Starfield Rumored to Break Xbox Exclusivity and Head to PS5

According to a report by XboxEra, Starfield is poised to make its way to the PS5. The game was once exclusive to Xbox but will reportedly come to the PlayStation world. The speculated expansion, ‘Shattered Space,’ is anticipated to precede this multi-platform release later this year.

Furthermore, other titles, Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves are also set to come on PS5. Hi-Fi Rush will be potentially arriving as early as Q1 of this year. An official statement from Microsoft addressing these developments is anticipated this month.

Adding weight to the speculation, XboxEra asserts that Microsoft has increased investments in PS5 development kits. This aligns with a notable change in the company’s strategic approach.

Starfield

Moreover, Jez Corden from WindowsCentral echoed these evolving rumours, expressing an expectation for Starfield to expand its availability to PlayStation. The speculations gained momentum in January 2024, fueled by widespread rumours that Xbox was contemplating releasing some of its games on various platforms, including Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves.

While an official confirmation is pending, the surge in rumours hints at a substantial shift in Xbox’s gaming strategy, signifying potential changes in exclusive arrangements. As the saying goes, where there’s smoke, there might be fire, and gamers await official word on this anticipated expansion of Starfield’s accessibility.

The news, initially brought to attention by the Twitter/X account @WhatLayoff, sheds light on the challenging employment landscape in the gaming industry.

The notice, mandatory for companies with over 100 employees, provides a 60-day warning period for planned layoffs. The affected personnel are spread across two locations on SEGA of America’s Irvine campus. One office will lose 12 employees and another seeing a reduction of 49 staff members.

A New Burnout Game Might Be in the Works at Stellar Entertainment

In a cryptic tweet, Stellar Entertainment has sparked speculation among fans about a potential new Burnout game. The tweet on X hints at insider information without explicitly revealing details. The Twitter message reads, “POV: You’re about to be rear-ended.”.

The reference to “rear-ending” and the mention of “take-downs” have fueled excitement from fans. This is because “Takedowns” is a crucial element in the Burnout series, referring to the act of destroying an opponent’s car. Xbox Sales See Massive Increase After Obtaining Activision Blizzard

Xbox sales have reached massive heights and show no signs of slowing down. Microsoft’s colossal $75 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard is proving to be a game-changer for the tech giant.

In its first earnings report since finalizing the acquisition in October 2023, Microsoft disclosed a substantial boost in Xbox content and services revenue, experiencing a staggering 61% increase. This surge encompasses earnings from Xbox Game Pass and the newly integrated Activision Blizzard portfolio. The overall gaming revenue reached an impressive $7.11 billion, marking a significant uptick from the previous year’s $5.26 billion.

Xbox

The net impact of the Activision Blizzard deal on Microsoft’s revenue was an impressive $2.08 billion, with additional costs related to the buyout totalling $930 million. Despite the operating loss of $440 million incurred during the quarter, the strategic move has contributed to gaming becoming Microsoft’s third-largest business category.

Even with a 3% rise in Xbox hardware revenue during the holiday quarter, Microsoft’s CFO, Amy Hood, acknowledged that the console market was “weaker than expected.” Nevertheless, the gaming division has firmly secured its place as a major revenue contributor, outperforming the Windows division’s revenue of $5.26 billion.

With gaming emerging as Microsoft’s third-highest revenue-generating category, boasting $7.11 billion, the company’s overall earnings for the last three months reached an impressive $62 billion, with a profit of $21.9 billion. As Microsoft becomes a trillion-dollar company, the impact of the Activision Blizzard acquisition on its financial standing is undeniable.

Spec Ops: The Line Is Randomly Delisted From Steam

In a surprising turn of events, 2K’s classic title, Spec Ops: The Line, has disappeared from the Steam store. The abrupt removal was noticed by vigilant Reddit user lurkingdanger22, who observed the game’s absence on Monday.

Curious gamers checking the Steam page are now met with a message stating, “Spec Ops: The Line is no longer available on the Steam store.” However, the reason behind this unexpected delisting remains unclear. This has prompted speculations within the gaming community on its delisting.

Furthermore, Reddit discussions have led towards the possibility of licensed music being the culprit. Spec Ops: The Line incorporates tracks from renowned artists like Jimi Hendrix, Mogwai, Deep Purple, Alice in Chains, and Björk. It’s conceivable that the expiration of licenses for these tracks prompted 2K to make the decision to delist the title. It’s unknown whether they will temporarily remove the game for license renewal or delist it permanently.

Moreover, Spec Ops: The Line achieved a Metacritic score of 77. The game’s sudden disappearance raises questions about licensing agreements and their impact on digital distribution platforms.

Additionally, Yager Development, the studio behind Spec Ops: The Line, saw investment from Chinese tech giant Tencent in 2020, with Tencent acquiring a majority stake in June 2021. Yager’s subsequent game, The Cycle: Frontier, met an untimely demise in June 2023 with server deactivation, rendering it unplayable.

In short, the current situation with Spec Ops: The Line leaves players and the gaming community wondering about the studio’s future projects. As gamers await clarity on the game’s removal, the mystery surrounding Spec Ops: The Line deepens.

