous DLCs. The level of detail in the environment, stages, and the very mud you cast away adds so much more to the presentation than one might expect. You can feel the love FuturLabs has for doing this property justice and it shows. Despite some minor grievances with similar stages and the use of colors that blend with the dirt guide, the Warhammer 40K DLC is another feather in the stellar cap of Powerwash Simulator’s DLC library.

Madison VR Preview

The suffocating atmosphere that resides in horror games puts you in a constant state of anxiousness as you question every step. While terrifying on the flat screen, this is amplified when transported to the virtual realm. The psychological horror, Madison, was released in 2022 and make its way to the PlayStation VR2 later this year. I was given the opportunity to step into the daunting house to discover the secrets that lie within. Will the transition to virtual reality elevate the experience, or will it fall short of delivering a chill?

You play as a Luca, a young man who has no memory of the horrific events that have recently occurred. As you progress through the sinister corridors of the mansion, you’ll discover snippets of information about the history of the family and the titular character, Madison. The game never takes you out of the action to deliver story elements, instead you learn from notes and audio files dotted around. While the story did lack clear direction in the opening moments, it was intriguing enough for me to want to learn more.

Dastardly Design

The ambiance is intoxicating and this is achieved through its stellar sound design and creepy setpieces. It definitely places you in a state of unease as the environment alters in the blink of an eye. A key tool throughout the short demo was the camera. You will use this to solve puzzles and progress further into the house. It’s a clever way to alter the perception of reality. An area may look a certain way but taking a quick snap might show something sinister.

Puzzles are at the forefront of the gameplay and often include environmental clues to help you progress. There were plenty of times when I encountered an obvious puzzle but could not solve it at that moment in time. This leads to backtracking through the house when you have the correct information to progress down a different path. This can lead to not knowing what to do next, however, due to the small areas, you shouldn’t get stuck for too long.

Virtual reality excels when you are able to interact with the world and Madison VR does include elements of this, however, its implementation is poor. Grabbing and manipulating items is awkward which stifles the experience. If you notice something is on the floor, you’ll have to either physically go to the ground or press crouch to then grab it. Including a quick pick-up option would vastly improve this aspect and allow you to immerse yourself in the world rather than fight to collect or move an item.

Careful When You Move

While the environment is packed with character, offering clues about what occurred, there are issues with the exploration of these locations. There is a constant stutter which is both offputting and potentially nauseating. It’s extremely disappointing as you have to struggle past this to enjoy the well-thought-out puzzles. In addition, other VR elements also need work. At one point, I had to descend into a well by climbing down broken ladders. I missed a rung and just floated mid-air which removed the notion of danger. There are definitely elements that need fixing before launch but there are creative ideas under the issues.

The Madison VR demo is full of intrigue. The story is demented and I’m interested to see if it can live up to its promising premise. I enjoyed the puzzles and the PT-influenced segments which adds a foreboding atmosphere to proceedings. Unfortunately, the VR elements are what really need working on before launch. Interacting with objects is frustrating and the stuttering breaks the immersion. As it stands, the game has potential but Bloodious Games has a lot to do to ensure this a smooth and scary experience when it launches later this month.

Bulletstorm VR Review

Bulletstorm VR from Game Developer Incuvo has landed on multiple platforms – PC, Quest, and PSVR 2. It is a port of the 2013 flat game and embodies the 1980s era of pop culture. It’s big, brash, and laced with testosterone expletive deleted software. The flat game is an on-rails shooter that rewards players for coming up with creative and gory kills.

It is a perfect vehicle for converting a flat game to VR. Unfortunately, said conversion leaves a more than a little bit to be desired on the non-PC platforms. This is a tough review to write because I’ve been an advocate for hybrid games where a VR Mode for Triple A games is the best path to pushing VR Gaming into mass adoption.

The PC version of Bulletstorm VR has been better received than the Quest and PSVR 2 releases. The situation mirrors the same reception that another VR Game from Incuvo, Green Hell, also received. It seems that there are different development teams for the various platforms and this is the reason proposed for the quality disparity.

Ugly Visuals

Whatever the reason for the quality differences, the version reviewed here is the PSVR 2 one, and it is disappointing. Ugly visuals and low-level textures saddle the game, which give it a blurry and jagged appearance. The game is also not properly optimized for PSVR 2. This results in dropped frames in larger areas. There are also constant loading screens within a stage that present themselves as immersion breaking black screens.

I have also experienced game crashes under different circumstances. One time it happened during a busy combat moment while the other crash came when the game displayed an in-game video clip.

Something to note about the video clips, Bulletstorm offers a great option to view the cutscenes in 3D. That is outstanding and should become a standard option for all flat games converted to VR. Sadly, the implementation of the 3D clips is subpar. They are low detail and blurry. Even worse, they are often blown out with blinding white levels.

There are other technical letdowns that affect the game’s personality. Another annoyance is the sound effects and music. They often do not synch to the game and they sound off in seemingly random matter. The disappointment doesn’t end there, though. Enemy AI is just plain terrible. They stand around or run up to you and do nothing. Oft times they also do not react to gunfire hits.

Unfinished Game

Finally, the game looks way worse than flat screen version and this is not only because of the low level textures. There has been no attempt made to employ dynamic lighting. All the shadows are static. These factors leave the environments flat and lifeless. This is really apparent if you compare the graphics of the flat version game to the VR version.

The game feels fundamentally unfinished and could use another six months of development and polish. Incuvo publicly acknowledged the myriad issues on Twitter. They pledged to document all the issues raised by gamers and promise to correct them in future patches.

We shall see. They made the same pledge about Green Hell and there has yet to be any significant corrections made on the non-PC versions.
All those issues aside, when things do work properly, the game can be fun to play. Remember, this is an over the top arcade shooter and the gameplay is fun but dated. You play as the protagonist, Grayson Hunt, in the first person. Hunt is a former elite mercenary who is now rogue. He is rogue because he learns his former commander, General Victor Sarrano, used him and his unit to kill innocent civilians instead of military targets.

Your ship crash lands on Stygia, which is described as a hell planet. The goal of the game is to make your way through hostile territory and confront the general. You’ll face multiple enemies and set pieces that are designed to allow you to wreak the most gruesome havoc possible.

Dual Wielding Damage

One of the new features of the VR version of the game is the ability to dual wield weapons, something not possible in the flat version. You’ll be able to tote a gun in one hand and an energy weapon called the Leash in the other. Using the two weapons in tandem allows for devastating destruction.

The weapons are the strongest part of the game, especially the Leash. Think of the Leash as a whip composed of energy. You can lasso enemies from quite a distance and fling them either towards you or into the environment. This allows you to impale enemies on spikes or barbed wire or electrical wire or throw them over the side of structures. You can also fling explosive barrels.

For close in combat, you can kick enemies either by stunning them or pushing them into environmental objects. The more inventive you are in dispatching enemies, the greater the reward. There is a Skill Kill Point List which you can reference as a guide for actions left for you to accomplish.

So there is a good basis from the flat game for having a lot of mindless fun. However, the issues mentioned above short-circuit any sustained enjoyment of playing the game. In its current state, on the PSVR 2, I cannot recommend this game. Your best bet if you want to play the game now is to get the PC version.

Fingers Crossed for Fixes

Hopefully, Incuvo will honor their pledge to fix the game and in short order. There are teasing moments of fun that shine through all the current issues with the game. If they ever get fixed, then Bulletstorm could still turn out to be a fun game.

Top 10 Hidden Gems of 2023

2023 has been a huge year for games. Titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Starfield, and even Hogwarts Legacy have captivated the industry completely. But what about the hidden gems that you may have missed while you were busy paying attention to the big releases? There’s a whole bunch of them we could mention but we narrowed it down to 10. So, with that, here are 10 amazing games you may have missed in 2023. These are games that scored well with critics and gamers alike but you probably haven’t even heard of them, or they just haven’t sold that well. And when they’re games this good, you might want to check them all out!

sony vs microsoft vs nintendo

10) Tin Hearts

Tin Hearts is a game built upon a simple premise: move all the tiny tin soldiers from their tin box to a little red door. It is so much more than that however. Each of the puzzles become more and more complex as you progress through the story and the narrative will surely be tugging on your heartstrings throughout. Like many of the other games on this list, Tin Hearts is whimsical, charming, and incredibly fun to play. It may feel repetitive as the game progresses, but with each level the complexities build. And the way Rogue Suns puts the pieces of the story together from the beginning to end is a masterpiece.

9) Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story

If you’re a League of Legends fan (and even if you’re not) this is the game for you. Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story explores the friendship between characters Nunu and Willump in a single-player platformer adventure in the Freljord. Take a journey through a treacherous environment as you play as Nunu, who’s searching for his mother with his best friend in tow. Together Nunu and Willump tell a cute and joyful narrative that’s sure to leave a great impression long after you’ve finished it.

8) Gunbrella

It might sound a little absurd to play through a game that centers around the use of a Gunbrella, a shotgun/umbrella mix. Interestingly, it’s actually a ton of fun! You play as a woodsman seeking revenge for the murder of his loved ones. Gunbrella is a neo-noir action-adventure title from Doinksoft that’s a refreshing mix of emotional, humorous and charming. The combat and traversal pull you in, yet the pixel art style, environment, and narrative keep you hooked. Jaz had this to say about his time with Gunbrella, “You can dart through the air or underwater, zip across cables and glide in the sky like a badass Mary Poppins. [T]he game is a delight from beginning to end and a must-play for fans of Metroidvanias.”

7) Moonstone Island

Moonstone Island, from Studio Supersoft, is a life-simulation game that’s every bit as comforting as it looks. You play as an aspiring alchemist in an open world with 100 different islands to explore. Not only is this a life-simulation game, but it also sprinkles in aspects from some of your favorite games too. There’s a bit of relationship building elements, creature collecting, deck-building and farming to dive into. It features a cozy soundtrack and a cutesy pixel art style that’s sure to make you feel at home. Moonstone Island warms you the same way that the first cup of tea on a cold fall day does. And who doesn’t love that?