Suicide Squad’s Early Access Comes to a Halt After Players Experience Auto-Completion Bug Upon Launch

Rocksteady, the developer behind Suicide Squad, faced a setback when an unforeseen bug disrupted the game’s early access release. Players, eager to delve into the action-packed world, encountered a glitch that automatically marked the game as completed upon logging in for the first time.

The glitch surfaced during the early access period granted to Deluxe Edition purchasers, offering a 72-hour head start before the official release on February 2. New Zealand, the first territory to initiate the early access, became the stage for this unexpected development.

Within an hour of the game’s launch, Rocksteady decided to take swift action by shutting down the servers. The studio communicated the temporary downtime to players, stating that it needed to investigate and address the auto-completion bug. The maintenance process, anticipated to last several hours, left players awaiting a resolution.

Rocksteady released a statement addressing the issue, saying, “We’re aware that a number of players are currently experiencing an issue whereby upon logging into the game for the first time, they have full story completion. To resolve this issue, we will be performing maintenance on the game servers.”

Despite multiple delays in the game’s development, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is scheduled for release on February 2, 2024, across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. The unforeseen bug and subsequent server downtime added a layer of frustration to the highly anticipated early access period.

Gameplay Footage of Cancelled Call of Duty Game Has Surfaced

Gameplay of a cancelled Call of Duty game, codenamed NX1, has leaked online. Shared by the Twitter account @mangafigurines, the leaked gameplay, reportedly titled Call of Duty: Future Warfare, showcases a lunar mission set in low-gravity conditions. Check it out here.

Brian Bright, the former multiplayer lead at Neversoft, authenticated the footage, detailing NX1’s origins. Neversoft, previously known for Guitar Hero, transitioned to crafting a futuristic Call of Duty. This transition followed the departure of Infinity Ward’s co-founders in 2010. The move aimed to fill the void left by Ghosts, which Neversoft envisioned as a worthy successor.

Despite completing several campaign missions and multiplayer work, NX1 faced an unfortunate demise before its full realization. Neversoft had introduced innovative features, such as an Escort mode involving a UGV with a trophy system.

An early map list revealed intriguing titles like Bin Laden’s Compound, Apartment, and Genk. The footage of said maps offered a glimpse into the alternate path Call of Duty might have taken.

The leaked footage hints at a potential divergence in Call of Duty’s trajectory during the last generation, where Neversoft’s vision could have altered the landscape. However, with Ghosts spearheading a futuristic phase, the franchise eventually found stability with the success of the Modern Warfare soft reboot. Neversoft, later absorbed by Infinity Ward, became a chapter in gaming history alongside the unrealized NX1 project.

The second enhancement introduces a “new experience” in specific sections of the Xbox Guide. Initially available to Alpha Skip-Ahead users through the Xbox Preview program, the broader user base will see this update in due course.

Blizzard’s Cancelled Survival Game: New Details Emerge Amid Layoffs

Insights into Blizzard’s cancelled survival game, codenamed Odyssey, have surfaced. The details come just a day after Microsoft laid off 1,900 employees from their game division which had developers working on ‘Odyssey’.

According to Bloomberg, after six years of development, Blizzard’s ambitious project was inspired by titles like Minecraft and Rust. The game, set in a new universe, was intended to offer vast maps accommodating 100 players before its demise.

However, technical challenges with the game engine initially prototyped on Epic’s Unreal Engine, led to its cancellation. Despite efforts to transition to Synapse, Blizzard’s internal engine, the project faced setbacks, ultimately rendering it unviable.

The cancellation, disclosed to staff during Microsoft’s announcement of 1,900 layoffs across Xbox, Bethesda, and Activision Blizzard, leftover 100 team members without roles.

Blizzard's Cancelled Survival Game

As Blizzard’s president, Mike Ybarra, and chief design officer, Allen Adham, bid farewell to the studio, the fate of Odyssey underscores broader organizational shifts.

Microsoft’s game content and studios president, Matt Booty, hinted at reallocating resources to promising new projects within Blizzard. Yet, the cancellation marks a setback for Blizzard’s gaming ambitions.

While Odyssey aimed for innovation in the survival genre, its cancellation highlights the challenges of game development and engine compatibility.

As Blizzard navigates this setback, the gaming community awaits updates on future projects and the studio’s strategic direction.

Nintendo Switch 2 Allegedly Has an 8-Inch LCD Screen and Will Release This Year

Nintendo’s upcoming console, the rumoured Switch 2, is anticipated to feature a sizable 8-inch LCD screen, according to analyst Hiroshi Hayase. Expected to hit the market this year, the Switch 2 is projected to drive a significant increase in shipments for ‘amusement displays.’

Hayase, an analyst specializing in small and medium displays, relies on checks within the supply chain for annual shipment forecasts. The credibility of his claim is underscored by his expertise in the display market.

Microsoft Faces 1900 Layoffs From Its Video Game Division

In a significant move impacting gaming, Microsoft is set to lay off 1,900 jobs from its video game division. Xbox head Phil Spencer expressed the difficulty of this decision and assured support for affected employees through a memo sent to IGN.