6) The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood

Do you like witchcraft? What about Tarot cards? Even if you didn’t say yes to both of those questions, The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood might still very well be a game for you. It tells an immersive story of Fotuna, a fortune-teller witch who’s been exiled. You’ll craft a Tarot deck and try to regain your freedom. But be careful, every decision you make makes waves within the story and yes, they will have a direct impact on what happens later on! The art style, and the story are both incredible as well. Here’s what James had to say about The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood, “The game is touching, it hooked me, and creatively energized me. If you’re looking for more magic and mystery in your life, check out The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood. You won’t regret it.”

Kill It With Fire PSVR 2

Kill It With Fire from developer Casey Donnellan Games tailored a well balanced game to carry out its goal. The game has been around for a while. First, it has been released flat on every platform. Casey Donnellan Games have also done it in VR for the Meta and Steam platforms. Now it is making the leap to VR, and this review is for the PSVR 2 version. When you ask someone what creatures freak them out the most, the top two answers would be spiders and snakes. The phobia is so strong for each of them that there is a whole sub-genre of movies that pit characters against them.

Kill It With Fire knows this and adroitly balances between a game scary but also very fun. The game employs a cartoony, brightly colored visual style that softens the overall tone. How strongly a gamer reacts to stomping out spiders will totally depend on whether you instinctively abhor them.

Where the game tightens the tension, is with the sound design. The game’s music, which uses strident violins, enhances spider sightings. Its effect is excellent. When those violins kick in, you get a visceral reaction much the same as the music cues from movies such as Jaws or Psycho. It really invokes the sensation of a multi-legged creature scurrying across the floor. Or maybe up on you!

Keeping the fear factor in mind, Kill It With Fire, has an option to turn off that particular music cue if you find it too unnerving. Or maybe it becomes too irritating for you. Personally, I think it does the game a great disservice to turn that sound cue off. The music in the game is an upbeat, jazzy, spy type affair that is an excellent contrast to the spider music cue.

Scare Versus Comfort

Another comfort option is the one that deals with spiders that jump. If jumping spiders are too creepy for you to handle, you can disable it. Again, if you do so, it takes away an awesome creep factor, dare I say it, jump scares. If you can remind yourself that it’s only a game, then do your best to leave this setting enabled.

Let’s talk about the spiders. There are a variety of them, but they all look very similar to one another. The arachnids scale up in size as you gain better items to dispatch them. They move realistically as they scurry around the room. They crawl up, over, under, behind, and in between items.

The game starts in your typical bungalow style home with each room filled with interactive objects. All you have is a pair of gloves that come equipped with a spider radar to start with. The game prompts you to hunt out and kill spiders. Kill so many spiders and you open up more weapons. One of the first items is a hair spray flame thrower in honor of the game’s name.

The first levels are small. You move around a living room, a bathroom, and an office. Weaponless, you can use your fists or can pick up household items to squash spiders. It’s up to you to suss them out and dispatch them. You can use household items like TV remotes, speakers, game controllers to squash them. It makes some for tense moments as the spiders zip around the room and climb furniture to escape you.

Going Bigger

From there, everything gets progressively bigger: the stages, the weapons, and the spiders. Quickly enough, you power up enough, and killing spiders changes from being scary to becoming comedic. It’s an understandable evolution of the gameplay. The experience is meant to be fun instead of scary. Personally, I would have preferred the game to take the scary route and pay off with a Lord of the Rings – The Return of the King – Shelob level of confrontation.

As your array of weapons grow – flame thrower, guns, ninja stars, and bombs to name a few. With such an arsenal at your disposal, the difficulty level drops while the collateral damage increases dramatically. This is how the game combats the boredom that can arise with a repetitive gameplay loop in several ways.

First, the game is short. You can complete it in a handful of hours. Next, the game gives you objectives that require you to be creative with your kills. One example is you have to kill six spiders with a gun, but only with five bullets. You access the objectives through your Arachno-Gauntlet.

Finally, the art style and aesthetics of the game are geared towards a younger crowd. Ten to twelve-year-olds will have a blast with this game. This is not a deep game, but it ties in adroitly with the fear of spiders and the desire to get rid of them.

Kill It With Fire Is A Well Balanced Game

Casey Donnellan Games has tailored a well balanced game to carry out its goal. Kill It With Fire hits the right mix of fun and length. If you are an arachnophobe, this may not be the game for you. If the idea of squashing spiders for fun appeals to your darker side, this is the game for you. Kill It With Fire is available on all platforms, be it flat or VR. And now it has come to the PSVR 2. Happy Hunting!

Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord Review

I don’t think there’s a person alive who doesn’t dream of being part of the Ghostbusters. Since the 80s, the fab four has had a strong presence in the media with iconic movies and charming cartoons. Due to this, people from around the world have fantasised about tracking spectres with the PKE Meter and blasting spirits with the Proton Pack. While there have been virtual renditions of the group, the new VR adventure, Rise of the Ghost Lord, aims to fulfil that childhood wish with a level of immersion and interactivity never before experienced.

Tasked to collect the iconic kit from a spooky mansion, things quickly go from bad to worse. After accidentally unleashing the Ghost Lord upon the city of San Francisco, you must join an all new team of Ghostbusters to maintain order. The story itself is merely a premise for the multiplayer missions that will have you track down and capture spirits. Snippets of the narrative do occur from time to time, however, they are firmly in the background. Although I understand the focus on online gameplay, I would have liked a dedicated story mode that would allow you to play out that Ghostbusting dream.

We Got One

As you step into a mission, you have your PKE Meter, trap and Proton Pack to protect you from ghouls that roam the environment. Each of these is accessible from your waist and back which adds a nice sense of immersion. You will need to quickly jump between tools in order to find and capture entities.

Smaller ghosts will vaporize with a blast from your gun whereas larger ones require a bit more work. Your stream will weaken them, eventually allowing you to wrap your beam around the ghost. Similar to Luigi’s Mansion, you must now fight against the momentum of the creature and then guide it towards the trap to vanquish the foe. When against particularly large enemies, you can send a blast through your beam after you have built up heat in your Proton Pack from wrestling with a spirit. This can also result in your gun overheating and shutting down if you are not careful which adds a nice layer of strategy and creates an addictive loop that truly captures the feeling of busting ghosts.

There are a variety of spirits that feature unique attacks to keep you on your toes. The options available to traverse the area allow anyone to engage in the game. With smooth and click turning, full movement and teleportation, the game adds a ton of accessibility options to make this a comfortable experience. You’ll need to avoid being slimed in order to stay conscious, otherwise you’ll need a pal to give you a high five to get back in the fight. There doesn’t seem to be any penalty for getting knocked out as your team can keep reviving you without issue. While this ensures that all remain in the game, it removes tension from battles.

He Slimed Me

There are four different mission types that you can select from the HQ. Exorcism involves you and your team attempting to close a portal. You must scour the environment for three particular items, attach them to specific generators which will then unleash a huge demon for you to slay. On the Clock is a fast and hectic mode where you must fight against waves of  enemies to ensure that you can clear the area in the time permitted. In Giga Trap Retrieval you must find the correct location of the trap and try to carefully extract it. This can have a variety of effects which make the mode intense and an absolute thrill. Finally, there is Harvester which involves you repairing a machine and capturing ghosts. Each mode is enjoyable and distinct with friends but a little lonely when on your own.

Ghostbusters

After the completion of a mission, you’ll earn money which allows you to upgrade your equipment. This adds a steady progression to proceedings allowing you to improve your abilities for each subsequent mission. Unfortunately, the lack of story content means you’ll simply cycle through missions without feeling like you’re closing in on the Ghost Lord. Having more structure would have made it feel like you’re closing in on the antagonist rather than just completing random missions.

Who Ya Gonna Call?

The overall presentation is fantastic. Each map is impressive in scale and the cartoon aesthetic allows nDreams to make each ghost a vibrant treat. The visual style means that they can substitute detail with personality which works perfectly in VR. Characters are stylized and so are the environments which helps to transport you into the boots of the Ghostbusters. Musical cues further embed the franchise into the world and sound effects feel authentic.

Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord nails aspects of the experience but its lack of structure hinders the overall package. Using the famous tools from the franchise has never felt better and faithfully captures the feeling of being a Ghostbuster, however, the lack of focus on the narrative gives no context to missions. Fighting against spirits is a blast with friends but doesn’t hold up in single player. Although busting feels good, more attention to the story and its progression is needed.

Grotesque Games For Halloween

October marks the season for reveling in the macabre and mysterious. At this time of year, many are drawn to movies that delve into the horrors of gruesome tales, while others choose to immerse themselves in video games featuring chilling virtual landscapes. Being one of the best years in the history of the medium, 2023 has been the home to a host of instant classics. Due to this, I’m going to rifle through the plethora of games to uncover the absolute most terrifying titles of 2023 to play this Halloween.

Dead Space

Motive Studios took on the mammoth task of remaking Dead Space. While Capcom has proven time and time again that they can reimagine their iconic titles in a manner that not only stays true to the original but also improves on them, that level of confidence was absent for many for EA. However, all doubts dissipate the moment you step into the USG Ishimura. Chapters have been reworked to improve the pace of the game, Isaac gets a voice and the ‘Peeling System’ helps to make this the most gruesome release in the series to date.

Resident Evil 4

Speaking of remakes, how can you improve on perfection? Resident Evil 4 is the epitome of the series and Capcom recognises this. Whereas RE2 and RE3 are remade from the ground up, Resident Evil 4 maintains its excellent core and refines it to make this the best iteration of the game. Whether it’s your first or hundredth time, Resident Evil 4 is a must to get you in the mode for Halloween.

Bramble: The Mountain King

Nordic tales are twisted. The innocence merges with the demented and manifests a premise that is truly terrifying. Large portions of the game are calm and relaxing. This lures you into a false sense of security and amplifies the scares. A truly wonderful game that many overlooked during this congested year.

Lies of P

Who would have thought a game based on Pinocchio would make the list? The deranged minds at Neowiz Games and Round8 Studio have served up an intense take on a classic that will keep you on edge throughout. Its Bloodborne-style gameplay means that death lurks around every corner which makes each moment a thrill.

Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals

Although not crap your pants scary, Oxenfree 2 has an unsettling aura. The Stranger Things-esque presentation creates intrigue which will keep you hooked on the plot. So, if you’re looking for an unconventional game that delves into the weird then this is perfect for Halloween.

Bring Your Campaigns to Life With Dungeon Full Dive

The video game developer and publisher TxK Gaming Studios has released the early access release date trailer for Dungeon Full Dive. The game will finally be available on Steam on 23 October and it promises to deliver a unique immersive experience.

Dungeon Full Dive

Dungeon Full Dive is an adventure role-playing game for PC and VR. It also supports cross-plat between these two platforms. The game allows players to create and explore their own tabletop worlds with the help of a powerful map editor. They can create everything from simple dungeons to entire continents. Players can then explore their creations in the classic top-down perspective, or take control of individual characters and switch to first-person view.

In addition to exploring, players can also fight monsters, solve puzzles, and interact with NPCs. It includes a variety of different monsters, each with their own unique abilities. They will need to use all of their skills and abilities in order to defeat these monsters and survive.

One of the key features of the game is its immersion. The environment allows players to feel like they’re actually inside the dungeons they’re exploring. And the VR system makes them able to reach out and touch objects, swing swords, and cast spells with their own hands.

The game also has a deep social system. Players can team up with friends to explore dungeons together or join public games with other players. The game also has a built-in chat system, so players can communicate with each other easily.

Make sure to check out the video below.

VR Skater Review

VR Skater from DEFICIT Games brings a whole new immersion to skateboarding videogames never possible before. This game is as close as being on a real skateboard you can get and without the attendant scrapes and bruises. But how can a VR Game simulate an activity that is mostly controlled by one’s lower body? The answer is obvious, but the implementation is brilliant.

The answer is, of course, with your hands via the controller. Even flat games have done fairly well with the movement and control via a controller, but there is always a bit of a disconnect. VR Skater makes riding a skateboard more intuitive than ever before. With the PSVR 2’s motion controllers to control steering, speed, and braking more naturally than ever before.

In the initial setup for the game, you pick which hand – or foot – is your dominate one. Depending on which foot you put at the back of the board, you use the motion controller on that side for movement. To move, you swing your hand back and forth. The faster you swing, the faster you go. It may sound weird in theory, but it feels quite natural.

You use the other controller to steer. To activate steering, you hold down the main trigger and move your hand in the direction you wish to steer towards. Again, it sounds odd in theory, but in practice works well. With a bit of practice, you’ll sound be booting around areas just as naturally as you do in real life.

Hands Become Feet

To stop, you depress the trigger on the controller you are using for movement. These movement actions are the core of the VR Skater controls. Everything else builds off of them.

All the tricks are button or trigger presses or a combination of them combined with controller movement. Ollies and Nollies are controlled by the two buttons on either controller. The learning curve here is harder, which mirrors skateboarding in the real world. Beyond remembering which controller inputs control which action, you also have to learn how to time them.

The game has a decent set of tutorials to show the controls and provide a space for you to practice in. The sensation of movement and speed is wonderful and feels so real. Swinging your arm to speed up the board on level ground is cool. When you go down a ramp, it intensifies the sensation of speed.

As real as VR Skater feels, it has the advantage of taking the sport beyond what is physically safe – or possible. The rush you get when jumping between skyscrapers is fantastic. You’re also able to grind off objects not possible in the real world.

Static Stages

With the mention of real-world environments, VR Skater does a great job of depicting them. Be it streets, docks, subways, schools, industrial sites, or parking lots – rooftop or otherwise. There are seven in total. However, the locations are, unfortunately, static. There are no pedestrians, no cars, or any activity of any type. This emptiness is the biggest immersion breaker in the game.

The stages are also small and linear. There is no free roam mode, probably a concession needed to maintain the sense of motion in a virtual world. This means there are no ramps etc that allow you to reverse direction. The linearity is worth noting because free roam is a staple in 2D skateboarding games.

There are multiple paths in each of the twelve stages, which is essential to find the optimal paths for hitting the best scores.
As with all skateboarding games, VR Skater includes a sport appropriate soundtrack. The track list comprises a dozen tracks. It’s a mix of Indie and Rap Bands such as We Are The Union, Thousand Oaks, Suave Ski, SLACKRR, and Discrepancies, to name a few.