Spencer’s memo emphasizes the commitment to aligning strategies and execution plans for a sustainable cost structure in collaboration with Activision Blizzard. This strategic realignment aims to foster growth opportunities while acknowledging areas of overlap.

The decision to reduce the gaming workforce by approximately 1,900 roles, about 9% of the total team, reflects the evolving landscape following Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2023. Layoffs, often a consequence of such acquisitions, are part of streamlining operations and minimizing redundancies.

Xbox

The memo outlines Microsoft’s dedication to providing severance benefits and support to the affected individuals. While specifics about the allocation of layoffs remain unclear, the company’s commitment to prioritizing growth opportunities signals a forward-looking approach.

Mike Ybarra, Blizzard’s president, is among those departing the company. Additionally, Blizzard’s announced survival game has been cancelled due to these workforce reductions.

The gaming industry has witnessed a wave of job cuts despite a prolific year of blockbuster releases in 2023. Microsoft’s move is reflective of the broader trend, as companies navigate organizational changes to adapt to evolving market dynamics.

Netflix Sees Surge in Game Downloads Following GTA Trilogy Addition

Netflix’s game downloads have experienced a significant boost, primarily because of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition in its library. Available on the App Store, Google Play, and Netflix’s mobile app since December 14, all three remasters are accessible to Netflix subscribers without additional charges.

The addition of these high-profile games has had a substantial impact on Netflix’s monthly game downloads. Appmagic data, as reported by Mobilegamer.biz, reveals a remarkable increase from around 10 million downloads in November 2023 to approximately 28 million in December 2023.

GTA San Andreas emerges as the most popular among the trilogy, boasting 11.6 million downloads to date through Netflix. GTA Vice City follows with 4.1 million downloads, and GTA III contributes around 2.4 million, resulting in a collective 18.1 million downloads for the entire trilogy.

However, the success of Netflix’s gaming platform isn’t solely attributed to the GTA trilogy. Other popular downloads include Annapurna’s Storyteller (9.4 million), Too Hot to Handle (8.4 million), and SpongeBob Squarepants: Get Cooking (8.3 million).

Netflix introduced its library of mobile games in late 2021, accessible through the Android and iOS versions of its app. The recent surge in downloads reflects a growing interest in gaming content among Netflix subscribers, reinforcing the platform’s commitment to diversifying its entertainment offerings.

Director for Dragon’s Dogma 2 Wants Players to In-Game Travel Instead of Fast Travel

Hideaki Itsuno, director of Dragon’s Dogma 2, advocates engaging gameplay, opposing the use of fast travel. In an IGN interview, Itsuno suggested that players resorting to fast travel may indicate a lack of enjoyment in the game itself.

Itsuno emphasized the responsibility of developers to make regular travel enticing, urging them to integrate discovery, varied enemy encounters, and unpredictable situations. While Dragon’s Dogma 2 will offer two fast travel options, they come with limitations to discourage excessive reliance.

Players can teleport using rare Ferrystone items to Port Crystals placed strategically in the game world. Alternatively, Oxcarts provide fast travel along specific routes but are susceptible to enemy ambushes.

Dragon's Dogma 2

Itsuno painted a scenario where players might face goblin blockades, forcing them off an oxcart to join combat. Suddenly, a Griffin swoops in, demolishing the cart and compelling players to finish their journey on foot. This approach aims to create dynamic and unpredictable experiences during travel, ensuring players find the journey as engaging as the destination.

In a world where players might not have patience, a fast travel feature has been crucial in most games. However, enjoying a game’s environment and travelling through the hard-worked landscape can be enjoyable.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 is slated for release on March 22, available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

CD Projekt Hints at a Potential Multiplayer Mode in the Next Cyberpunk 2077 Game

CD Projekt is thinking about integrating multiplayer into the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, codenamed Orion. With Orion in the conceptual phase, CD Projekt’s joint CEO, Adam Badowski, revealed plans to increase the team to 80 by year-end. Co-CEO Michal Nowakowski hinted at the possibility of multiplayer but kept details under wraps.

The cancellation of Cyberpunk 2077’s multiplayer mode post-launch prompted a focus shift towards project recovery. The potential addition of multiplayer to Cyberpunk 2 raises speculation about a sci-fi equivalent to GTA Online.

While Cyberpunk 2 details remain scarce, narrative director Philipp Weber suggested expanding branching storylines based on player-chosen life paths like Street Kid, Corpo, and Nomad in Cyberpunk 2077. Key decisions, such as the perspective (first or third-person), are pending. With the final update for Cyberpunk 2077 completed, attention pivots to the sequel at CD Projekt Red.

Simultaneously, CD Projekt progresses with the next Witcher game, codenamed Polaris. Badowski aims for a team of 400 by mid-2024, with industry analysts predicting a 2026 or 2027 launch. Addressing AI utilization during development, Nowakowski emphasizes its supportive role, intending to enhance processes rather than replace human input.

CD Projekt affirms a transformative lesson from Cyberpunk’s rocky launch, claiming improved production processes to prevent a recurrence. Badowski asserts a commitment to avoiding future premieres akin to Cyberpunk 2077’s tumultuous release.