Skater Songs

You’ll be jamming to the tunes as you try to rack up scores via tricks and combos. All the staple skateboard moves await you to master them. Beyond the jumps – back and front, there is grinding, flips, and the more difficult tricks. As with all good game design, the controls are simple to learn but difficult to master.

VR Skater gameplay gets you to progress your skill level. There are a series of tutorials that introduce more progressively harder skills. Once you master the skill and progress beyond the tutorial, there are practice areas. In them, you can freewheel and practice with no penalties.

Another mode is called the Run. In this mode, there is a limit of a few bails – aka fails – before you can successfully complete a level. With enough practice, longer runs will be possible with more complicated combos. This is the way to getting higher scores and earn extra points.

To keep you motivated, there is an online leaderboard where you can measure yourself against players. Also, skateboard customization is available. Extras and experience points earned from the stages can buy new wheels and paint jobs for your board.

No Haptics

VR Skater introduces a totally unique control scheme that takes time to learn. The button and controller movement combinations will take one a lot of practice to pull off and memorize. You may find this to either be a worthy challenge or a task too demanding for the payoff.

DEFICIT Games previously released this game for PCVR, but the conversion to PSVR 2 does not take full advantage of the platform. Visually, the PS5 seems more than capable of displaying greater environmental detail and scope than what they offered.

Also, there is no use of the haptics from either the controller or the headset. The controls could be easier to learn with the judicious application of controller haptics. They could have made movement more immersive with use of the headset haptics too for when you land a jump, or grind, or, of course, when you bail.

Overall, VR Skater offers a unique skateboard experience, despite not taking full advantage of the power of the PSVR 2 and the PS5. If you are a big fan of Tony Hawk Skateboard videogames, VR Skater is definitely worth checking out.

Top 10 Video Games of 2023 – Mid Year Edition

We’re just over halfway through 2023 and already there have been some great games to sink our teeth into. Now we already knew this year would have some bangers considering the delays we’ve been hit with over the last couple of years but who would’ve guessed there’d be so, so many? Especially after so many amazing games dropped in 2022…like Elden Ring and Horizon Forbidden West. There are way more great titles out in 2023 than I can even fit on this list and there’s a good variety here. All of these wonderful games and we still have the likes of Mortal Kombat 1, Alan Wake 2, Starfield, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 to go! So what are the top 10 video games of 2023 so far? Let’s take a look.

10) Have a Nice Death

Have a Nice Death is a 2D action roguelike that lets you play as Death. It’s a quick hack n’ slash cutesy and charming game. With more than 70 different weapons to earn and choose from to create havoc amongst all your employees that ruined your vacation plans, this is exactly what you need after a bad day at the office. With a ton of different quirky characters to meet along the way and the difficulty meter ramping up as you work your way through the departments, Have a Nice Death is equal parts fun and challenging. Plus, who doesn’t love a little kick-ass character to fall in love with along the way?

Have A Nice Death Review

9) Fire Emblem Engage

Fire Emblem is a franchise that has spanned many years with a total of 17 games! The latest in the franchise is none other than Fire Emblem Engage. Here you must work together with other heroes to take down the Fell Dragon and bring peace back to Elyos. Along the way, you’ll collect Emblem Rings which will help you summon heroes like Celica or Martha and show this turn-based game who’s boss. The story may not be all that but the mechanics, intense battles, and art style are really where Fire Emblem Engage shines. Here’s what James had to say about it, “Overall, Fire Emblem Engage is an excellent entry in the franchise. You won’t want to miss this one.”

8) Dredge

Dredge is a single-player fishing adventure that will absolutely reel you in. Though it’s pretty straightforward – fish, sell your catch, upgrade your boat, rinse and repeat – there’s a whole lot more to discover in the depths of the water. You’ll gain new abilities as you find hidden treasure and complete quests along the way. But the water isn’t always so calm and serene. There’s danger everywhere you turn, especially when you go fishing at night. Dredge is colorful and its sound design is exactly what you would hope from a seafaring horror-esque experience. It’s no wonder it averages over 82% across all platforms on Metacritic!

7) Humanity

It’s no secret how much the gaming community loved Blue Twelve Studios’ cat adventure Stray last year. Humanity, from tha LTD, is a puzzle-action game that features a Shiba Inu at its core and yes it’s extremely fun! You play as a dog and command massive crowds of mindless people to complete all 90 story-mode stages. Humanity is a visual masterpiece that’s equal parts calming and rewarding. The stylish game design comes even more alive when you play it in VR. Seriously, don’t sleep on this one. After all, who doesn’t want to play as a dog helping the masses move through complex puzzles one by one? Here’s what Jaz has to say about Humanity, “Humanity is weird and wonderful. Like all great puzzlers, its premise is simple and the challenge steadily grows. THA Limited continues to innovate throughout the entirety of the game and manages to couple each triumph with jubilation.”

6) Hi-Fi Rush

If you’ve ever played a music-based game before and loved it, Hi-Fi Rush is absolutely a game for you. It’s similar to Metal: Hellsinger in its rhythm combat but in a more family-friendly way. The world comes alive with each hard-hitting combination of attacks and it’ll pull you in bit by bit. Tap or hum along with the mixtape of original music with songs from the likes of The Prodigy, The Joy Formidable, and Nine Inch Nails. Team up with colorful characters and kick some comic book-looking ass. You’re here for a fun time and a long time with Hi-Fi Rush!

Hi-Fi Rush

Read through to page 2 for the top 5 best games of 2023 so far…

5) Resident Evil 4 Remake

The Resident Evil franchise does survival horror so incredibly well. Capcom has breathed new life into the 2005 original, revitalizing Resident Evil 4 for a slew of new and old fans alike. Resident Evil 4 features modernized gameplay, crisp detailed graphics, and a reimagined storyline, all while keeping the original spirit of the game. Will you be able to bring the President’s daughter home in one piece or will you crumble under the terror and pressure of it all? Resident Evil 4 is gruesome, horrific, and everything you want from the franchise. Jump in with two feet before you’re scared half to death!

4) Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

Respawn dropped Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order four years ago and now they’re back with an even better sequel. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a follow-up story for Cal that takes place 5 years after the original, spans multiple galaxies, and is totally action-packed. It features new and interesting characters, expanded customization options, and crazy good combat and traversal. It’s also insanely gorgeous. Twist those lightsabers around and split the Empire in half! The Star Wars universe is truly at its best here. Plain and simple, it’s a damn good time and you shouldn’t miss it. Garrett says, “Jedi Survivor is the definitive Jedi video game experience.”

3) Hogwarts Legacy

Despite the controversy surrounding Hogwarts Legacy, it has done incredibly well. It has received high praise from fans and critics alike. This is showcased by its average Metacritic score of 85. It has a unique story, quirky and unique characters to fall in love with and it takes place well before all the events fans of the Wizarding World have come to know and love. With Hogwarts Legacy you will truly get to pick your own adventure in the 1800s, taking on Dark Wizards, goblins, trolls, and more along the way. And be sure to learn how to use numerous spells and the importance of Herbology and tending to magical beasts; they just might give you the upper hand in any battle. There are also a ton of little easter eggs and nods to the Harry Potter franchise as a whole. It’s honestly a bit like a love letter to the fans of the franchise. Accio Hogwarts Legacy!

2) Diablo 4

Diablo IV is an action RPG from Blizzard that offers a compelling story, badass combat, and interesting characters. It’s a stunning visual masterpiece and an addictive stroll through dark dungeons. The game design is going to hook you regardless of whether you’re a fan of the previous titles of the franchise and the sheer amount of content is going to keep you engaged until the very end. Here’s what Mark had to say about it, “Diablo IV is the true successor to the second game, returning the franchise to its dark, gothic roots with a wild, operatic narrative and bold characters…With off-the-charts production values and compelling characters and combat, Diablo IV is just about as good as the genre can get.”

1) The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Unsurprisingly The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is in the top spot for the best game of 2023 so far. It’s a beautiful game that’s creative, inventive, and everything you would want from an open-world action-adventure game. This will be even more impressive if you grew up playing classic Zelda games. There’s a huge world to discover and a bunch of cool new abilities to learn while exploring Hyrule and the skies above. Breath of the Wild was an amazing game and Nintendo has managed to make a sequel of equal proportions! Back in 2017, we gave Breath of the Wild a rare score of 100 and we’ve done the same with Tears of the Kingdom. If that doesn’t convince you this is a must-buy I’m not sure what will.

What do you think about our list? Which ones have you played this year? Are there any other games you thought should’ve made the list? Let us know in the comments below or on Facebook or Twitter!

There are as many train simulators as there are railway routes in America. It’s true, don’t check. Derail Valley has been grinding the train sim game for over four years now. It’s latest update just launched earlier this month with the Simulator Update.

This is somewhat of a UI overhaul for the game. It is actually the second overhaul, the first one being the Overhauled update. Derail Train was primarily a VR game, but supports keyboard mode. Instead of just controlling the train and its functions, you are really controlling the conductor controlling the train. It is another layer of immersion and complexity.

Derail Valley

As far as the environmental effects go, new details include water and smoke effects, lighting from the cities and trains, as well as weather and day/night cycles. There are also new locomotives and different hydraulic, electric, and mechanical systems to learn and operate.

Players have almost complete control over their trains. You have to properly couple all the couplings, attach all the right cables, and flip all the right levers. If you do not, well… they don’t call it Derail Valley for nothing. You are able to create some pretty spectacular accidents.

Derail Valley is available on PC, supports VR and keyboard mode.

Have you tried out this train driving sim? Let us know in the comments below.

Tin Hearts Review – A Beautiful & Charming Journey https://cogconnected.com/review/tin-hearts-review/ Tue, 16 May 2023 13:17:36 +0000 https://cogconnected.com/?post_type=review&p=330133 Tin Hearts, from Rogue Sun, is a delightful and emotional puzzler with cute tiny tin soldiers at its core. It’s a whole lot more than meets the eye however.

Tin Hearts Review

Back in March I got to sink my teeth into the first little bit of Tin Hearts by Rogue Sun. I originally played on the PC and found it delightfully magical and whimsical. Now, I’ve gotten a chance to play through the entire game on PS5. Tin Hearts is everything I expected it to be and more. There’s a couple more twists and turns I wasn’t quite ready for and the puzzles increase in difficulty and complexity as the narrative continues on. What I originally thought was magical and whimsy in a bottle is actually a heart wrenching story about a toy maker and his family told through these tiny soldiers.

Tin Hearts is a puzzle adventure game that offers both third-person and first-person views. The puzzles are wrapped in a thoughtful narrative that focuses on the relationship between toy maker Albert J. Butterworth and his family over the course of many years. I don’t want to spoil much here but it’s a story that delves deeper than you might think at first. It’s about love, loss and the art of toy making. Both during and after certain puzzles Albert, his wife Helen, and their daughter Rose will appear as memories and re-enact heartfelt scenes from their life. One of my favorite moments is when you discover that the music from the beginning of the game comes from Helen. I thought this was a wonderful touch that really brings the other elements of Tin Hearts together with the narrative.

What Goes Around…

Besides this little musical moment Rogue Sun really does a wonderful job bringing the story full circle and ending it all with a neat little bow. All the questions I had while playing through the first act are answered by the end of Act 4. It will take approximately 5 to 10 hours to complete, depending on how difficult or time consuming you find each level. The narrative is definitely worth sticking around for and while I really enjoyed discovering how to complete the puzzles as they increased in complexity, I also got lost in the story.

The premise of the puzzles is straightforward: maneuver the tiny tin soldiers from their box to a little red door. The prologue and first couple of levels of Act 1 introduce you both to the characters and the controls. You begin with blocks that have four specific peg shapes. These blocks can be shifted to ensure the soldiers are going in the right direction but they can only be placed where these pegs exist. As you progress you’ll be able to use blocks which can be placed anywhere. You’ll also learn other abilities.

These abilities start off simple, like being able to control toy trains. Like the levels themselves the abilities become more complex and soon you’re able to set off toy cannons, master hot air balloon baskets and manipulate time. Being able to freeze or rewind time helps if you’ve made a dire mistake and it allows more time to strategize. While time is frozen you’ll also be able to see the soldier’s path as well. This is a huge game changer. Well, that and when you’re finally able to move around freely as your very own tin soldier.

This is where the platforming part of Tin Hearts comes in. It adds a completely new element to the game. As you progress through the levels and the puzzles become more complicated, these abilities aren’t just helpful, they’re necessary. The environments expand from a single table to a whole room to an entire floor of the house. And with these expansions come different dangers and obstacles for the soldiers. The puzzles are built around these environments in a way that feels very organic. The levels become much less straightforward and require your very best strategy to complete them. The real achievement here is that the puzzles find the perfect sweet spot; being not too challenging nor too easy.

Some Darn Good Puzzles

Unfortunately the gameplay and controls are not without their issues. Though minor there are noticeable glitches that occur when placing blocks, specifically when they become stuck between objects. Additionally, much like in the preview build of the game there are still some awkward camera angles and movements. The DualSense controller seemed a bit more intuitive than the mouse and keyboard however, which certainly helped make these occur less frequently. There are also a few observable frame rate inconsistencies at specific levels. While these usually resolve themselves rather quickly it does break the immersion of the game a bit. Thankfully none of these are game breaking; hopefully they can be patched quickly.

Little pieces of the world meld together and lend themselves to the emotional story being told. While the story may not be at the forefront all the time, each level has direct connections to the larger story of the Butterworth’s. I appreciate this level of detail and while playing each puzzle these little items almost felt like a small discovery. The letters that are read aloud during important levels add an extra layer of emotion to the story and increase player immersion. These, along with all of the other voice acting, are very well delivered. Experiencing these letters, and all of the moments between Albert and his family, felt very genuine and heartfelt.

The way the music is embedded in the story is captivating as well. It tells an important piece of this story and allows the narrative, and the environments to be felt on a deeper emotional level. The character animations, toy soldiers, and puzzles themselves are smooth, colorful and whimsical. The graphics are a mix between Victorian and Steampunk and I’m here for it. They’re also incredibly charming. While the outskirts of each of the puzzles aren’t as detailed as the main set pieces, they don’t feel too out of place. It might’ve been nice for the entire world to feel shiny and polished but it doesn’t feel elementary.

Overall Tin Hearts takes its players on an emotional journey through the charming world of the Butterworth household. This is done through well delivered voice acting, excellent musical pieces and a delightfully crafted game design. And all through the toy maker’s beautiful tiny tin soldiers. Though not without some minor issues Rogue Sun really nails the details in this game, making for a delightful and immersive experience from start to finish. If you’re looking to spend a few hours solving puzzles in a heartwarming world, Tin Hearts is the perfect adventure to jump into.
